This new, third edition of Bradt's Romania: Transylvania remains the only standalone English language guide to this legendary and enchanting region. Comprehensive chapter-per-county coverage is offered, including details to cater for the diverse range of travellers to the region, from city breaks to rural escapes, ski enthusiasts to charity volunteers. Thoroughly updated, this new edition reflects all the changes of the past few years, from improved transport infrastructure (in particular the regional airports at Cluj, Sibiu and T?rgu Mures) to the completion of new motorway routes, such as that between Sibiu and Deva. Also covered are a number of striking new accommodation options: for example the sustainable guesthouse in Valea Zalanului owned by HRH The Prince of Wales, and the mountaintop retreat of Raven's Nest in the Apuseni Mountains. More attractions have opened up, such as Baroque palaces formerly owned by Hungarian aristocrats, seized under the Communist regime and now being restored by the descendants of their original owners. And the region is developing its offer for new types of tourism, such as summer rock festivals, notably the Untold Festival at Cluj and Electric Castle Festival at Bontida.

Transylvania, literally the 'land beyond the forest', is a wild, wooded, intensely romantic region, filled with mountains, gorges and valleys, myths and legends, dragons, bears, wolves - and vampires. Bram Stoker called it 'one of the wildest and least-known parts of Europe' a description which remains true today. One of the most beautiful regions in central Europe and home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Transylvania preserves its cultural and artistic treasures in a unique landscape, bordered on three sides by the Carpathian Mountains. The hay meadows of the lower Carpathians form a man-made, high nature-value grassland ecosystem of extraordinary diversity, offering a beautiful display of wild flowers. The Carpathians are home too to lynx, wild boar, and one of Europe's largest populations of brown bear. Other natural phenomena include the Scarisoara ice cave in the Apuseni Mountains and the Sfanta Ana volcanic crater lake in Harghita.

Whatever your interests, with Bradt's Romania: Transylvania, you can discover all of the region's many and varied attractions.

Considered one of the patron saints of twentieth-century environmental activity, John Muir's appeal to modern readers is that he not only explored the American West but also fought for its preservation. My First Summer in the Sierra is Muir's account of his adventures and observations while working as a shepherd in the Yosemite Valley, which later became Yosemite National Park as a direct result of Muir's writings and activism. Great Western Castle Class 4-6-0 Locomotives The Final Years 1960?1965【電子書籍】[ David Maidment ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Great Western Castle Class 4-6-0 Locomotives The Final Years 1960?1965【電子書籍】[ David Maidment ]

The author's second volume about the Great Western's classic express locomotives covers their final six years in British Railways service. In 1960 the Castles, many now modernized with double chimneys and 4-row superheaters, were still in charge of most of the Western Region's expresses, but by the summer of 1963 their regular express work was limited to the London ? Worcester route. Their declining numbers in the last couple of years covered special summer and relief trains, parcels and freight work, deputizing for failed or unavailable diesels and a flurry of excursions and railtours where their prowess could still be demonstrated. The author worked and lived alongside them in these years and the book includes much of his own personal experience on the footplate, on their trains and on shed. The book recaps briefly their first 25 years and covers their history, operation and performance in their final years and is copiously illustrated including over 100 color photographs.

The British Transport Commission Group Former Thomas Tilling Companies in the 1960s【電子書籍】[ Jim Blake ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The British Transport Commission Group Former Thomas Tilling Companies in the 1960s【電子書籍】[ Jim Blake ]

This fascinating and informative book looks at the Tilling Group of bus companies during the 1960s. These operated approximately half of the inter-urban and rural bus services in England and Wales, and were nationalized by Clement Attlee's Labour Government in 1948 under the control of the British Transport Commission. Ownership passed to the Transport Holding Company Ltd in 1963, though the fleets remained under Tilling Group control.During the period covered by this book, the operators within the group had very standardized fleets, with the vast majority of their buses and coaches having Bristol chassis and Eastern Coachworks (ECW) bodywork. This was a result of these manufacturers also having been nationalized and controlled by the BTC and THC.However, some Tilling Group operators still had earlier vehicles with, for instance, AEC or Leyland chassis, which were acquired prior to the requirement for them to buy only Bristol products, whilst some also had coaches with Bedford or Ford Thames chassis built in the 1950s and 1960s.Unlike the BET fleets throughout England and Wales, most Tilling fleets also had highly standardized liveries, either of red with cream relief, or green with cream relief for their stage carriage buses, or the reverse of this for their coaches. There were some exceptions, though. The most obvious ones were Midland General and Notts & Derby with an attractive dark blue and cream, as well as the Royal Blue coaches of Southern and Western National, and the maroon and cream coaches of Thames Valley subsidiary South Midland. All Tilling Group companies became part of the National Bus Company in early 1969, and before long their traditional liveries became just a memory when the NBC imposed standard red or green liveries.Throughout most of the 1960s, Jim Blake travelled to these operators and photographed their vehicles, and spent many summer Saturdays at London's Victoria Coach Station, where their service buses as well as express coaches could be seen. He was fortunate to capture much of this changing transport scene on film, and presents some of these photographs in this volume. Many have never been published before.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】BMW Z3 Roadster All models (except M Roadster) 1995 to 2002【電子書籍】[ James Fishwick ]

