It boasts stunning textural depth and pure richness from start to finish. There is so much sheer intensity of the fruit that the minerality appears virtually hidden. Although the density of the fruit is impressive, this isn’t a particularly elegant or refined Perrieres by Roulot standards, at least not today. Roulot explains that the Perrieres was the last of his wines to finish its malolactic fermentation. In my view it is a bit heavy, although the truth is that most growers would kill to have a wine like this in their cellars. Overall, the 2009 is a mid-weight Montrachet. I would love to see it age for several decades, but it takes a pretty courageous soul to age white Burgundy these days. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and quite textural, with chewy, almost phenolic extract and good length, nicely balanced in this sometimes-blowsy vintage. On the palate, its full-bodied, satiny and layered, with a fleshy, multidimensional core, lively acids and an elegant profile, without the muscle of a vintage such as 2005 or 1989 but with more concentration than a supple, open-knit year such as 2000. Offering up a stunning bouquet of confit lemons, honeycomb, vine blossom and freshly baked bread, its full-bodied, ample and multidimensional, with incredible concentration, a firm chassis of structuring dry extract, lively acids and a long finish that still displays considerable youthful drive. This is a muscular, imposing Chevalier that nods to the 1989 vintage in style, though if anything its better balanced. Today, while its still a youthful wine, its beginning to arrive at early maturity, and its as pleasurable as it is impressive. Sadly, however, I have encountered oxidized bottles of the 2005, and this perfect example only made that more poignant. Its nose of diverse citrus and pit fruits is tinged with notes of toast and vanilla. The finish here really “Charms”, enveloping and fanning out expansively, with no let up in sweetness of fruit or suggestions of crushed stone. “Honestly,” Lafon remarks, “when you taste wine from the 70 year old vines before racking, it’s just so lean and so mineral that on its own it’s almost undrinkable, too tough” and benefits from “a portion of young vines which is always much more up-front.” Expect this to be worth following for at least 8-10 years. The spicy, subtly bitter 2005 is polished and well-concentrated, but betrays extraneous hints of barrel and heat, and was outclassed by its siblings on both occasions when I tasted it.(The Wine Advocate, Dec 22, 2008)
