Sherard Osborn ]

By the middle of the nineteenth century, the goal of the North-West Passage had claimed the lives of many explorers, yet the disappearance of the expedition led by Sir John Franklin occasioned the greatest response. Naval officer Sherard Osborn (1822?75) took part in the search mission of 1850?1 under Horatio Thomas Austin. Osborn was appointed to command the Pioneer, one of two steam tenders on the voyage. This was the first time such vessels had been deployed in the punishing conditions of the Arctic. Such was their success in cutting through ice and navigating the treacherous waters that similar models were later adopted by the whaling fleet. The present work, first published in 1852, gives a compelling account of the hardships of the expedition, which was successful in its surveying work and confirmed that Franklin had not been lost in Baffin Bay.

Minor fact - Of the 2 ships sailed in one was the "Resolute" - this was later made into 2 desks by Queen Victoria on in Buckingham Palace to this day and the other the Presidents desk in the United States in the oval office - mentioned in the movie "National Treasure 2"

Teachings and Commentary on the Sutra of Infinite Meanings is compiled from the teachings expounded during the seven-day Buddhist retreats in 1972 and 1973. Master Cheng Yen explained the sutra word by word, verse by verse, and complemented it with many analogies and real-life stories, connecting matters to principles. The book is organized as follows: The first volume includes the Preface, which describes the background of the teachings and Master Cheng Yen’s karmic affinity with the Sutra of Infinite Meanings, as well as her commentary on the first chapter of the sutra, “Chapter on Virtues.” The second volume includes the commentary on the second and third chapters of the sutra, “Chapter on Expounding the Dharma,” and “Chapter on the Ten Merits.” As for the last passage in the “Chapter on the Ten Merits,” “At this time, Great Magnificent Bodhisattva-Mahasattva and the eighty thousand bodhisattva-mahasattvas then rose from their seats” to, “At this time, all in the assembly rejoiced. They paid their respects to the Buddha and accepted and upheld the teachings as they departed,” the audio tape of Master Cheng Yen’s teaching on this section has been lost. Therefore, only the sutra passages have been kept without any additions.《無量義經講述》編纂依據一九七二年及一九七三年佛七開示《無量義經》?

“I’ll tell you everything I know. Though there might not be much to tell,” confesses the speaker in Strange Hymn by Carlene Kucharczyk, in a meticulously crafted lyrical journey exploring morality and humanity. The poems here grapple with understanding physical loss: “I wanted / to know at once and definitively our animal bodies / were not all we were. It is shameful to be this fragile.” They also engage with the more abstract slipping away of memory and time: “Since I was born, I have been forgetting. Forgetting what I have wanted to remember.” Kucharczyk’s insightful poems blur the lines between history and myth, love and grief, song and silence.

Caught between lamenting the passage of time and rejoicing in small beauties, she writes, “I tell you, I wish we could stay here longer / in this hotel of lost grandeur, this palace of interesting disarray, / and stay here with these pieces of the impersonal past / that have somehow not yet outlasted their small lights.” Each moment reflects on our ephemeral lives from musings on art and nature to reflections on the self, asking “Is a mirror a sort of glass house? / And, is there a way to see ourselves besides through the glass?”

As readers traverse this collection, they learn how the body sings, the many iterations of Mary, what sirens truly think of Odysseus, how a Morning Glory unfurls, and lessons in orthodontics, but most importantly, how to live with absence. Kucharczyk is a master of manipulating time and space through her dynamic use of form, creating a narrative that begs, “After I’m gone, don’t bury my bodyー / Burn it, and turn it into song.”

Musings of a Private Man【電子書籍】[ William A. Horstman ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Musings of a Private Man【電子書籍】[ William A. Horstman ]

The most important thing I learned about Bill was his experience with Carl Sagan’s book Contact. There is a story in this collection that Bill wrote called Contact. It’s not a finished piece, nor is it a very cohesive piece, but the experience he is trying to capture is one of the most fascinating and extraordinary events I have ever heard of, and it’s something I will never forget. As you’ll read, when Bill was about 30 years old, he was on a flight home from California, and he had the book Contact that he began reading on that flight. Early in the book a few things jump out to Bill. First, the location of the novel begins in a Wisconsin town near a lake, just like how Bill had grown up near Lake Michigan. Then we find out the main character has lost her father while she’s in grade school, in a sudden way, just as Bill had. But to confirm that this book, which Carl Sagan wrote in 1985, was indeed connected to Bill, was the passage that read his exact name. The sentence is: Billy Horstman, who sat next to her, gently reached out and placed his hand over hers. This book was created by Sally Riessen Hunt (Horstman), Brooke Laufer and Barbara Monier, who together lovingly gathered and organized Bill’s writings with the shared conviction that he was a wondrous man.