This book releases one of the best-kept secrets of the sports car world - the BMW Z3, the latest generation of the traditional small sports car, with the advantages of being based on a tried and tested model range produced by a manufacturer of high quality cars with enviable service and spares support. Designed in Bavaria, styled in California, and built in South Carolina, the Z3 caused generations of motoring writers to dismiss it as a toy sports car, fit only for 'Estate agents, hairdressers and footballers wives,' but is it really so bad? As the Z3 becomes a modern classic, potential buyers have little information to help them sort out the best cars from the others, most Z3 books being a combination of history and data. This guide shows what to expect and what to look for, written against a background of prolonged ownership and Z3 knowledge. Containing a wealth of Z3 information, practical inspection and driving evaluation hints, this book will help potential buyers through the process of finding the car they want, whether it is to be a summer runner or a car to keep and cherish.

Excerpt: "Judy Lurie sat cross-legged on the floor of her room surveying the results of her labor. The room was a mess, even by her easy standards. But the box containing her last summer's meager wardrobe had been thoroughly gone over and everything that could be salvaged was in piles ready for the family trunk. The empty battered suitcase and the books, she decided, could wait, since it was still five days before she and her parents, Minna and John Lurie, were to leave for the summer holiday. Through Arctic Lapland【電子書籍】[ Charles John Cutcliffe Wright Hyne ]

Excerpt: "It seems customary in a book of travel to make frequent allusions to other voyagers who have journeyed over the same ground, or at least the same district, and to make constant references to them, and give copious quotations from their works. Of course we ought to have gone to the British Museum before starting on our travel, and there read up all books which in the least bore upon the country which we were going to visit. We omitted to do this, firstly, because we preferred to observe things for ourselves, from our own individual standpoint, unprejudiced by the way in which other people had observed them; and, secondly, from the far more potent reason that we made our actual start in a great hurry, and had little enough time for any preparations whatever. However, on our return to England we thought well to check the information we had garnered. So we duly provided ourselves with readers' tickets for that institution, and went to the British Museum Library, and got down every book which seemed in any way to bear upon the country we had wandered over, regardless of the tongue in which it was written. It was a surprise to us to learn (and may we add that the surprise was not without its pleasant savour?) that of all the volumes in that collection not one covered the route which we took during summer through Arctic Lapland. Many had gone near it, from a gentleman of bygone date who wrote in Latin, to Mr. Paul du Chaillu, who chats about the larger part of the Scandinavian Peninsula. But we seemed to have stumbled across the one bit of Europe which has not been pilloried on paper at one time or another, and so we here venture to take up a couple of note-books which were originally made for personal gratification, and amplify them into a volume of letterpress and sketches which may haply interest others. The Bicycle 200 Years on Two Wheels【電子書籍】[ Mirrorpix ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Bicycle 200 Years on Two Wheels【電子書籍】[ Mirrorpix ]

German Baron Karl von Drais first introduced the two-wheeled tandem human-powered wooden-framed vehicle to the world, in the summer of 1817, its rider gamely steering with the front wheel while pushing along with his feet. After that history is rather vague about the bicycle. We know that the mechanically powered velocipede took off in the 1860s, soon followed by the Penny Farthing, but it wasn't until the late nineteenth century that the golden age of bicycles took off as people realised the freedoms afforded by self-powered travel, and touring and racing became popular pastimes. Today of course cycling is a global phenomenon both in professional sporting and non-professional spheres. This book of stunning photographs charts the evolution of the bicycle across 200 years of history.

Britain's Preserved Trams An Historic Overview【電子書籍】[ Peter Waller ]

It is almost 100 years since the first tram was preserved in Britain, in the century since then a great variety of trams have been saved from tramway systems small and large. Some trams were purchased directly out of service and others were acquired after many years alternative usage, some being summer houses or homes, while others were used on farms or allotments where they served as sheds and out buildings, before being lovingly restored over many years. The story of tram preservation is not wholly positive, in the early days many trams suffered from being stored in the open at unsafe sites, where the historic vehicles were often subjected to acts of vandalism and suffered badly from the weather. This changed to a large extent in 1959, with the acquisition of the site of the future National Tramway Museum at Crich in Derbyshire,, where a comprehensive collection of trams from all over Britain and also foreign tram networks has been assembled, to secure a collection of tramcars for future generations. There is also today fine collections of trams in other museums in Britain and Ireland, which cover much of the rich history of this once common form of public transport. This book looks at almost 200 of these trams when they were in service, through historic photographs, prior to their withdrawal and eventual preservation.

