'Stunning, Strange, & Surprising Facts' that appears on the cover of this book (kind of as a subtitle) should make it abundantly clear what this book is about. It is a book for the CURIOUS ? for folks that are inquisitive, those that like intrigue. 'Believe It or Not' was an alternate title considered for this book (but that phrase, alas, is now fraught with 'complications'). But I am sure that if you have got this far … you already have a very good feel as to what this sets out to OFFER YOU.This book is chock full of amazing (even arresting & scintillating) facts about Acadia for your entertainment, regalement and enchantment. There are over 200 FACTS (-- probably even 250). At the same time, this book will also enhance your appreciation and knowledge of Acadia. Now, when driving along the fabled 'Ocean Drive' you will know that the granite blocks that border the road have quite the amusing name. You will know that while every sunrise seen from atop Cadillac Mountain is special, you cannot experience 'first sunrise over mainland U.S.' from Acadia during the summer. It is also not the case, contrary to all you may have heard or hear, that Acadia was the first National Park east of the Mississippi. 2016 was also not the centenary of the Park! Plus 'Cadillac' is a fake title. Also, what is deemed Maine's 'First Lake' is in Acadia. Plus, now you will notice that the cute, three-arched bridge over 'Otter Creek' is both curved and banked ? not because it needs to be, but, instead, just for added aesthetics. All of that is but a start. There is a lot (a lot) more in the book ? over 200+ Incredible Facts.Check it out using the 'Preview' (i.e., 'Look Inside') feature. That will show you the fun that beckons. With this book you can enjoy and explore Acadia from a comfy seat, before, during, or after a visit. A warning, however. This book could make you a repeat visitor (like the author who visits at least twice, each year, and has done so for well over a decade). The back cover of this book talks about how Acadia's magic is due to synergy, and how this book adds to that to enhance the joy of your 'Acadian Experience'.The Preface, on the other hand, asks you to imagine Acadia as a yummy apple pie, with this book as the rich, premium topping that makes it into an irresistible ? la Mode. Cut to the chase this book is all about adding fun, excitement, and context to your Acadian Adventure. Enjoy.[A preliminary version of this book was briefly published in August 2025 under the title 'Acadia National Park ? Actually?' This is an updated version with more images and revised text.]

Excerpt: "Judy Lurie sat cross-legged on the floor of her room surveying the results of her labor. The room was a mess, even by her easy standards. But the box containing her last summer's meager wardrobe had been thoroughly gone over and everything that could be salvaged was in piles ready for the family trunk. The empty battered suitcase and the books, she decided, could wait, since it was still five days before she and her parents, Minna and John Lurie, were to leave for the summer holiday. "So you're going to Aspen!" a familiar voice ejaculated. "How wonderful for you and John!""

Excerpt: "It seems customary in a book of travel to make frequent allusions to other voyagers who have journeyed over the same ground, or at least the same district, and to make constant references to them, and give copious quotations from their works. Of course we ought to have gone to the British Museum before starting on our travel, and there read up all books which in the least bore upon the country which we were going to visit. We omitted to do this, firstly, because we preferred to observe things for ourselves, from our own individual standpoint, unprejudiced by the way in which other people had observed them; and, secondly, from the far more potent reason that we made our actual start in a great hurry, and had little enough time for any preparations whatever. However, on our return to England we thought well to check the information we had garnered. So we duly provided ourselves with readers' tickets for that institution, and went to the British Museum Library, and got down every book which seemed in any way to bear upon the country we had wandered over, regardless of the tongue in which it was written. It was a surprise to us to learn (and may we add that the surprise was not without its pleasant savour?) that of all the volumes in that collection not one covered the route which we took during summer through Arctic Lapland. Many had gone near it, from a gentleman of bygone date who wrote in Latin, to Mr. Paul du Chaillu, who chats about the larger part of the Scandinavian Peninsula. But we seemed to have stumbled across the one bit of Europe which has not been pilloried on paper at one time or another, and so we here venture to take up a couple of note-books which were originally made for personal gratification, and amplify them into a volume of letterpress and sketches which may haply interest others. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Country Driving A Chinese Road Trip【電子書籍】[ Peter Hessler ]

From the New York Times ?bestselling author of Oracle Bones , a look at the human-side of China's economic revolution via a seven,zero-mile road tripーAn Economist Best Book of the Year * A New York Times Notable Book of the Year.

