The Life of Harkhuf【電子書籍】[ Scriptural Research Institute ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Life of Harkhuf【電子書籍】[ Scriptural Research Institute ]

The life of Harkhuf is one of the better-documented lives from the era of the Old Kingdom era of Egyptian history. Harkhuf lived during the reigns of kings Merenre I and Pepi II of the 6?? Dynasty, at the same time as the more famous Weni, whom he may have mentioned in his autobiography. Like Weni, he is primarily known from the inscriptions on his tomb, however, unlike Weni, he only seems to have had one tomb. On the front of his tomb were carved two inscriptions, one promising to intercede in the afterlife for those who prayed for him at his tomb, and the other was his autobiography, telling of his three expeditions into Nubia for King Merenre I. This appears to have been the original design of the tomb, as the front of the tomb was completely covered in the two inscriptions, however, like Weni, he later had more to add. Unlike Weni, Harkhuf did not build a second tomb, instead, he had one side of the tomb smoothed off so a letter to him from King Pepi II could be inscribed there, providing more information about the world he lived in.

Harkhuf lived during the 6?? Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, which would have been at the peak of the Old Kingdom’s international reach, but after the major pyramid-building feats of the 4?? Dynasty were completed. Egypt had already built the tallest building in the world around a century before Harkhuf’s expeditions into Nubia, which would continue to be the tallest building in the world for thousands of years, until the completion of the Lincoln Cathedral in 1311 AD. As Merenre I is only believed to have ruled for around 9 years, Harkhuf and Weni had to be active in Nubia at the same time. Weni’s Autobiography includes two lists of Nubian tribes, first a list of five tribes that fought in Canaan with the Egyptian army, and later a list of four tribes when he went to Nubia to dig five canals to open the region to trade via Egyptian barges.

Nubia was the land to the south of Egypt, was Aswan and Elephantine at the First Cataract of the Nile. Elephantine, under its older Egyptian name Abu was mentioned as one of the mines that Weni visited, however, was considered Egyptian during the Old Kingdom, and marked the boundary between the two cultures. As only four of the five Nubian tribes that Weni mentioned are mentioned by Harkhuf, it allows both their routes through Nubia to be compared and tracked, establishing where the Nubian settlements were probably located.

The Amarna Letters【電子書籍】[ Scriptural Research Institute ]

The Amarna Letters are a collection of clay tablets found in the ruins of El Amarna, Egypt, in the 1880s. The city of El Amarna was built by the Pharaoh Akhenaten, during his religious reforms in the 1340s BC, but was then abandoned after he died and Egypt reverted to worshiping the old gods. These letters provide a unique glimpse into a period of Egyptian history, that the Egyptians themselves attempted to erase. After Akhenaten's heir Tutankhamen died, his successor Ay was only able to hold the throne for a few years before Horemheb seized it, and attempted to reunite the Egyptians by erasing all records of Akhenaten's reforms, which included erasing Akhenaten's name from almost every record in Egypt. By this period, El Amarna appears to have already been mostly abandoned, and therefore Egyptologists were able to reconstruct the strange story of Akhenaten's reign, in the middle of the New Kingdom era.

The Amarna letters were recovered from the royal archives in El Amarna, where they appear to have been archived after having been translated for the royal court. The letters are inscribed on clay tablets in Cuneiform, the dominant form of writing in Mesopotamia, Canaan, and the neighboring cultures in Anatolia and Cyprus at the time. The shape of the Cuneiform logograms used is Akkadian, the parent form of the later Neo-Babylonian, Neo-Assyrian, and Ugaritic forms of Cuneiform, however, the language used in the Letters is not pure Akkadian. The Letters are between various members of the Egyptian royal court, and many different cities and nations across the Middle East, including Babylon, Assyria, Mitanni, and Cyprus, and therefore the language within the Letters is not consistent. Within the letters from Canaanite cities, all of which were subject to Egypt at the time, several transliterated names are also used, which appears to be a direct precursor to the later development of Ugaritic Cuneiform by 1200 BC, which was an abjad similar to the Canaanite script that was developed by 1000 BC, however, used Cuneiform logograms instead of alphabet-like letters.