His exploration of how moments, once lost, can be fleetingly reclaimed through memory continues to resonate deeply with readers.

Published between 1913 and 1927, In Search of Lost Time remains a timeless meditation on human consciousness and the passage of time.

Do our words and reason cause life and death, and how can it be done? In fairness to all humanity and cultures. I always wondered if there is anything more to our lives than what we believe is living. Did I know that the Bible verses could be used to understand the real reason for our being? Looking at the whole picture ahead and beyond, My path in time turned in a specific direction. It wasn't planned for my future of material possessions. I wanted to save, travel, or maybe go into politics, as I grew up with parents having political conversations in the house. But we had to find the answer to life's most complex problems somewhere. But as a teenager, like most people my age, I went out and about with friends. One night, my life took a turn. I became a rape victim, which changed the course of my plans. Immensely, I was married at 16 for eight years, and the first child was born in 1962. Three followed, and I lost my late husband in 1970 by drowning. While raising four children alone, I wondered why they were created and what the reason was. I see friends and family all running around saying and doing the same things against each other, getting nowhere, and repeating the same mistakes against each other. As my wonder grew, I realised there had to be more to our lives than what we were experiencing. I heard a lot. We grew up hearing these wise old sayings. What was the reasoning behind them? That being said, there just had to be a purpose. With a lot of trial and error over the years and putting it all together, I found a way. The repetition of words in life will happen over the next generation. The same old things occur time after time and again in a generation if not corrected. The messages of wisdom and unspoken words came to me. I put the pieces together in my family tree and my mind. The more I mused, the more I thought there had to be a way. As said before, I probably repeat sentences in chapters, but that is okay for each time I improve or add more to the sentence. If one understands and has heard part of this book from family or relations, it is essential to write down the date, month, and day hours. Just keep a record of your time of knowledge as this puts one on a level; in our families, even though they didn't know one another, the wise wisdom of words still flew around and was spoken about in different family trees. This book shows a way to use our words in verses from the bible; as one can see when reading this book, it shows how we can use any word. In this book, explain what I've written and why I put pen to paper. I will discuss my theories, insight, vision, wonder since birth, nursery rhymes and old-time sayings, good and bad words, and other uses. And how every word shows our actions through life and has good meaning. We all got part of the bible verses coming down family trees. By putting pen to paper, I became aware of what passage we should follow and that there is more to our lives than growing up, getting married, having children retire, old age, and dying. I have repeated some chapters from my first two books in this book. LIFE MOST COMPLEX PROBLEMS, author Betsy boo, and LIFE BIGGEST JIGSAW PUZZLE. Author, Elizabeth Campbell. Cargill as each one leads into the following passage. Each one leads to the next one for improvement. This book, THOUGHT-SCAPE, will come under author Betsy boo. How enlightening this has come to me by checking words in bible verses is just so interesting. It heals the body This book outlined a few of the vital Parts from my first two books, Let Us Put Our War of Words to Good Use. Good or bad.

A dynamic and philosophical debut collection, Daniel Ruiz’s Reality Checkmate choreographs the endless wrestling match between lyrical sensibility and ontological principles taking place on the mind’s stage. These poems exquisitely demonstrate that phenomena in the material world are rarely as simple as they seem and yet must continually confront the universe’s countermoveーthe constraints of life itself, the knowledge that all we truly have is the present moment and the face value of our perceptions. He succinctly summarizes the history of art as cultural capitalー“all of us are / eternally punished with proving / literature is about literature after all”ーwhile revealing the redundancies and blind spots of intellectualismー“Meanwhile, a lost sheep / finds grass to eat anywhere it wants, / and does not mind, / like Lorca, letting its hair grow long.” While Reality Checkmate delights in the cerebral mode, its celebration of relativity as well as the lush materiality of language yields equal imagery and musicality, upholding sensory experience and human relationships as existentially significant in the absence of absolute truths. In Ruiz’s astonishing first book, dawn is not morningーor rather, not merely morning. “Madrugada” rejects a navel-gazing discourse on sentimentality and the passage of days, commanding that “you for whom meaning / is the meaning of beauty, be gone.” We could spend our whole lives ideating a metaphysics of time and waste the wonder of sunlight right in front of us. “Meanwhile, / the clouds are proud of all of us. It’s 12:01. / A man dragged by a poodle says / Good morning. Everyone in the orchestra / stands up at once.”