One kept vividly alive, and on the road, by the dedication of owner enthusiasts. Here buses visit the county's spectacular coastlines, climb towards rugged Dartmoor tors, and pass through picturesque towns and rolling countryside. In more than 200 images the author, Roger Malone, has set out to portray the vehicles in surroundings that are sympathetic to the subject, and which often seem timeless. As well as depicting a fascinating array of heritage public transport, his photographs convey much of the county’s superlative scenery - a delight enjoyed by both Devonians and visitors alike. And so we roam from a magical, rain-shiny running night at Exeter to high summer on Plymouth Hoe; from a climb over the high moors to Princetown, to the genteel Regency resort of Sidmouth.

Adrian Vaughan, born in Reading in January 1941, fell in love with the entire spectacle of the steam railway. It was the Greatest Free Show on Earth. It had drama, it had wonderful peace and relaxation, it was musical and it had poetry ? to those lucky enough to be able to appreciate it. Signalman’s Morning is the first of a trilogy tracing a love affair with the coal-fired railway, from love at first sight in 1945 to divorce in 1975. In Signalman’s Twilight, the second part of his trilogy, Adrian continues the story of his railway life in rural West Berkshire, moving from Uffington signal box to that at Challow early in 1962. Signalman’s Nightmare is the third volume of Adrian Vaughan’s memories of his career on the Western Region of British Railways. The book begins in 1962 at Challow. For three years he worked at Uffington, and from Uffington he moved to Oxford’s signal boxes in 1968. In 1973, assailed once more by automation, he headed westwards into Somerset. The Somerset Railway was idyllic but times they were a-changin’. Another automation scheme was impending, Adrian had no intention of taking up a post in that and then, in the sweltering heat of the summer of ’75 he made one last mistake …

Faces of Tibet【電子書籍】[ Wayne Jex ]

These are some of the people I have met in my journeys to Tibet and nearby areas in Asia. The purpose of this book is very simple. It is to connect the person viewing this book to the people of Tibet; from the beggars who came to our camps of foreigners looking for food or a little money, to highly realized Buddhist Lamas. It is to put a human face on Tibet and the issues concerning the Tibetan people. The gaze of most of these people into the camera is direct and unflinching. The eyes communicate to me the pride they have in being Tibetan and in their culture and religion. They communicate strength to me: physical, spiritual, and cultural.

I am hoping that someone picking up this book is either informed about the history of Tibet since 1949, or will be motivated by the book to become more informed about that history and the current situation in Tibet as well as ethnically Tibetan areas. I wont make any political statements myself because I want to eliminate even the possibility of repercussions on any of the people shown because of what I may have said. This is also why I wont give very many names.

A few words about where the photos were taken. The largest number of them were taken at Katog Mardo Tashi Choling, a Buddhist monastery in what was historically the Golok area of Amdo Province of Tibet. It is now part of Qinghai Province of China. I spent 2 months at the monastery in the summer of 2007. The abbot of the monastery is Khentrul Lodro Thaye Rinpoche, who is of the Katog lineage of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. He is now a citizen of the United States and I have been a student of his teaching of the Buddhist Dharma since 2004. His website is: katogcholing.com/ At the peak,

there were over 80 of Khentrul Rinpoches Western students at his monastery. The main reason I went there was that H. H. Katog Moktsa Rinpoche was going to be giving 5 days of empowerments in August. An empowerment is a ritual in Vajrayana Buddhism which initiates a student into a particular deity practice. Moktsa Rinpoche is one of the five golden throne holders of the Nyingma Katog lineage and is revered as "the Father of Katog Lineage". He is the abbot of Katog monastery in the Kham area of Tibet, (now part of Sichuan Province of China) the mother monastery of Katog Mardo Tashi Choling. Its easy to find out a lot more information about both Rinpoches online so I wont give any more information. Tibetan monks and nuns and lay people also journeyed to see him. I and around 10 other Americans arrived about 5 weeks earlier than the majority of the students and helped arrange things for their arrival and helped teach English in the monastery school.

Rinpoche is an honorific term used in Tibetan Buddhism. It literally means "precious one," and is used to address or describe Tibetan lamas and other high-ranking or respected teachers. This honor is generally bestowed on reincarnated lamas, or Tulkus, by default. In other cases it is earned over time, and often bestowed spontaneously by the teacher's students.

