The Klein Constantia 2021 Vin de Constance reflects a great vintage on the Cape. The three-week period in March when fruit is harvested is Winemaker Matthew Days favorite time of year. He loves the way the sunshine hits this beautiful part of the vineyard. Muscat de Frontignan is planted to 40% bush vines and 60% trellised vines (this section is harvested last). They make as many as 25 to 30 passes through the vineyard at harvest. Because Muscat lacks acidity, they pick the bush vines early. Magic happens, he says, during maceration, when aromas of candied fruit and honey fill the winery. This is a beautifully balanced wine that stands on three pillars, all carefully aligned: sugar, acidity and alcohol. This vintage has 165 grams per liter of residual sugar and between 14% and 14.5% alcohol. Micro-oxidation is encouraged through the oak, especially during the first one and a half years of maturation. Made from grapes sourced from four sites in three regions, namely Stellenbosch, Elgin and the Overberg, this wine has all the trappings of a cool climate masterpiece clearly moulded on a fresh vintage of Pouilly Fuisse or Saint Veran in Burgundy. Matured for eight months in barrels utilising 10% new oak, the wine reveals an attractively perfumed nose of honey suckle, white citrus, lemon verbena, popcorn, grated lime peel, zingy lemongrass and gentle herbal notes that intermingle with subtle leesy, biscuity nuances. On the palate there are deliciously racy acids that invigorate the taste buds, framing an intense yellow citrus fruit and oatmeal concentration that melts into a stony river pebble minerality. Fabulous laser sharp texture with a fine, linear cool climate precision, majestic crystallinity and a classically restrained finish. White Burgundy drinkers are going to be bowled over by its light touch 12.5% alcohol as well as its decidedly old world demeanour. Drink this on release and over the next 3 to 5+ years. ＜GS94＞☆

Lush and intense but also refined on the palate, this is a crystalline, persistently saline and complex BA with vibrantly fresh acidity that causes great precision, finesse and elegance, along with a very long, very intense and even complex finish. If you are looking for a weightless BA with the precision of an Eiswein, this Hubertuslay is a hot option. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from a 375-milliliter bottle in May 2023. Markus Molitor doesn't know bad vintages; at most, there are difficult ones. Almost each vintage has its challenges, plus the size of Weingut Markus Molitor-which hasn't been talked about for many years but should be more than 100 hectares, the 25-hectare Domaine Serrig in the Saar not included-can also cause difficulties. In truly challenging vintages, such as 2021 and also 2022, a big crowd of pickers can't be everywhere at the same time, so Molitor had to give up parcels weeks before the harvest. In the end, the list of the current collection, with the focus on the 2021 Rieslings and the 2019 Pinot Noirs, is still impressive. Even after the reduction, I had 88 wines to taste here. Although the 2021 vintage brought Molitor's very first Scharzhofbergers, it is the first vintage since I began reviewing his wines for the Wine Advocate (starting with the 2013 vintage) that doesn't include a 100-pointer so far. The Hubertuslay Beerenauslese * was very, very close, and the TBAs are still fermenting... The "lack" of a 100-pointer in the 2021 vintage is not really surprising, though. The late-ripening vintage was dramatic in terms of rainfall and cooler temperatures throughout the vegetation period, and the pickings had to be very selective. The Molitor team did a great job again, and the nature of the vintage is mirrored in the lineup: I had 34 dry whites to taste, of which 31 were Riesling-five were Kabinett, seven Spatlese and 10 were Auslese quality (six two-starred, four three-starred), and the rest are sold without predicate as Qualitatswein. Only seven wines were green-capsuled, which means feinherb or off-dry (one Kabinett, one Auslese (one star), four Spatlese and one without predicate). The second big group of the list are the 31 gold-capsuled sweet wines, of which 13 are Auslese (two one-starred, three two-starred, eight three-starred) and two one-starred Beerenauslesen. Three top crus come as dry quality wine without predicate. As usual, they are Erdener Pralat, Scharzhofberger and Bernkasteler Doctor. This is quite sensational for a producer who insisted for decades on the Pradikatswein system for dry wines as well, including the grands crus. The estate and village dry wines have been an exception for a while; but for the most prestigious crus of the portfolio, this is breaking news. "The vintage simply wasn't ripe enough for the very top quality," Molitor explained, and he said this will also be the case for the 2022 vintage. The renunciation of the predicate, no matter which one, enabled Molitor to slightly improve the musts in order to be able to give the wines the desired (and probably also expected) body. The grands crus Pralat and Doctor and probably also Scharzhofberger are, after all, exceptionally expensive wines by German standards. Collectors who spend 700 to 1,500 euros for a bottle of Riesling may indeed expect a certain amount of power and concentration on