Having begun his cooking career in some of New York's and San Francisco's best restaurants, David Shalleck undertakes a European culinary adventure, a quest to discover what it really means to be a chef through a series of demanding internships in Provence and throughout Italy. After four years, as he debates whether it is finally time to return stateside and pursue something more permanent, he stumbles upon a rare opportunity: to become the chef on board Serenity, the classic sailing yacht owned by one of Italy's most prominent couples. They present Shalleck with the ultimate challenge: to prepare all the meals for them and their guests for the summer, with no repeats, comprised exclusively of local ingredients that reflect the flavors of each port, presented flawlessly to the couple's uncompromising taste--all from the confines of the yacht's small galley while at sea. Shalleck invites readers to experience both place and food on Serenity's five-month journey. He prepares the simple classics of Provençal cooking in the French Riviera, forages for delicate frutti di mare in Liguria to make crudo, finds the freshest fish along the Tuscan coast for cacciucco, embraces the season of sun-drenched tomatoes for acqua pazza in the Amalfi Coast, and crosses the Bay of Naples to serve decadent dark chocolate-almond cake at the Isle of Capri. Shalleck captures the distinctive sights, sounds, and unique character of each port, the work hard/play hard life of being a crew member, and the challenges of producing world-class cuisine for the stylish and demanding owners and their guests. An intimate view of the most exclusive of worlds, Mediterranean Summer offers readers a new perspective on breathtaking places, a memorable portrait of old world elegance and life at sea, as well recipes and tips to re-create the delectable food.

He and his men had held the besieged city for four long months, but now it was clear that only surrender would prevent slaughter and destruction at the hands of a huge French army.Against all odds, Garibaldi was determined to turn defeat into moral victory. On the evening of July 2, riding alongside his pregnant wife, Anita, he led 4,000 hastily assembled men to continue the struggle for national independence elsewhere. Hounded by both French and Austrian armies, the garibaldini marched hundreds of miles across the Appenines, Italy's mountainous spine, and after two months of skirmishes and adventures arrived in Ravenna with just 250 survivors.Best-selling author Tim Parks, together with his partner Eleonora, set out in the blazing summer of 2019 to follow Garibaldi and Anita's arduous journey through the heart of Italy. In The Hero's Way he delivers a superb travelogue that captures Garibaldi's determination, creativity, reckless courage, and profound belief. And he provides a fascinating portrait of Italy then and now, filled with unforgettable observations of Italian life and landscape, politics, and people.

Acadia National Park for Inquiring Minds【電子書籍】[ Anura Guruge ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Acadia National Park for Inquiring Minds【電子書籍】[ Anura Guruge ]

'Stunning, Strange, & Surprising Facts' that appears on the cover of this book (kind of as a subtitle) should make it abundantly clear what this book is about. It is a book for the CURIOUS ? for folks that are inquisitive, those that like intrigue. 'Believe It or Not' was an alternate title considered for this book (but that phrase, alas, is now fraught with 'complications'). But I am sure that if you have got this far … you already have a very good feel as to what this sets out to OFFER YOU.This book is chock full of amazing (even arresting & scintillating) facts about Acadia for your entertainment, regalement and enchantment. There are over 200 FACTS (-- probably even 250). At the same time, this book will also enhance your appreciation and knowledge of Acadia. Now, when driving along the fabled 'Ocean Drive' you will know that the granite blocks that border the road have quite the amusing name. You will know that while every sunrise seen from atop Cadillac Mountain is special, you cannot experience 'first sunrise over mainland U.S.' from Acadia during the summer. It is also not the case, contrary to all you may have heard or hear, that Acadia was the first National Park east of the Mississippi. 2016 was also not the centenary of the Park! Plus 'Cadillac' is a fake title. Also, what is deemed Maine's 'First Lake' is in Acadia. Plus, now you will notice that the cute, three-arched bridge over 'Otter Creek' is both curved and banked ? not because it needs to be, but, instead, just for added aesthetics. All of that is but a start. There is a lot (a lot) more in the book ? over 200+ Incredible Facts.Check it out using the 'Preview' (i.e., 'Look Inside') feature. That will show you the fun that beckons. With this book you can enjoy and explore Acadia from a comfy seat, before, during, or after a visit. A warning, however. This book could make you a repeat visitor (like the author who visits at least twice, each year, and has done so for well over a decade). The back cover of this book talks about how Acadia's magic is due to synergy, and how this book adds to that to enhance the joy of your 'Acadian Experience'.The Preface, on the other hand, asks you to imagine Acadia as a yummy apple pie, with this book as the rich, premium topping that makes it into an irresistible ? la Mode. Cut to the chase this book is all about adding fun, excitement, and context to your Acadian Adventure. Enjoy.[A preliminary version of this book was briefly published in August 2025 under the title 'Acadia National Park ? Actually?' This is an updated version with more images and revised text.]
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Switzerland Travel Guide【電子書籍】[ The Non Fiction Author ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Switzerland Travel Guide【電子書籍】[ The Non Fiction Author ]

