Parker, Jr. ┃飲み頃： 2004 - 2015 After less than persuasive performances in two potentially great years, 1989 and 1990, Mouton-Rothschild appears to have settled down, producing fine efforts in recent vintages, culminating with the enormously promising, unquestionably profound 1995. The 1993 is a beautifully made wine which could be considered a sleeper of the vintage. The wine boasts a dark purple color, followed by a sweet, pain grillee, roasted nut, and cassis-scented bouquet that is just beginning to open. In the mouth, the wine may not possess the body and volume of a vintage such as 1990 or 1989, but there is more richness of fruit, a sweet, ripe, pureness to the wine, as well as medium body and outstanding balance. This moderately tannic, well-focused, surprisingly rich 1993 is capable of 15-20 years of evolution. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015. Readers should note that this wine comes with two labels. The original label, with its delicate yet unprovocative portrait nude of a pre-teenager by Balthus, was banned as a result of protests from America's neo-puritans. What has resulted is considerable speculation in the original label, which is selling at $50 more than the blank creamy white-colored label that is "officially" sported by those bottles of Mouton-Rothschild imported to America. Château Mouton Rothschild 赤ワイン 750ml [AOC］ポイヤック 第1級 [評 価］99点 The 2018 Mouton Rothschild is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc—there is also a splash of all the Petit Verdot they had, but it doesn’t even register in the percentage. It has 13.8% alcohol, which is relatively modest for the vintage. Deep garnet-purple colored, it straight away pops with bright, vivacious notes of crushed blackcurrants, juicy blackberries and redcurrant jelly with slowly emerging nuances of candied violets, stewed plums, licorice and black tea, plus a waft of dusty red soil. The medium-bodied palate is built like a brick house with super firm, super ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness supporting the muscular black fruits, finishing long and savory with lingering mineral suggestions. This is so, so delicious and, due to the ripeness of tannins, approachable now. It will be difficult to keep your mitts off it for a good 5-7 years, when all those tightly tucked away nuances should begin to emerge. After that, it should improve over the course of 25 years or more and drink for 40+. There is excellent size, weight and mid-palate density to the large-bodied flavors are at once powerful yet elegant before culminating in a mouth coating, long and ever-so-mildly warm finish. This is a big and ripe but not top-heavy wine that is drinking perfectly well now and one that should continue to do so for at least another decade, perhaps even two. The nose is very seductive with black fruit, leather, scorched earth, a hint of lavender all beautifully defined and quintessentially Margaux. The medium-bodied palate has exquisite balance, the acidity nicely judged, still a little masculine and "solid" compared to the subsequent vintages under Paul Pontallier, yet fresh and vital. Sure, there is a grittiness and a touch of rusticity towards the finish, but all in all, this represents a great 1978 Left Bank and a signpost that the First Growth was back on the right track after a dismal run of vintages during the 1970s. The palate is very well structured, very pure with slightly dark fruit than the Volnay Vendange Selectionee. There is real energy here and a touch of white pepper adorning the long finish. Frederic Lafarge told me he lost 95% of this crop due to hail so there are just two barrels instead of the normal dozen. Good luck tracking a bottle down. I always look forward to my visit to Michel Lafarge in the maze-like alleys of Volnay. In many ways it encapsulates Burgundy: small domaine, choice parcels, great history, a loyal following, dank and claustrophobic vaulted cellars thickly smothered with white mold like something out of a 1974 episode of Dr. Who, a