the palate, even if the vintage did not voluntarily give these characteristics. Molitor has never sold his three top wines under the Auslese label, at least not among the dry-fermented versions. Will 2021 and 2022 bring about a change? Molitor has no final thoughts on this yet, but simply selling the wines under their site name, as their colleagues in Burgundy do, is a serious consideration. Other news might be that Molitor for the first time revealed in our conversation (but not on the label) that three of his 2021 top dry (white-capsuled) Rieslings were vinified exclusively in "alternative" vats: the Ockfener Bockstein Auslese ***, the Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese *** and the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese *** were all vinified in a concrete egg and in clay amphorae. None of the wines have been released yet, and there is no schedule for them. The wines are fabulous and represent all the energy and vibrancy of the 2021 vintage, particularly their terroirs. Molitoir's finest 2021s are the sweet (gold capsuled) Erdener Pralat Auslese *** and the Hubertuslay Beerenauslese *, the Erdener Treppchen Auslese ***, the Zeltlinger Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (sweet and dry AP 92 from the amphora), the Scharzhofberger Spatlese and, last but not least, the dry Scharzhofberger. There is also an impressive gold-capsuled Kabinett of the Scharzhofberger, yet no wines of this iconic site have been released yet. We will probably have to wait for the auction either this or next year. Ripe stone fruit aromas intermingle with notes of crushed stones on a deep foundation of aromas from the soil and the fruit of old vines. On the palate, the 2021 is very fine but also intense, savory, saline and lush, leading to a long, intense and highly digestible finish with crunchy and cleansing slate features. Again, this is a fabulous Auslese from Prum's iconic Sonnenuhr. 7% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2023. Katharina Prum showed me her 2021s earlier this month because she prefers to present her newest vintage only after two winters following the harvest, with which I fully agree, even if the wines are offered earlier in certain markets. The 2021 vegetation year contrasts madly with the previous year, 2022. What was too dry in 2022 was too wet and cool in 2021. The consequences for both extreme vintages, however, were similar. The grapes did not reach the highest concentrations and must weights, which, for different reasons, made both vintages primarily classic Kabinett and Spatlese years. Nevertheless, there are sometimes grandiose Auslese and even higher Pradikate, but they were not the rule. At Prum, at any rate, there are no less than four Auslese, including a celestial one from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, which was auctioned off, as well as a Kabinett and a Spatlese from the same site. As is well known, Prum is the top dog in this vineyard and, even after the land consolidation, has a good proportion of old and very old vines. Compared to the Graachers, Wehleners and Zeltingers, the Bernkasteler Rieslings of the domaine fell off somewhat in 2021 and did not achieve the usual precision and finesse. However, this may have been due to the rain, because there was plenty of it in 2021, especially in Bernkastel. So, back to the weather. Winter 2021 was overall cold, humid and also lasted a bit longer than in the previous two years, reports Prum. December 2020 was wet overall, with well-above-average water amounts (+46%) and temperatures slightly above the long-term average. January and February were wintry and satisfactory in terms of precipitation, thoroughly soaking the soils with water before the warmer months of the year began (similar to 2023). March and April were then drier than the average of recent years but also cold, with a total of 15 frost days. Budding and flowering occurred about two weeks later than average. After slightly above-average amounts in May and June, precipitation peaked in July with a plus of 130% or, expressed in liters, 160 liters per square meter above the long-term average! This led to flooding-not only in the Ahr Valley but also on the Moselle, though there on a much less dramatic scale. The large amount of rain boosted vegetation, keeping the Prum team quite busy with canopy management during the following weeks when high-pressure weather was rare (as it was throughout the growing season). "Approaching autumn, temperatures remained relatively moderate, with the regional typicity of cool nights starting to happen," reports Prum. Harvest kicked off on October 11 and lasted until November 15. "It was a very demanding harvest, when most parcels were picked multiple times in order to select the individual grapes at best ripeness levels," says Prum. However, there was not any considerable amount of botrytized grapes picked. "We were very much looking forward to the cooler style of the 2021s, which we consider as a welcome alternation to the previous-and most probably also future-vintages. The palate is a gorgeously concentrated stream of ripe citrus, combining the aromatic intensity and ripeness of Amalfi lemon, the brightness of lime and the sweetness of sugared orange flesh. The Prum family has been in the region since