"Hessler, a modern Marco Polo crossing China in a rented Jeep Cherokee, has witnessed signs and wonders worthy of a Coen brothers film. . . . Every so often, I read a book that upends my perceptions about a place. This is one of them." ー Bloomberg News

In the summer of 2001, Peter Hessler, the longtime Beijing correspondent for The New Yorker, acquired his Chinese driver's license. For the next seven years, he traveled the country, tracking how the automobile and improved roads were transforming China. Hessler writes movingly of the average peopleーfarmers, migrant workers, entrepreneursーwho have reshaped the nation during one of the most critical periods in its modern history.

Country Driving begins with Hessler's seven,zero-mile trip across northern China, following the Great Wall, from the East China Sea to the Tibetan plateau. He investigates a historically important rural region being abandoned, as young people migrate to jobs in the southeast. Next Hessler spends six years in Sancha, a small farming village in the mountains north of Beijing, which changes dramatically after the local road is paved and the capital's auto boom brings new tourism. Finally, he turns his attention to urban China, researching development over a period of more than two years in Lishui, a small southeastern city where officials hope that a new government-built expressway will transform a farm region into a major industrial center.

Peter Hessler, whom The Wall Street Journal calls "one of the Western world's most thoughtful writers on modern China," deftly illuminates the vast, shifting landscape of a traditionally rural nation that, having once built walls against foreigners, is now building roads and factory towns that look to the outside world.

"Hessler's genius has always been in his wry commentary and ability to transcribe the rhythms of his environment onto the page. . . . From this cast of thousands emerges a picture of great hopes tinged with sadness at what is being cast aside without second thought." ー The Wall Street Journal

"A fascinating road trip through a land in transition. . . . Hessler's description of China's new drivers is hilarious. . . . Country Driving tells us as much about contemporary China even when Hessler is not on the road." ー The Christian Science Monitor

In the summer of 1996, award-winning journalist Fen Montaigne embarked on a hundred-day, seven-thousand-mile journey across Russia. Traveling with his fly rod, he began his trek in northwestern Russia on the Solovetsky Islands, a remote archipelago that was the birthplace of Stalin's gulag. He ended half a world away as he fished for steelhead trout on the Kamchatka Peninsula, on the shores of the Pacific.
His tales of visiting these far-flung rivers are memorable, and at heart, Reeling in Russia is far more than a story of an angling journey. It is a humorous and moving account of his adventures in the madhouse that is Russia today, and a striking portrait that highlights the humanity and tribulations of its people.
In the end, the reader is left with the memory of haunted northern landscapes, of vivid sunsets over distant rivers, of the crumbling remains of pre-Revolutionary estates, and a cast of dogged Russians struggling to build a life amid the rubble of the Communist regime.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】In the Watershed A Journey Down the Maumee River【電子書籍】[ Ryan Schnurr ]

"An engaging narrative . . . braiding together [Schnurr's] personal observations with history, science, and folklore." ーScott Russell Sanders, author, Earth Works: Selected Essays and A Conservationist Manifesto

For several years, Ryan Schnurr watched media coverage of Lake Erie algae blooms with a growing sense of unease. An Indiana native, he wanted to learn more about role of the Maumee River in the lake's environmental woes: the Maumee is Lake Erie's largest tributary and the center of the largest watershed in the region, spanning more than 6,600 square miles of land. So in the summer of 2016, Schnurr walked and canoed the length of the river from its headwaters in Fort Wayne, Indiana to its mouth in Toledo, Ohio. In The Watershed: A Journey Down the Maumee River is the story of that voyage. As he walks the banks, Schnurr tells us the history of the river, from its formation by glaciers, function in Native American and American history, uses by industry, and role in current economic and environmental issues. Part cultural history, part nature writing, and part narrative, In the Watershed is a lyrical work of non-fiction with a timely and important warning at the core. "What is happening in Lake Erie," Schnurr tells us, "is a disaster by nearly any measureーecologically, economically, socially, culturally."

"The Maumee River [is] a rich, complex, and fragile place, and Schnurr is a superb guide through it." ーMark Athitakis, author, The New Midwest: A Guide to Contemporary Fiction of the Great Lakes, Great Plains, and Rust Belt

"Delightful." ーLuis Alberto Urrea, author, The Devil's Highway and Into the Beautiful North

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Gadfly in Russia A Story of Travel, History, People, and Places【電子書籍】[ Alan Sillitoe ]

This memoir and literary travelogue from one of the UK's most esteemed novelists offers rare insight into Cold War?era Russia.