bit disheveled in appearance…untidy perhaps, charismatic bordering upon legendary patriarch and wines so exquisite that they make you want to quit and just go home with that sweet nectar tingling in your mouth. Michel Lafarge himself greeted me at the domaine. He must be over 80years old now but he was still happy to discuss the vintage until his son Frederic came along (doubtlessly delayed by what must be Burgundy’s slowest elevator.) Frederic absolutely loves 2013 and described how it was a long growing season after a humid and wet spring, one where the grapes reached phenolic ripeness at low sugar levels. “We picked from 3 until 9 October,” he explained. “The last time that we had picked in October was in 1980. It is difficult to compare with other vintages. There is ‘big’ purity and it is easy to see the terroir of each of the vineyards. There was little botrytis. We chaptalized by around 0.5 degrees alcohol and the reds finished their malolactic between April and May, the whites by July and then we racked at the end of August.” The bad news of Lafarge fans is that there is just…wait for it…35% of the normal harvest. Yikes. If it is of any consolation a) the wines are so pure and elegant that you feel as if you are peering into the very vines, wines that leave you with a Cheshire cat grin perhaps with the exception of the underpar (on the day) Volnay Mitans '13 and b) the family has just acquired 2.5-hectares in Fleurie, which I look forward to tasting next year. Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux 赤ワイン 750ml [AOC］マルゴー [評 価］95点 Given that Margaux's second wine contains plenty of fruit that made it into the grand vin just a decade or two ago, great things are to be expected from this bottling. Yet I was nonetheless taken aback by the quality of the 2019 Pavillon Rouge. Wafting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, plums and cherries mingled with rose petals and sweet spices, it's medium to full-bodied, sensual and concentrated, with beautifully refined tannins, racy acids and a long, penetrating finish. This is an exquisite Pavillon Rouge that is well worth seeking out. I confess that I don't buy many second wines, but I did purchase a case of this, with alacrity, right after tasting it. It has 13.8% alcohol, which is relatively modest for the vintage. Deep garnet-purple colored, it straight away pops with bright, vivacious notes of crushed blackcurrants, juicy blackberries and redcurrant jelly with slowly emerging nuances of candied violets, stewed plums, licorice and black tea, plus a waft of dusty red soil. The medium-bodied palate is built like a brick house with super firm, super ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness supporting the muscular black fruits, finishing long and savory with lingering mineral suggestions. This is so, so delicious and, due to the ripeness of tannins, approachable now. It will be difficult to keep your mitts off it for a good 5-7 years, when all those tightly tucked away nuances should begin to emerge. This is outstanding. - By Neal Martin on January 2025Domaine de Chevalier / ドメーヌ・ド・シュヴァリエ 近年その評価を上げる、ペサック・レオニャンのトップシャトー！ ペサック・レオニャンの森に囲まれたドメーヌ・ド・シュヴァリエ。「騎士」という意味の「シュヴァリエ」が名前についているのは、このドメーヌがスペインの巡礼地、サンティアゴ・デ・コンポステーラまでの通り道にあり、それを守る騎士という意味で付けられたと言われています。17世紀の資料にはすでに、この地にブドウ畑や醸造施設などがあったことが記されています。 1865年～1983年の間、リカー家が所有し、5代に渡って引き継がれました。2代目のジャン・リカー氏は土地の良さを見抜き、畑を拡大し、3代目のガブリエル・ボーマルタン氏は、ドメーヌ・ド・シュヴァリエの知名度の向上に力を注ぎ、 グラーヴ地区の中で評価の高いシャトーの一つと言われるように。1881年のボルドー・エ・セ・ヴァン誌には、「このシャトーのワインの上品さはブドウ畑によってもたらされ、ブドウ畑は美しい色のワインを作らせる」と記されています。 リカー家4代目、ジャン・リカー氏は先代が維持してきた品質を守り、1940年代に数々の素晴らしいヴィンテージを生み出しました。5代目のクロード・リカー氏は、新しい醸造設備の導入、収穫時の選果を徹底させ、1957年からは赤ワインのマロラクティック発酵を採用。また、ボルドー大学のエミール・ペイノー教授の協力を得て、白ワインの品質を向上させることにも成功しました。 1983年、蒸留酒製造企業を所有していたベルナール家がドメーヌを買収。責任者となったオリヴィエ・ベルナール氏は、先代のクロード・リカー氏と一緒にワイン造りに携わっています。「何もしないことは、何かをすることより難しい。自然を尊重すれば、自然の連鎖、節理で果実は繊細かつエレガントになる」とオリヴィエ・ベルナール氏は語っており、あくまで自然に任せたワイン造りを行っています。 1990年代に入ってから、 そのクオリティにはますます注目が集まっており、現在ではシャトー・オー・ブリオン、シャトー・ラ・ミッション・オー・ブリオンに次ぎ、グラーヴのトップ2～3に入る優良ドメーヌの1つへと成長を遂げています。