the twelfth century. They are one of the estates that managed to buy vineyard holdings after Napoleon’s secularization when this part of Germany temporarily became a French departement. It was the family ancestor Jodocus Prum who, in 1842, built the famous eponymous sundial in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr. The riverside villa in Wehlen looks across the river to this storied vineyard. The estate was founded in 1911 by Johan Josef Prum. His grandson Manfred Prum, who ran the estate from 1969 onwards, is now 89 years old. As a brief appearance during my visit made apparent, he is still in fine fettle, with a ready smile for any guest who comes to taste (by appointment, of course.) His daughter Katharina Prum took over in 2005 and now runs the estate with much elan and consistency - continuing its emphatically elegant style. No dry wines are made at Joh. Jos. Prum and all fruit is estate grown. Total holdings are 21 hectares, including a big swathe of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Bernkasteler Badstube and Bernkasteler Lay. Viticulturist Marvin Bauer leads a crew of seven full-time employees, occasionally assisted by up to 40 seasonal workers for canopy management and harvest. Cuvée Oligocène comes off the lieu-dit Pellans, on the Puligny side of Meursault, with 40 year old vines rooted in brown limestone. Profound and flinty at first, this savoury wine courses with energy. After some air time the flintiness moves more into lightly toasted wood, which remains on the lingering finish. Subtle white flowers, green apple, lightly smoked crushed stone, and lemon pith flood the medium bodied palate. Punching quite a bit beyond its weight as a humble Bourgogne Côte d'Or, this is more interesting than many Meursault I've tried of late.＜AG92＞☆

Exhibiting aromas of gooseberries, nectarine, confit citrus and pastry cream, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy but incisive, with a textural attack and a bright, saline finish. It's a blend of 72% Sauvignon Blanc, only 22% S?millon, 5% Sauvignon Gris and 1% Muscadelle. This 32.5-hectare estate is surrounded by the city of Bordeaux, not far from Haut-Brion. In the vineyards, farming is thoughtful, with Esca-infected vines counted and registered by tractor, and both horses and an electric tractor are employed to avoid compacting the soils-and to respect the neighboring dwellings. While the ch?teau isn't organic, the use of chemical products is kept to a minimum, and activity in the estate's beehives is monitored immediately after a treatment to verify that there hasn't been any adverse impact. Planted in red with roughly equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and in white with roughly equal parts Sauvignon Blanc and S?millon, Pape Cl?ment produces some of Pessac-L?ognan's richest, most dramatic wines, though recent years have seen a discreet turn toward a somewhat more restrained style, a shift especially obvious in the ch?teau's white wine: Merlot is picked a touch earlier than in the past; foudres and large-format oak barrels now supplement 225-liter barriques; and the percentage of new oak is more modest. Brimming with tension and vivacity, it fans out gloriously towards the finish. It gently builds in the mouth, mustering more and more precision until the finish that delivers lemongrass mixed with orange zest notes. This will be fascinating to revisit after bottling. On the palate, this is a rich, lush, intense yet refined, salty and salivating Hengst with intense and complex fruit with firm but fine tannin grip. Even after 5 years the nose remains restrained but exceptionally elegant and pure with aromas of white flower, green apple, pear and wet stone. There is plenty of minerality to the rich, full and highly energetic flavors that tighten up considerably on the detailed, minerally and moderately dry finish that displays distinct citrus and mineral nuances. This is still quite tight and linear with huge amounts of dry extract that renders the very firm acid spine almost invisible at present though the long finish is clearly shaped by it. This magnificent Chevalier is now knocking on the door of its full maturity though I stress that there is no rush to drink up as this should hold well for years. It was a warm year, but the wine feels more like it's from a cool climate; it has a moderate 11.5% alcohol and is volcanic and less reductive than in previous years, fine-boned and sharp, with a vibrant palate, effervescent acidity (7.1 grams and a pH of 3.05) and a dry chalkiness that gives it salinity. It's approachable but should also age in bottle. 13,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2024. 