Melted chocolate drizzled over fresh, crusty bread. Snow glinting on the treetops as the train whisks you ever higher into the mountains. The chime as the clock strikes noon and it’s time for yet another delectable lunch of the finest French cuisine. And knowing that in a few hours you will be tucking into Italian-inspired fare before heading out for drinks in the old town.

The mountainous scenery in Switzerland is characterized by its variety and depth. The hills curve around crystal blue lakes in summer, while in winter a coating of snow covers the rolling landscape. The fields stay fresh and green while the forests thrive with regular precipitation. Luckily it is not often subject to fog, clouds, or pollution, unlike other places in Europe. It can be terribly disappointing to miss a stunning sunset due to inclement weather. Here in Switzerland you can climb up tall peaks or march to the top of a cathedral tower to see for miles around. Search online or look at a book and you will glimpse just a few of the striking scenes that are commonplace in the country.

Switzerland is well known as being home to a large portion of the Alps mountain range, which also runs through France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, and Austria. But there are more mountain ranges other than the Alps. The Jura Mountain range in the northwest is not far from the Swiss town Neuch?tel, and the border with France. The Matterhorn range in the south of the country lies right on the edge between Switzerland and Italy, serving as a natural borderline. Within the center of the country are the Jungfrau and Eiger mountains, which are full of charming resorts that cater to those on a relaxing holiday.

With all of these mountains Switzerland is famously idyllic as a skiing destination for both Europeans and Americans. Many dream of swishing down the white slopes during the day and drinking Swiss hot chocolate by a fire at night, roasting your toes over an open fire. There is winter climbing and mountaineering, snowshoeing and many other activities to keep you active in the cold, as well as plenty of luxurious, indoor treats to enjoy too when you need to defrost.

In spring and summer the ice melts and Switzerland blooms with color. The flowers are well tended in the city parks and the fields turn a spring green. The countryside holds terrific beauty and a great way to experience it is a simple walk through the hills. There is more daylight than in winter so you can get a later start on the day and still have plenty of time for walking along the lakeside promenade of Zurich before the sun goes down. In good weather the outdoor cafes fill up as people watchers stake out their seats for an afternoon of observing locals going about their day. A strong cup of coffee is the perfect pick-me-up after spending a few hours shopping for a wristwatch, and try the pastries drizzled with rich chocolate.

If cold weather is your nemesis, you can still see snow all year round. Switzerland has the longest glacier in Europe called the Aletsch Glacier, located near the Jungfrau peaks. Switzerland also has the biggest waterfall in Europe by volume of water, the Rhine Falls not far from Zurich. These remarkable sights are easily accessible with a tour group or on your own, so bring a camera and good walking shoes.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Amsterdam Travel Guide【電子書籍】[ The Non Fiction Author ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Amsterdam Travel Guide【電子書籍】[ The Non Fiction Author ]

Chances are, you've heard one or two things about Amsterdam already: seventeenth century buildings and readily available hash, the Van Gogh gallery and erotic museums, a laid back atmosphere and a liberal tolerance, eccentrics and slick business types; Amsterdam blends history and urban flair unlike any other city in Europe. It doesn't matter if you've been around the world twice, you're a first-time traveler, or you're somewhere in-between, Amsterdam offers something new at every gabled corner, and to suit all tastes.