The Lost Prince【電子書籍】[ Frances Hodgson Burnett ]

There are many dreary and dingy rows of ugly houses in certain parts of London, but there certainly could not be any row more ugly or dingier than Philibert Place. There were stories that it had once been more attractive, but that had been so long ago that no one remembered the time. It stood back in its gloomy, narrow strips of uncared-for, smoky gardens, whose broken iron railings were supposed to protect it from the surging traffic of a road which was always roaring with the rattle of busses, cabs, drays, and vans, and the passing of people who were shabbily dressed and looked as if they were either going to hard work or coming from it, or hurrying to see if they could find some of it to do to keep themselves from going hungry. The brick fronts of the houses were blackened with smoke, their windows were nearly all dirty and hung with dingy curtains, or had no curtains at all; the strips of ground, which had once been intended to grow flowers in, had been trodden down into bare earth in which even weeds had forgotten to grow. One of them was used as a stone-cutter's yard, and cheap monuments, crosses, and slates were set out for sale, bearing inscriptions beginning with "Sacred to the Memory of." Another had piles of old lumber in it, another exhibited second-hand furniture, chairs with unsteady legs, sofas with horsehair stuffing bulging out of holes in their covering, mirrors with blotches or cracks in them. The insides of the houses were as gloomy as the outside. They were all exactly alike. In each a dark entrance passage led to narrow stairs going up to bedrooms, and to narrow steps going down to a basement kitchen. The back bedroom looked out on small, sooty, flagged yards, where thin cats quarreled, or sat on the coping of the brick walls hoping that sometime they might feel the sun; the front rooms looked over the noisy road, and through their windows came the roar and rattle of it. It was shabby and cheerless on the brightest days, and on foggy or rainy ones it was the most forlorn place in London.

RUSSIA IN 1916 BY STEPHEN GRAHAM【電子書籍】[ STEPHEN GRAHAM ]

tephen Graham (1884 - 15 March 1975) was a British journalist, travel-writer, essayist and novelist. His best-known books recount his travels around pre-revolutionary Russia and his journey to Jerusalem with a group of Russian Christian pilgrims. Most of his works express his sympathy for the poor, for agricultural labourers and for tramps, and his distaste for industrialisation.
I Returned to Russia last summer, visited as many of my old friends there as I could, arranged for the publication of some of my books in the Russian language, and incidentally travelled a great deal and saw a great many sides of Russian contemporary life, talked also with all manner of Russians. I travelled to Bergen in Norway, from Bergen obtained a passage round the North Cape to Vard?, the last port of Norway, transhipped there to a Russian boat and sailed for Ekaterina, the first port in Russia in the North, the new Russian harbour which never freezes. From Ekaterina I went on to Archangel, where I stayed a week, and from Archangel went to Moscow. I visited some estates in Central Russia and stayed with various acquaintances and friends, visited Rostof-on-the-Don, the Caucasus, Orel, Petrograd, and finally came back to England on a returning ammunition ship. In going to Russia I certainly did not intend to publish my impressions in book form, but I have been asked to do so, and I recognise the value of keeping in contact with our Ally from day to day. The requirement of the moment seems to be not so much books on Russia, of which there are now a great many, but diaries or volumes of impressions, keeping the peoples of the two countries in touch during the war. I returned to London at the beginning of October, 1916, and I should be glad to think that some one returning at the beginning of January, 1917, would follow on with another small volume of this type. Again for April, 1917. We need such volumes of personal impressions, and there would not be the need to apologise for them. They are letters between friends both engaged in the same vital task. It is extremely difficult to keep in touch with Russia by reading newspapers only. The newspapers are, on the whole, difficult to follow. They are concerned with the news-aspect of events and the scope for sensational appeals. Good quiet correspondence tends to be lost in them. Hence my little book of the hour. I was in Russia when the war broke out in 1914. I spent 1915 in Egypt, the Balkans, Russia and England, and again I spent the summer of 1916 in Russia. I have, therefore, been in touch with the Russians all the time of the war. I hope, therefore, that in this time when deeds rather than words are necessary, my report of the conditions prevailing in the land of our ally Russia may be considered serviceable Stephen Graham. When Breath Was Drink For Ghosts【電子書籍】[ Peter Strayer ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】When Breath Was Drink For Ghosts【電子書籍】[ Peter Strayer ]