The surviving letters were mostly about trade and diplomacy, however, do include a great deal of information about what was happening in the Middle East at the time. In particular, they demonstrate how limited Egypt's actual control of its Canaanite holdings was, where the governors of cities were constantly requesting military help to defend themselves against each other, the marauding Habirus, and the Hittite-backed Amorites in northern Canaan. The Amarna Letters were written during the mid-1330s BC, during the reigns of the Pharaohs Amenhotep III and Akhenaten, although it is not always clear when in their respective reigns the letters were written, or even which pharaoh was on the throne at the time.

A Place to Call Home【電子書籍】[ Dr. Tom Obondo Okoyo ]

A Place to Call Home is a story of refugees no community wanted to see anywhere close to them, as if they were good for nothing. It is an epic portrayal of a painful dilemma of thousands of homeless internally displaced persons (IDPs) who were victims of the highly contested and disputed presidential election. The novel is a true, tear-jerking reflection of a botched election in December 2007 and January 2008, which culminated into a postelection violence that brutally killed almost there thousand innocent people. Some were burned alive inside a churchGods territory as they calledwhere they had taken safe haven. About seven hundred thousand people were forcibly removed from their homes; some took refuge at police stations, while others fled to neighboring countries to remain alive. Business premises, vehicles, and other properties worth billions of shillings were destroyed, and domestic animals were stolen. This spate of violence happened at a time when thousands of ethnic militias heavily armed with homemade crude weapons were chanting war slogans and singing traditional war songs everywhere in the country. Loyal to their respective presidential candidates, the militias roamed the streets of towns and villages, making every journey perilous. Enemies who got caught were beheaded, and their heads were paraded or displayed on the main highways. Women were seized and gang-raped by the militias and got infected with the deadly HIV-AIDS virus. Amazingly, communities turned their backs against the combined IDPs who were looking for a permanent settlement, calling them foreigners, invaders, or land grabbers in their own country. Breathing under such horrifying circumstances, all IDPs drawn from various tribes resolved to live together in peace and harmony and to prove to the world that they could live with people from other communities without any problem, in spite of their language and cultural barriers. The idea of living together was instilled in the IDPs by VP Nyandege, who emerged as the leading light in their plight and the quest for what they could call home. VP Nyandege won a special place in fellow IDPs hearts and made them believe that life was worth fighting for. For seven years, these IDPs have been living in squalid conditions or in makeshift camps, waiting to be settled as promised by the ruling elite. The IDPs lived in rough and ready dwellings with no food, water, toilet facilities, social amenities, or sanitation at all. They were living in a world of their own; no laws, rules, or culture to observe. The fate of these IDPs is reminiscent of the Jews when they lived in Europe and were rejected by people in all countries after World War II and consequently had no place to call their home. After seven years in isolated makeshift camps, the IDPs were offered land to settle on by the Biblical Good Samaritan to prove that tribal groups, once sworn enemies, could live together peacefully and harmoniously. And now these IDPs would like to build the countrys first utopia, the same way the Israelis have transformed the desert land of Israel into another biblical Promised Land of Canaan, the land of milk and honey. (This unfortunate event was disseminated throughout the world by the mass media.)

The Grass Widow A Novel【電子書籍】[ Mary Burnett Smith ]

Through the reminiscences of Kate Hamilton, an African American woman living in rural Furlong County, Virginia, The Grass Widow reveals the effects of deceit and adultery on the marriage of a young, impressionable girl.

It is August, 1988, and on her porch Kate, now a sensitive, attractive woman of fifty-eight, contemplates events during her forty-year marriage to her philandering husband, Elmore, who five years earlier had a stroke when he discovered a letter indicating that Kate had been unfaithful. Feeling that she is partly to blame for his stroke, she has dutifully cared for him until he is almost recovered. Now she awaits the yearly homecoming visit of her sisters Olivia and Lydia, who want to sell the family farm and persuade Kate and Elmore to live with them in Pennsylvania. But Kate laments the disappearance of the large farms around their own property, realizing that the sale of theirs will hasten the disappearance of the small African American community which centers around her church, Canaan Baptist.