In 1967, seeking an escape from his writing life, bestselling British novelist Alan Sillitoe embarks on a road trip from England to Russia via Harwich and Finland in his sturdy Peugeot. During his teens, the author had a cartographic fascination with the Battle of Stalingrad, and decades later he is still armed with intricate maps of the country based on British military intelligence, including one of the road from Leningrad to Moscow to Kiev, which he drew himself. Also in tow are a prismatic compass, binoculars, and a shortwave radio receiver. However, despite being so well prepared, Sillitoe embarks with naivet? about the political precariousness of an Englishman in the eyes of the Soviet regime.

After passing through the endless days of a Scandinavian summer and a prolonged stop at a border control checkpointーwith his maps hidden in a secret compartment of the carーSillitoe arrives in Leningrad. There, he meets George Andjaparidze, a worldly and candid English student who has been assigned by the Writers' Union to serve as the author's guide and keep him out of trouble. Though Sillitoe would rather continue his journey solo, Andjaparidze grows on him, and they begin what will become a lasting friendship.

As soon as the duo leaves Leningrad, adventures and misadventures ensue. En route to Moscow, Sillitoe and Andjaparidze end up racing a pack of middle-age men in German sports cars partaking in a Berlin-to-Moscow rally. Sillitoe and Andjaparidze's time in the capital is equally fast-paced, consisting of late nights fueled by vodka, impounded rubles, caviar breakfasts, erudite parties, and a pat on the back from a traffic cop for writing about the working class. A winding drive across western Russia and into Yugoslavia follows, replete with rebellious literature students, a speech on freedom, a visit to Tolstoy's estate, accusations of espionage, and a near-fatal run-in with a brigade of Red Army tanks.

At last the writer and guide reach their destination: Kursk, that fateful place where a Soviet victory in 1943 turned back the Nazi tide. But the story continues long after the road trip ends. Back in England, Andjaparidze visits Sillitoe and the two are caught up in a controversy surrounding the defection of the Soviet writer Anatoly Kuznetsov.

Written from the perspective of another trip to Russia forty years later (Sillitoe was invited in 2005 by the British Council to return to Moscow), this travelogue provides a rare and intimate look at the country's history, a compassionate understanding of its troubled ideology, and a frank portrayal of its undeniable lure.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The British Transport Commission Group Former Thomas Tilling Companies in the 1960s【電子書籍】[ Jim Blake ]

This fascinating and informative book looks at the Tilling Group of bus companies during the 1960s. These operated approximately half of the inter-urban and rural bus services in England and Wales, and were nationalized by Clement Attlee's Labour Government in 1948 under the control of the British Transport Commission. Ownership passed to the Transport Holding Company Ltd in 1963, though the fleets remained under Tilling Group control.During the period covered by this book, the operators within the group had very standardized fleets, with the vast majority of their buses and coaches having Bristol chassis and Eastern Coachworks (ECW) bodywork. This was a result of these manufacturers also having been nationalized and controlled by the BTC and THC.However, some Tilling Group operators still had earlier vehicles with, for instance, AEC or Leyland chassis, which were acquired prior to the requirement for them to buy only Bristol products, whilst some also had coaches with Bedford or Ford Thames chassis built in the 1950s and 1960s.Unlike the BET fleets throughout England and Wales, most Tilling fleets also had highly standardized liveries, either of red with cream relief, or green with cream relief for their stage carriage buses, or the reverse of this for their coaches. There were some exceptions, though. The most obvious ones were Midland General and Notts & Derby with an attractive dark blue and cream, as well as the Royal Blue coaches of Southern and Western National, and the maroon and cream coaches of Thames Valley subsidiary South Midland. All Tilling Group companies became part of the National Bus Company in early 1969, and before long their traditional liveries became just a memory when the NBC imposed standard red or green liveries.Throughout most of the 1960s, Jim Blake travelled to these operators and photographed their vehicles, and spent many summer Saturdays at London's Victoria Coach Station, where their service buses as well as express coaches could be seen. He was fortunate to capture much of this changing transport scene on film, and presents some of these photographs in this volume. Many have never been published before.

German Baron Karl von Drais first introduced the two-wheeled tandem human-powered wooden-framed vehicle to the world, in the summer of 1817, its rider gamely steering with the front wheel while pushing along with his feet. After that history is rather vague about the bicycle. We know that the mechanically powered velocipede took off in the 1860s, soon followed by the Penny Farthing, but it wasn't until the late nineteenth century that the golden age of bicycles took off as people realised the freedoms afforded by self-powered travel, and touring and racing became popular pastimes. Today of course cycling is a global phenomenon both in professional sporting and non-professional spheres.