The capital of the Netherlands is a lively juxtaposition of cobbled streets and pretty canals, with an easily accessible underbelly of fascinating quirks. Whether you're here for a weekend break or as part of a longer Europe trip, there are many superlatives to describe Amsterdam, and boring is never one of them. Explore concentric horseshoes of canals by bike ? navigating the compact warren of heritage buildings studded with offbeat shops and bars. Stop cycling to traverse the city's waterways, flanked by boats and barges, the perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon and to understand Amsterdam's seamless diversity. Museum-hop by foot; echoing the Dutch Eco-spirit whilst choosing a handful from hundreds of cultural centers and galleries to expand your knowledge.

Amsterdam, of course, has a striking reputation. Many people feel intimidated by the idea of visiting, and shouldn't feel bad about that ? however, this is a city filled with alternatives, both for those uninspired by the tolerant attitudes, and for those not sufficiently challenged by Rembrandt and the Rijksmuseum. Everything you've heard about Amsterdam is true, and it isn't true; some justified, some blown up. There are layers of understanding to this city which you can peel back and give you new insight visit after visit. Over the past couple of decades or so, Amsterdam has softened its edge. Though you can still find groups of blokes on the prowl in the Red Light District, along with backpackers and sixties throwback crowds here solely to get stoned, the small-city segmentation by its canals means you can just as easily find your way to cosmopolitan shopping districts, boutique bars, and peaceful parks within a city utterly brimming with culture.

For new travelers, Amsterdam is one of Western Europe's great gateway cities. This is a place which gives those in their late teens and early twenties, or those unsure or inexperienced in wandering the world, a taste of life beyond their own borders. Not only an early port of call for Europeans, Amsterdam is often the first long haul destination for many Americans and Australians, seeking a heady mixture of rich culture, eclectic beauty and vibrant parties after sundown. This city might be on the other side of the world, with a startlingly laissez-faire attitude, but it's also a home from home. Not only is it easy to find your way around, but Amsterdammers would describe their city as gezellig, their well-worn buzz word meaning a combination of 'cosy', 'warmly convivial', and 'lived-in'.

For the well-travelled, Amsterdam is ever-evolving and making constant headway in terms of counterculture and development ? leading the list of consistently visit-able European cities. Though many travelers return to Amsterdam to find new clubs, more up-market establishments and exciting regeneration projects, most return time and time again for what remains sacred to the city ? the cheery intimacy of Dutch cafes, the human and physical warmth at its open-air summer events, the swath of art moving through the city and the proximity of atmospheres to suit every mood: oases of calm found right next to bustling markets.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Cry of the Kiwi: A Family's New Zealand Adventure The Complete Series, Books 1-3【電子書籍】[ Magi Nams ]

"...a delicious taste of life in New Zealand." - Monica

Told with grace and style, alive with insight and intriguing facts, Cry of the Kiwi: A Family's New Zealand Adventure captures the joys and challenges, struggles and awakenings experienced by a Canadian family that hits the ground running in New Zealand and finds its feet in a land of volcanoes, giant trees, mammalian pests, and endangered flightless birds.

In 2000 Magi Nams was a harried home schooling mother who yearned for a big travel adventure, a glorious trip somewhere far away where she could walk beneath the canopies of unknown trees and identify exotic birds. And where she and her family could spend months exploring an intriguing foreign culture. Would the dream ever come true? She had one hope… her ecologist husband was a weasel expert, and New Zealand had a lot of weasels to get rid of.

Book 1, Once a Land of Birds: On New Zealand's spectacular South Island, Magi and her family scramble through tangled bush, hike over windswept hills, and dive head and heart into New Zealand life, history, and ecology. Travel and hiking adventures take them to verdant rainforests in the island's northwest, over ancient volcanoes on the east coast, and into the majestic mountain country of the Southern Alps. Throughout it all, Magi and her husband and two sons develop a growing understanding of and affection for New Zealand's maverick persona and its beleaguered, long-isolated native flora and fauna.