Kates strong attachment to Furlong is also tied to her friendship with Myrtle Bless, an old civil rights activist and family friend, as well as to her church, and her duty to her marriage vows. Her sisters, long aware of the life she has led as Elmores wife, badger her to come live with them even if he refuses. By the end of their visit she faces a dilemma. Should she go with her sisters or stay in Furlong and continue her life with Elmore? Then after the sudden death of Myrtle Bless, a freakish accident occurs, one that leads Kate to make a surprising choice.

The Archaeology of the Cuneiform Inscriptions【電子書籍】[ Rev. Archibald Henry Sayce ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Archaeology of the Cuneiform Inscriptions【電子書籍】[ Rev. Archibald Henry Sayce ]

The first six chapters which follow, embody the Rhind Lectures in Arch?ology which I delivered at Edinburgh in October 1906. The seventh chapter appeared as an article in the Contemporary Review for August 1905, and is here reprinted by the courtesy of the Editor to whom I render my thanks. The book is the first attempt to deal with what I would call the arch?ology of cuneiform decipherment, and like all pioneering work consequently claims the indulgence of the reader. For the sake of clearness I have been forced to repeat myself in a few instances, more especially in the sixth chapter, but what has thereby been lost in literary finish will, I hope, be compensated by an increase of clearness in the argument. If what I have written serves no other purpose, I shall be content if it draws attention to the miserably defective state of our arch?ological knowledge of Babylonia and Assyria, and to the necessity of scientific excavations being carried on there similar to those inaugurated by Mr. Rhind in Egypt. We have abundance of epigraphic material; it is the more purely arch?ological material that is still wanting. The need of it is every year becoming more urgent with the ever-growing revelation of the important and far-reaching part played by Babylonian culture in the ancient East. Excavation is just commencing in Asia Minor, and there are many indications that it has startling discoveries and surprises in store for us. Even while my manuscript was in the printer’s hands, Professor Winckler has been examining the cuneiform tablets found by him last spring at Boghaz Keui, on the site of the old Hittite capital in Cappadocia, and reading in them the records of the Hittite kings, Khattu-sil, Sapaluliuma, Mur-sila and Muttallu. Most of the tablets, though written in cuneiform characters, are in the native language of the country, but among them is a version in the Babylonian language of the treaty between the “great king of the Hittites” and Riya-masesa Mai or Ramses II., the Egyptian copy of which has long been known to us. The two Arzawan letters in the Tel el-Amarna collection no longer stand alone; the Boghaz Keui tablets show that an active correspondence was carried on between Egypt and Cappadocia. We must revise our old ideas about an absence of intercourse between different parts of the ancient Oriental world: there was quite as much intercommunication as there is to-day. Elam and Babylonia, Assyria and Asia Minor, Palestine and Egypt, all were linked together by the ties of a common culture; there were no exclusive religions to raise barriers between nation and nation, and the pottery of the Hittites was not only carried to the south of Canaan, but the civilization of Babylonia made its way through Hittite lands to the shores and islands of Greece. On the south, the ?gean became a highway from Asia Minor to Europe, while northward the Troad formed a bridge which carried the culture of Cappadocia to the Balkans and the Danube.

In 'Joshua,' Georg Ebers weaves a masterful narrative that explores the depth of faith, identity, and leadership through the life of the biblical figure Joshua. Ebers employs a rich, descriptive literary style, melding historical detail with spiritual introspection, which immerses readers in the cultural and religious milieu of ancient Israel. The novel not only dramatizes Joshua's military campaigns and the conquest of Canaan but also delves into his personal struggles and divine encounters, echoing the themes of duty and faith found in religious texts. Ebers' work stands as a significant contribution to the genre of historical fiction, reflecting the 19th-century fascination with biblical narratives while inviting contemporary reflections on morality and belief. Georg Ebers, a noted German novelist and Egyptologist, drew upon his scholarly background and deep-seated interest in ancient cultures to craft 'Joshua.' His extensive travels and studies in Egypt and the Near East provided him with a fertile foundation for understanding the complexities of the historical and spiritual contexts presented in the book. This enriching backdrop undoubtedly influenced his portrayal of Joshua as a multifaceted leader confronting both external battles and internal dilemmas. 'Joshua' is highly recommended for readers seeking a profound exploration of faith and leadership within an engaging historical context. Ebers' novel not only serves as an enthralling story but also prompts reflection on the timeless questions of purpose and divine guidance. Its lyrical prose, combined with vivid portrayals of character and setting, will captivate anyone interested in the intersections of history and spirituality.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Lords of Darkness A History of the 45Th Avn Bn (Sp Ops) and Okarng Aviation【電子書籍】[ COL Billy R. Wood ]