It is almost 100 years since the first tram was preserved in Britain, in the century since then a great variety of trams have been saved from tramway systems small and large. Some trams were purchased directly out of service and others were acquired after many years alternative usage, some being summer houses or homes, while others were used on farms or allotments where they served as sheds and out buildings, before being lovingly restored over many years. The story of tram preservation is not wholly positive, in the early days many trams suffered from being stored in the open at unsafe sites, where the historic vehicles were often subjected to acts of vandalism and suffered badly from the weather. This changed to a large extent in 1959, with the acquisition of the site of the future National Tramway Museum at Crich in Derbyshire,, where a comprehensive collection of trams from all over Britain and also foreign tram networks has been assembled, to secure a collection of tramcars for future generations. There is also today fine collections of trams in other museums in Britain and Ireland, which cover much of the rich history of this once common form of public transport. This book looks at almost 200 of these trams when they were in service, through historic photographs, prior to their withdrawal and eventual preservation.

This is not AI-generated content. The contents were written and verified by subject matter experts from Aviation Supplies & Academics, an 85-year-old aviation company. Look for the ASA wings to ensure you are purchasing a reliable publication.

This is the eBook (ePub) edition of this title.

In the northern latitudes, many pilots fly a tailwheel in the summer and then put the same airplane on skis in the winter… an initial tailwheel checkout is often followed up with a ski checkout. Author Burke Mees keeps to that sequence of events in this book, which covers the basics for both checkouts along with valuable commentary on the finer points.

This book is meant to be useful not only to the beginner first making this transition, but also to provide relevant observations to the pilot or instructor already flying these kinds of airplanes. The author's clear explanations have proven effective with students and are distilled from two decades of experience in flying and flight instructing in tailwheel airplanes and skiplanes.

In addition to an orderly presentation of all the basic topics required to develop tailwheel/ski competence, Mees also covers advanced topics such as flying multi-engine tailwheel airplanes and ski-flying on glaciers. But rather than simply explain the list of topics, this book anticipates and preemptively addresses questions and difficulties experienced by the average student. Here readers will find insights about the learning process
that will help prepare them for flight training in these airplanes.

*Important note from the publisher:

While AI-generated content can be helpful to identify resources for ongoing study, it is not a reliable resource for learning critical, safety-dependent topics such as aviation. AI content is sterile, often lacks important context, and is at risk of errors. ASA publishes only human-generated content to ensure it is accurate, reliable, comprehensive, and presented in contextーso you can become a safe and effective aviator.*

Having spent her summers in Tuscany for the past several years, Frances Mayes relished the opportunity to experience the pleasures of primavera, an Italian spring. A sabbatical from teaching in San Francisco allowed her to return to Cortona--and her beloved house, Bramasole--just as the first green appeared on the rocky hillsides. Bella Tuscany, a companion volume to Under the Tuscan Sun, is her passionate and lyrical account of her continuing love affair with Italy. Now truly at home there, Mayes writes of her deepening connection to the land, her flourishing friendships with local people, the joys of art, food, and wine, and the rewards and occasional heartbreaks of her villa's ongoing restoration. It is also a memoir of a season of change, and of renewed possibility. As spring becomes summer she revives Bramasole's lush gardens, meets the challenges of learning a new language, tours regions from Sicily to the Veneto, and faces transitions in her family life. Filled with recipes from her Tuscan kitchen and written in the sensuous and evocative prose that has become her hallmark, Bella Tuscany is a celebration of the sweet life in Italy.

Traveling with his fly rod, he began his trek in northwestern Russia on the Solovetsky Islands, a remote archipelago that was the birthplace of Stalin's gulag. He ended his travels half a world away as he fished for steelhead trout on the Kamchatka Peninsula, on the shores of the Pacific. In between he journeyed alone through the eternal Russia of log cabin villages and endless taiga, completing a trip few other Westerners have made. A former Moscow correspondent who speaks Russian, Montaigne trekked to some of the world's most beautiful rivers in pursuit of exotic game fish. Much of the time, his efforts were thwarted by poachers or his own incompetence. But his tales of visiting these far-flung rivers are memorable, and at heart Reeling in Russia is far more than a story of an angling journey. It is a humorous and moving account of his adventures in the madhouse that is Russia today, and a striking portrait that highlights the humanity and tribulations of its people.