Book 2: This Dark Sheltering Forest: Amid downpours and summer heat, Magi and her family ride quads over muddy pitted tracks on North Island's Central Volcanic Plateau as they trap stoats, the subject of her husband's research. Long hours in the outdoors introduce her boys to the challenges of field research, and the entire family to the lush, cluttered beauty of a New Zealand rainforest. During time off she and her family hike over an active volcano, snorkel among electric-blue fishes, spot glow-worms in mysterious caverns, walk among New Zealand's rarest birds, gaze in awe at some of the largest trees in the world, and explore a gaudy geothermal wonderland. With a gift for observing and story-telling, the author evokes the majesty and mystery of New Zealand's volcanic North Island, the drama and tedium of six weeks of scientific research and travel, and the tensions and joys felt by two parents and two kids bonding more tightly far from home.

Book 3: Tang of the Tasman Sea: Back on South Island, Magi and her family battle home school tensions and adventure inertia before rebounding to backpack the Abel Tasman Coast Track, watch the Aurora Australis from a mountain top, hike to a brooding creek with a history of disaster, follow flashlights deep into caves, and climb over icy bedrock to a look-off in breathtaking glacier country. As their family travel adventure of a lifetime draws to a close, it becomes clear that New Zealand's heart lies as much in its people as in its majestic landscapes and intriguing flora and fauna. With awareness and a rich turn of phrase, the author portrays South Island's natural beauty and reveals how some landscapes her family explores during five final months in New Zealand are landscapes of the heart, and how some trails lead not up mountains but to new peaks within.

"An adventure of mind, body and spirit" - Tara

"Highly recommended." - Michelle

Buy Cry of the Kiwi: A Family's New Zealand Adventure series today and revel in a travel tale set in one of the most beautiful countries on earth!
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

RVing to the Land of the Midnight Sun【電子書籍】[ Jim Hendrickson ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】RVing to the Land of the Midnight Sun【電子書籍】[ Jim Hendrickson ]

This book describes my fifth trip to Alaska where, according to Jack London, once you visit that northern region of the world, it takes a firm hold of your spirit, and you want to return some day.

In the summer of 2014, I made a relatively comfortable road trip for six weeks in my 2008 Lexus SUV with which I pulled a 17-foot custom-made travel trailer that cost $30,000. It had a cozy bed, air conditioner, solar power, and a tiny "wet bath" in which I could almost accomplish my toilet business and take a shower at the same time.

I didn't have a great deal of RVing experience under my belt, but it didn't matter to me because I was willing to learn the ropes of RVing and enjoy (or suffer) any consequences along the road. I'm an adventurer by heart. I love to visit new places, meet new people, and experience new ways of living. I'm a free spirit willing to take chances just for the fun of it.

I spent over 200 hours preparing for this latest journey by reading many books and articles about traveling to the Arctic region. Because my trailer was almost new, it was in excellent condition; I simply washed it and loaded it with food, dishes, utensils, a small pot, a frying pan, clothing, toiletries, several other personal items, a laptop computer, and maps. I also bought an extra spare tire and rim for the RV.

On June 5, 2014 I left my home in Washington state for the Land of the Midnight Sun, where many exciting adventures awaited me just up the road. I hope you enjoy reading about
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Iceland Travel Guide【電子書籍】[ The Non Fiction Author ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Iceland Travel Guide【電子書籍】[ The Non Fiction Author ]

Iceland is a land of extremes with icebergs floating near hot springs, desolation and luscious beauty, vibrant colors painted on empty expanses without a living plant or animal in sight. You can party until the sheep come home one night then watch the northern lights dance over your head while you try to decide if you believe that it is the result of particles from the sun hitting Earth’s atmosphere, or whether it is aliens saying “hello”.

Despite its remote location Iceland still draws more than a million visitors every year, three times the population of the country. The magnetic power of Iceland to pull tourists from their homes to its shores is found deep below the surface where the raw planetary crust is slowly splitting apart along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the source of many mountains and earthquakes in Iceland. While there many geologically active volcanoes generally they are not continually spewing lava, though you could experience the explosive nature of the volatile earth during your visit if there has been a recent eruption, or you are lucky enough to be stranded in Iceland during one.