Prior to 1979, you probably hadnt heard of counterterrorism or Special Operations. Even so, special warriors have been around since Moses sent Joshua to spy out the land of Canaan. In 1986, Colonel Billy R. Wood served as the operations officer of the newly organized 45th Aviation Battalion (Special Operations). This unit was highly classified. The special operations training and missions carried out by the team were conducted in secret, and members couldnt even tell their wives and families where they were going. These soldiers were called the Lords of Darkness. Prior to its formation, much was written about the failed hostage rescue mission in Iran. The Pentagon leadership implied, Whatever the costs, whatever we do, we can never have another Desert One. Secret exercises were conducted with modified aircraft and soon-to-be-skilled night flyers of Task Force 160, today known as Night Stalkers. What you didnt read about was the other US Army Special Operations Aviation Battalionan Army National Guard unit. Highly classified and therefore less known, it was a mirror image special aviation unit. You didnt realize they existed because you werent supposed to know. These teachers, businessmen, lawyers, salesman, citizen soldiers, and traditional guardsmen were called the Lords of Darkness of the Oklahoma Army National Guard. The night belonged to themand their hearts belonged to aviation.

Understanding the Old Testament From Creation Through Captivity【電子書籍】[ James D. Orten ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Understanding the Old Testament From Creation Through Captivity【電子書籍】[ James D. Orten ]

Written especially for those who have found the Old Testament confusing, this book explains the essence of it in clear, readable language. The author, a university professor, believes that mental preparation for what is ahead promotes understanding. Thus readers are given a brief preview of each section that alerts their minds for material and concepts to come.

Part One opens with a mental framework for comprehending the Old Testament. It discusses the problems many readers face, gives internal and external evidence that the history of the Old Testament is trustworthy, and takes the reader on a walk with Abraham through the geography and culture of the O.T. world. Part Two begins with creation and covers the first 2500 years of human history ending with the enslavement of the Jews in Egypt. The spiritual significance of these great events for modern readers is explained by examples of how God's actions in one age foreshadowed those to come in later times.

The drama of God's historical relationship with man is continued in Part Three by walking with the Israelites on their exodus from Egypt, God's appearance to them in the desert of Sinai, and their conquest of Canaan. Puzzling questions such as: Why were the Israelites unable to completely clear the land of their enemies? Why did God not want them to have a king for the first 400 years of their settlement in Canaan? These and many more are discussed.

Section Four describes the kingdom years. It traces the history of the nation, noting the actions of the kings and the work of God's prophets with them and the people. The nation's division into two kingdoms (known as Israel and Judah), their spiritual declines, and the work of reformer kings and prophets to bring them back comprise the meat of this section. The book closes with a discussion of the captivity, the restoration, and the silent years between the Old and New Testaments. It leaves the reader, as the O.T. was intended to do, with the expectation of and preparation for the coming of the Messiah. Charts, Maps, illustrations, and a lively and insightful style make this book an excellent resource for individual and small group study.