2023 was drier in Tenerife than 2022 and was their earliest harvest everywhere except in Taganana where they had over 500 liters of rain, yet the wines from Envinate are phenomenal. In Santiago del Teide (Benje) it was warmer, with high peaks that blocked the plants and they had to lower the crop. It was a heterogeneous vintage there, and they had to harvest very early and sort and select and do shorter macerations that resulted in more immediate wines. They produced 50% less, even though they had leased a further three hectares. Now all their wines from the different zones are sold under the Tenerife appellation within Islas Canarias, and they have taken Benje out of the Ycoden-Daute-Isora DOP. In La Orotava, 2023 was a very concentrated year that produced powerful wines with aging potential. Santa Ursula is quite similar to La Orotava, as they neighbor each other. There was a fire there the 15th of August, but the wind blew in the opposite direction, and the wines did not get the much-feared smoke taint. But they harvested the first plots the sixth of August, and they had to pick the rest after the harvest, as the zone was cut off from traffic. In Taganana, 2023 was different from the rest of the island. It was the rainiest year there, they got higher crops and they have more vineyards. So, the wines from Taganana come from a textbook vintage when they harvested healthy grapes in good quantity, and the wines have a lot of finesse?a cooler and deeper version of the 2021s. ≪パーカーポイント 92‐95点！≫ 2023 Domaine Vincent Dauvissat Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons The Wine Advocate RP (92-95) Reviewed by:Kristaps Karklins Release Price:NA Drink Date:N/A Informed by deeper soil than Sechet, the 2023 Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons opens from the glass with aromas of honeysuckle, white peach, tangerine and smoke. Extroverted, full-bodied and textural, with a chalky grip and saline finish, Vaillons is more open-knit than its neighbor Sechet. However, this youthful charm can be deceitful, as, based on my experience enjoying this cuvee 10 or even 15 years after harvest, it always richly rewards patience. Vincent Dauvissat is one of the greatest vignerons in France, producing some of the most soulful wines not just in Chablis but across the entire Burgundy region. Dauvissat, who once considered a career as a shepherd, ultimately became a vigneron and, though technically retired, remains a vital presence at his eponymous domaine. His personality, both meditative and meticulous, is reflected in his wines, which, provided the cork holds well, are incredibly long-lived. The estate's 12-hectare size is modest but enough to have built a strong reputation for itself and vineyards?there’s hardly anyone more synonymous with Sechet or La Forest than Dauvissat. Its farming practices are organic, though not certified. Harvest is done by hand, and after fermentation in tanks, the wines are racked into barrels (including the smaller-sized feuillettes, which are easy to spot when tasting at this address, as they are placed in the very center of the cellar), where they spend two winters aging on the fine lees. Dauvissat’s wines go into barrel after fermentation in tank with plenty of lees, and perhaps this provides a point of distinction?in addition, of course, to different farming practices?from Raveneau's somewhat broader-shouldered, more textural wines, which go into barrel with very little in the way of solids. Another distinguishing feature of Dauvissat’s winemaking is the handling of the wines post-aging: the first bottling, typically destined for the American market, undergoes light filtration, while a second?a later bottling?is unfiltered, and some of those are sealed with wax, while others see a foil capsule. The range begins with Petit Chablis, based on parcels of Portlandian limestone, and Chablis Village, produced mostly from vines that face his holdings in La Forest, both routinely overperforming the reputation of their appellations and are aging very well. The range continues with four premiers crus: Sechet is a dry and mineral wine, sourced from a small parcel within Vaillons where hard limestone lies close to the surface. It is distinct from Vaillons itself, which is broader and more textural, as the soils here are deeper. The contender to Vaillons for the most youthfully expressive, charming wine is Montee de Tonnerre, the most powerful of his premiers crus. One of the best-known wines is the taut and remarkably pure La Forest; amounting to 4.5 hectares, La Forest accounts for a third of the domaine’s surface area. The grand cru duo completes the range, standing out as particularly mineral and pure?Les Preuses is more ethereal, while the muscular, richly structured Les Clos offers a striking contrast. Which of the two is superior is open to interpretation, but at their best, these are some of the finest white wines in Burgundy. Dauvissat’s wines are highly structured and can be tight and even closed in the early years after bottling. However, with proper aging?often 10 to 15 years?they reveal their full potential, offering a deep expression of the site. While much commercial Chablis is utterly predictable, Vincent Dauvissat’s old-fashioned wines are anything but: their phases of evolution and the way they respond to oxygen are unlike almost anything else in the region. This also means that for younger vintages decanting or early opening is highly recommended. As the wine ages, it is more marked by producer and vineyard than it is by its vintage signature, which is another recurring theme with Dauvissat’s wines. There’s no grower in the region who has done a better job of retaining all of Chablis’s classical signatures, even in the warm, sunny vintages that are more present in the contemporary Chablis, as the wines retain the tension and salinity one seeks where many others produce more fruit-driven, even soft wines.