There are numerous other attractions not involving molten lava, from waterfalls to fjords and the Icelandic cities and towns. The capital, Reykjav?k, is on the southeastern coast of the country and is home to nearly a third of the population with an abundance of museums, bars, cafes and gift shops. Nearby to Reykjav?k you can go on a whale watching tour, second only to H?sav?k in northern Iceland. You can (and should) make a day trip to see the highlights of the Golden Circle including drifting ?ingvellir National Park, tremendous Gullfoss, and the explosive geysers. While Reykjav?k may seem like a small, quiet metropolis, it is in fact the largest city in the country. Other small villages are scattered around mainly on the coast but in some places you can drive for hours without seeing another car or person.

The biggest highlight of Iceland for most visitors lies beyond the city limits, so get out of the urban and into the rural wonder. Stunning national parks, immense glaciers, and vivid landscapes await those who explore into the interior and up into the highlands. The natural side of the country is a draw for most visitors who seek an escape from paved roads and honking cars. Though it is only accessible during the summer the central regions are home to impressive scenes and popular hiking routes, both day trips and multi-day excursions.

As you circuit the island you will see the coast and countryside change from sandy to cliff faces, rolling hills with snow perched on top and islands poking out of the white capped waves. If the sight of snow chills your blood you can stop in the natural hot springs to warm up, or take a swim in the local swimming pools which are often geothermally heated as well.

Though your options for exploration are limited in the winter months there is the increased likelihood that you could catch the spectacular Aurora Borealis giving the show of a lifetime. Winter is also a good time to tour one of Iceland’s glaciers, a major draw for tourists who enjoy strapping on crampons, grabbing an ice axe, and trekking up onto the frozen, barren expanse. Any time of year it is a good time to visit Iceland.

Culturally Iceland shares much of its history and roots with Scandinavian countries like Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Today there is a wealth of written material and the surviving records date from when Iceland was first inhabited in the tenth century.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Greece Travel Guide【電子書籍】[ The Non Fiction Author ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Greece Travel Guide【電子書籍】[ The Non Fiction Author ]

Sand between your toes as you eat a fresh salad of green olives piled on crimson tomatoes and crisp lettuce topped with olive oil and feta. In the afternoon you wander down the very streets that Socrates and Plato strolled while developing the cradle of democracy and the foundation for the western world we know today. After a few days exploring the ruins you catch a ferry to the islands where whitewashed churches with bright blue domes await, welcoming visitors to stay a while and relax on the beach. You will meet locals and tourists from around the world, all emitting the relaxed glow of spending the day in the sun. By the time you leave you will never look at a Greek salad the same way again.

Greece has a long, ancient history that dates back thousands of years. The early Greek civilizations faced scores of invaders and both were conquered and victorious. The influences of these other cultures is still present today in the architecture, cuisine, and customs all over the country. To check out neoclassical architecture go to Ermoupolis and Nafplion, or make your way to Grevena and Kozani to see some of the Ottoman-influenced buildings. At the same time there are plenty of foods and traditions that are authentically Greek in origin and have been preserved through the ages, so don’t miss out on all of the nationally vintaged wine, fresh produce, and tasty meats.

With its idyllic weather and the Mediterranean Sea as a stunning backdrop, Greece has been known as a vacation and holiday destination for centuries though the tourist industry has picked up in the past century and boomed in the last three decades. The hot summer and cloudless skies beckons young and old travelers to the beaches to sunbathe and surf, and to watch the sunset with a friend or at least with a drink. Then they migrate to the archeological ruins and many UNESCO World Heritage Sites to learn about the rise and fall of empires ,and how our predecessors lived their lives similarly yet differently from ours. In recent years there has been an influx of visitors who are following the booming nightlife in both Athens and on the islands where the party doesn’t stop until the sun shows up, so don’t forget your party hats at home.

Nature lovers are always impressed by the scenery in Greece with lush and green forests and rolling hills next to deep crystal waters, cut off by cliffs. To make your trip even more nature filled you can visit the breathtaking Pindos mountain range to see the Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest in the world. The Vikos-Aoos National park is full of forests and waterfalls where there are lakes lying next to the jagged mountains and the whole area is dotted with villages built out of stone.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