A few years ago the subject-matter of the present volume might have been condensed into a few pages. Beyond what we would gather from the Old Testament, we knew but little about the history and geography of Canaan before the age of its conquest by the Israelites. Thanks, however, to the discovery and decipherment of the ancient monuments of Babylonia and Assyria, of Egypt and of Palestine, all this is now changed. A flood of light has been poured upon the earlier history of the country and its inhabitants, and though we are still only at the beginning of our discoveries we can already sketch the outlines of Canaanitish history, and even fill them in here and there. Throughout I have assumed that in the narrative of the Pentateuch we have history and not fiction. Indeed the archaeologist cannot do otherwise. Monumental research is making it clearer every day that the scepticism of the so-called "higher criticism" is not justified in fact. Those who would examine the proofs of this must turn to my book on The Higher Criticism and the Verdict of the Monuments. There I have written purely as an archaeologist, who belongs to no theological school, and consequently readers of the work must see in it merely the irreducible minimum of confidence in the historical trustworthiness of the Old Testament, with which oriental archaeology can be satisfied. But it is obvious that this irreducible minimum is a good deal less than what a fair-minded historian will admit. The archaeological facts support the traditional rather than the so-called "critical" view of the age and authority of the Pentateuch, and tend to show that we have in it not only a historical monument whose statements can be trusted, but also what is substantially a work of the great Hebrew legislator himself. For those who "profess and call themselves Christians," however, there is another side to the question besides the archaeological. The modern "critical" views in regard to the Pentateuch are in violent contradiction to the teaching and belief of the Jewish Church in the time of our Lord, and this teaching and belief has been accepted by Christ and His Apostles, and inherited by the Christian Church. It is a teaching and belief which lies at the root of many of the dogmas of the Church, and if we are to reject or revise it, we must at the same time reject and revise historical Christianity. It is difficult to see how we can call ourselves Christians in the sense which the term has borne for the last eighteen hundred years, and at the same time repudiate or modify, in accordance with our individual fancies, the articles of faith which historical Christianity has maintained everywhere and at all periods. For those who look beyond the covers of grammars and lexicons, the great practical fact of historical Christianity must outweigh all the speculations of individual scholars, however ingenious and elaborate they may be. It is for the individual to harmonize his conclusions with the immemorial doctrine of the Church, not for the Church to reconcile its teaching with the theories of the individual. Christ promised that the Spirit of God should guide His Apostles and their followers into "all truth," and those who believe the promise cannot also believe that the "Spirit of Truth" has been at any time a Spirit of illusion. Oriental archaeology, at all events, is on the side of those who see in the Hebrew patriarchs real men of flesh and blood, and who hold that in the narratives of the Pentateuch we have historical records many of which go back to the age of the events they describe. Each fresh discovery made by the archaeologist yields fresh testimony to the truth of the Old Testament stories. Since the manuscript of the present work was ready for the press, two such discoveries have been made by Mr. Pinches, to whom oriental archaeology and Biblical research are already under such deep obligations, and it has been possible only to glance at them in the text

In 2063, archaeologists discovered a hermetically-sealed box containing a memoir, a birth certificate for a child named Mobius (father unknown), and a male chastity belt.

What if a fate worse than a catastrophic virus threatened our lives in the American monarchy founded by Benedict Arnold after he defeated George Washington's ragtag revolutionary army? Arnold referred to the then-British puppet nation as the Union of Royal American States.

In 2063, the ruler of the URAS was Queen Alyssa, whose family descended from Benedict's distant cousin, King Abraham I. Monarchs usually ascended to the throne by murdering a previous ruler. And so, Alyssa killed her father, who had inherited the throne from King Donald the Trump.

The new paranoid queen suffered from nightmares in which undocumented aliens from another planet breached King Donald's sky wall to usurp her throne and enslave her subjects.

In this comedic, sci-fi, time-traveling romp through history, the queen asks a young scientist, Tamar Weaver, to travel into the past and repair the fabric of time so that Alyssa's reign could continue unhindered.

During Tamar's 1863 adventure in the royal capital of New York City, she experiences events that she believes caused the rip in time.

Changing fate is not so simple for Tamar. She encounters historical figures in non-whitewashed situations, never before documented in history books. Traveling into the past causes Tamar to become 17 years younger. Her journey becomes fraught with assassination, love and a transformed life as the mother of monarchs.