A few photos were taken in 2005 when I journeyed to Tibet to do a pilgrimage, or circumambulation, around Mt. Kailash in western Tibet. We started in Lhasa and drove to Mt. Kailash, visiting the cities of Gyantse and Shigatse along the way. Mt. Kailash is the holiest mountain in Tibet to Tibetan Buddhists and also to Hindus. Hindus consider it to be the home of Shiva, and Tibetan Buddhists believe it is the home of the deity Chakrasamvara. The Bon religion, which predates Buddhism in Tibet, believes it is the seat of all spiritual power. It is also significant in Jainism. There is a pilgrimage route of 32 miles around the mountain. At the time you could drive about a third of the 32 miles, and the rest had to be walked. It is considered more beneficial and meritorious to walk the entire way. The Faringdon Branch and Uffington Station【電子書籍】[ Adrian Vaughan ]

The Great Western Railway's main line from London to Bristol, opened throughout in 1841, passed by the ancient market town of Faringdon at a distance of 3A miles to the south. This bypassed town began to go into decline, and planning for a broad gauge railway to connect Faringdon with the GWR main line and thus re-establish a link with the outside world began in 1860. The Faringdon branch railway was built out of equal parts of local patriotism, personal prestige and the desire to improve the business prospects of the town. After the opening of the line, in 1864, new industries were created in the town. Farmers were able to send milk to London. Employment prospects were improved. The railway served the area well through the summer of England's Imperial power and through the miserable winter of an enormous war. With the introduction of the petrol-engined lorries and buses after the Great War, its freight and passenger traffic was gradually taken away. The directors of the GWR knew it was a liability as early as 1925, but they ran it at a loss all the same. It was not closed to passengers until December 1951 and to freight in 1964.

A Month by the Sea Encounters in Gaza【電子書籍】[ Dervla Murphy ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Month by the Sea Encounters in Gaza【電子書籍】[ Dervla Murphy ]

Over the summer of 2011, Dervla Murphy spent a month in the Gaza Strip. She met liberals and Islamists, Hamas and Fatah supporters, rich and poor. Through reported conversations she creates a vivid picture of life in this coastal fragment of self-governing Palestine. Bombed and cut-off from normal contact with the rest of the world, life in Gaza is beset with structural, medical and mental health problems, yet it is also bursting with political engagement and underwritten by an intense enjoyment of family life. During her month by the sea, Dervla develops an acute eye for the way in which isolation has shaped this society. Time and again she meets men who have returned to the Strip as an act of presence. Yet the mosque is often their only daily activity, as difficulties obtaining supplies mean few opportunities for creative work. This acts as a recruiting sergeant for the Islamist Qassam brigades and a pressure cooker for the creation of domestic tyrants. In this situation, Dervla becomes a shameless supporter of women's rights -acting as agony aunt and feminist mentor by turn. The ironies of Western and Israeli attitudes to the Strip are ever present: most notably the championing of democracy yet the refusal to recognize the legitimacy of Hamas; and the way in which violent attempts to eradicate terrorism breathe life into the very monster they aspire to destroy. Even so, there is a still, small note of hope. For underlying the book is Dervla's determination to try to understand how Arab Palestinians and Israeli Jews might forge a solution and ultimately live in peace.

Intended for the British Army as a contract for a small, Jeep-like, air-portable vehicle, the Mini Moke was a failure at this role and found its success as a fun, sunshine toy, equally at home on the beach as in the mountains. Over 50,000 were made and many still survive. Its most famous role was in the cult TV series The Prisoner. The Moke was manufactured in Britain and later in Australia and Portugal. With Mini running gear, the Moke is a practical and fun vehicle for the summer and this explains why so many survive to the present day. John Christopher tells the story of the Moke and the varieties from development to preservation.

Historic Hotels and Motels of the Outer Banks【電子書籍】[ Elizabeth Ownley Cooper ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Historic Hotels and Motels of the Outer Banks【電子書籍】[ Elizabeth Ownley Cooper ]

In the mid-1800s, wealthy farmers and businessmen began bringing their families to North Carolina's Outer Banks to escape the blistering inland summer heat. Soon after, the region's first hotel was built with accommodations for 200 guests. By the mid-1900s, hotels such as the Carolinian, the Nags Header, and the Arlington as well as smaller motels and cottage courts like Journey's End, the Sea Foam, and the Cavalier dotted the coastline. Most motels were independent, family-run operations. Many guests returned yearly, reuniting with the motel owners and other visitors. However, by the end of the 20th century, many of these mom-and-pop establishments had become a distant memory, lost to wrecking balls and replaced by large beach houses. This book recalls these hotels and motels and their impact on the Outer Banks and its visitors.