The mind-boggling plot concludes with an ending that the listener could never imagine; a conclusion that only could be imagined in the Twilight Zone.

Octateuch - The Original Orit【電子書籍】[ Scriptural Research Institute ]

In the mid 3?? century BC, King Ptolemy II Philadelphus of Egypt ordered a translation of the ancient Hebrew scriptures for the Library of Alexandria, which resulted in the creation of the Septuagint. The original version, published circa 250 BC, only included the Torah, or in Greek terms, the Pentateuch. The Torah is the five books traditionally credited to Moses, circa 1500 BC: Cosmic Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The first edition was followed by the second, around 225 BC which added the books of Joshua, Judges, and Ruth, which was later known as the Octateuch. This version of the Septuagint was later carried south into the Kingdom of Kush by the Jews fleeing Egypt in 200 BC when Judea was in revolt and the Ptolemys attempted to exterminate the Jews in Egypt. The Octateuch later became the Torah of the Beta Israel community in Sudan and Ethiopia known as the Orit.
A number of stories exist to explain the origin of the Beta Israel community, the 'Ethiopian Jews' indigenous to Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Sudan. The recorded story of the origin of the Ethiopian Jews was reported by Eldad ha-Dani in the late 800s AD. Eldad ha-Dani was a dark-skinned Jew from a country south of Kush, modern northern Sudan, who was captured by pagan Ethiopians, and ultimately sold on the coast of what might be modern Kenya or Tanzania, to a Jew from the Parthian Empire, who took him back to modern Iran. He later traveled through the Middle East and the Mediterranean Sea. He claimed that he was from a country of Jews, south of Kush, who were the descendants of the tribes of Dan, Gad, Naphtali, and Asher, who had left Israel during the civil war that split the Kingdom into Judea and Samaria. Modern secular scholars doubt there was a united kingdom of Israel, however, if the civil war did happen, it would have happened in 922 BC when Jeroboam I and Rehoboam split the kingdom of Solomon. If true, this would make the Ethiopian Jews neither Jews, nor Samaritans, but a third branch of the Judeo-Samaritan religions, and arguably, older than the others.
The Christian text Kebra Nagast claims that Judaism entered into Ethiopia slightly earlier when the Ethiopian Queen of Sheba traveled to Israel and was impregnated by King Solomon. Her son Menelik I led a group of Jews to Ethiopia when he stole the Ark of the Covenant. Other than the Ethiopian Orthodox Christians, few consider the Kebra Nagast historically valid. Some members of the Beta Israel community claim the Ethiopian Jews were originally members of the Jewish tribes led by Moses that chose not to enter into Canaan with Joshua, and instead traveled south and settled in the land of Moses' Ethiopian wife, mentioned in Numbers chapter 12. A third story of the origin of the Ethiopian Jews, took place shortly after the Greeks had taken control over Egypt and Judea, when King Ptolemy I resettled Judeans in southern Nubia. This would have taken place between 305 and 282 BC, and later the Jews migrated south for various reasons.
However they ended up in Ethiopia, they have traditionally used a variation of the Octateuch, which they call the Orit. The Octateuch is documented as being the version of the Septuagint that was published around 225 BC.
Blood and the Covenant tells the story of a mindsetthe conception of a personal covenant between God and manand the insidious consequences of this mindset. Author Pierre Parisien examines the history of covenantal belief and looks critically at two of its most troubling aspects: appropriation (the Promised Land) and moral dispensation (the belief that if you are doing it for God, then it is not a sin but a virtuous act). Parisien traces the historical consequences of the contract with God, from the campaigns of Joshua in Canaan to the present manifestations of ideological Zionism. He argues that the course of history has been, in great part, a consequence of the original Covenant, and he charts the regrettable lineage of atrocities committed under the auspices of covenant fulfillmentincluding the conquest of Canaan to the hegemony of Rome, the rape of Northern India by the Muslim Sultans, the Crusades, European colonialism (which considered the entire planet as the Promised Land), Manifest Destiny, and ideological Zionism. Wars, crimes against humanity, and genocide have too often been the aftermath of the Covenant. Will this woeful progression ever come to an end?