When Breath Was Drink for Ghosts is a meditation on love, loss, faith, and the aching beauty of life. In this collection of 200 poems, poet Peter Strayer offers a voice both intimate and expansive, weaving together deeply personal experiences with universal themes that transcend time and place. His poetry moves like memoryーsometimes sharp and immediate, sometimes blurred and elusiveーpulling the reader into a nonlinear yet profoundly structured journey, much like the human soul itself. At the heart of Strayer's work is a reckoning with pain and the longing for redemption. For example, in his poem 'Soliloquy Three (Sonnet 84)', he crafts a haunting portrait of regret and the irreversible consequences of choice. Through vivid imageryーbruises that never quite heal, blood that drips onto spoken viewsーStrayer captures the agony of lost dreams and the slow, often futile search for solace. His poetry does not shy away from suffering but faces it with an honesty that is both bracing and compassionate. And yet, this collection is not merely an elegy to pain. Strayer's work, while steeped in grief, carries the promise of renewal within it. His words stretch toward beauty, toward transcendence, toward the quiet moments that sustain us. There are pastoral poems that celebrate the rhythms of nature and human existenceーpoems that remind us of the simple joys of wind over fields, the hush of morning, and the sacred ordinary. Some love poems, tender and unguarded, speak to the fragility and strength of the human heart. Some spiritual poems wrestle with doubt and belief, with the tension between silence and revelation. Strayer's poetry is both accessible and deeply layered, drawing from classical, philosophical, and spiritual traditions while remaining rooted in the immediacy of the modern world. He writes with a timeless quality, yet his work speaks directly to the wounds of our ageーthe fragmentation, the longing for meaning, and the need for poetry as both refuge and reckoning. As fellow poet Jonathan Jackson writes in his endorsement, "When Breath Was Drink for Ghosts arrives at a time when the world is in desperate need of poetry's healing balm." More than just a collection of verse, this book is an invitationーto pause, reflect, and feel. Each poem asks the reader to step into a space of quiet contemplation, listen to the echoes of their longing, and perhaps find something of themselves in Strayer's carefully chosen words. Whether exploring the depths of sorrow or celebrating the fleeting brilliance of joy, *When Breath Was Drink for Ghosts* lingers in the mind and heart long after the final page is turned. It is not just a bookーit is an experience, a mirror, a testament to the beauty and burden of being alive. When Breath Was Drink for Ghosts is a book for those who seek depth in language and meaning. It will resonate with readers who find solace in poetry that does not flinch from the realities of pain, yet still reaches for beauty. Lovers of classic and contemporary verse alike will appreciate Strayer's blend of accessibility and complexity, his ability to weave the personal with the universal. Those drawn to the works of Rainer Maria Rilke, T.S. Eliot, or Gerard Manley Hopkins will find a kindred spirit in these pages. Likewise, readers with a contemplative natureーthose who wrestle with questions of faith, loss, and the passage of timeーwill discover in this collection a voice that speaks to their own inner journey. Whether for the seasoned poetry reader or someone simply seeking words that resonate in a noisy world, *When Breath Was Drink for Ghosts* offers a space to linger, reflect, and remember what it means to feel deeply.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Strong Inside Perry Wallace and the Collision of Race and Sports in the South【電子書籍】[ Andrew Maraniss ]

New York Times Best Seller
2015 RFK Book Awards Special Recognition
2015 Lillian Smith Book Award
2015 AAUP Books Committee "Outstanding" Title

When Strong Inside was first published ten years ago, no one could have predicted the impact the book would have on Vanderbilt University, Nashville, and communities across the nation. What began as a biography of Perry Wallaceーthe first African American basketball player in the Southeastern Conference (SEC)ーbecame a catalyst for meaningful change and reconciliation between Wallace and the city that had rejected him. In this tenth-anniversary edition, scholars of race and sports Louis Moore and Derrick E. White provide a new foreword that places the story in the context of the study of sports and society, and author Andrew Maraniss adds a concluding chapter filling readers in on how events unfolded between Strong Inside’s publication in 2014 and Perry Wallace’s death in 2017 and exploring Wallace’s continuing legacy.

Wallace entered kindergarten the year that Brown v. Board of Education upended “separate but equal.” As a twelve-year-old, he sneaked downtown to watch the sit-ins at Nashville’s lunch counters. A week after Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, Wallace entered high school, and later saw the passage of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts. On March 19, 1966, his Pearl High School basketball team won Tennessee’s first integrated state tournamentーthe same day Adolph Rupp’s all-white Kentucky Wildcats lost to the all-Black Texas Western Miners in an iconic NCAA title game.

The world seemed to be opening up at just the right time, and when Vanderbilt recruited him, Wallace courageously accepted the assignment to desegregate the SEC. His experiences on campus and in the hostile gymnasiums of the Deep South turned out to be nothing like he ever imagined.

It works by letting you read this book in its original English form, while A1 words are translated to Spanish.
The translated Spanish words are in bold. English translations for all Spanish translations are placed at the end of the paragraphs.
The A1 words entail the 1-500 most common words in Spanish.

About the 30 books:

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
Young Alice, bored during a languid afternoon, follows a peculiar White Rabbit down a rabbit hole, plunging into a whimsical and illogical realm. In Wonderland, she encounters a host of eccentric characters, including the grinning Cheshire Cat, the madcap Mad Hatter, and the tyrannical Queen of Hearts. Each episode challenges her perceptions and often defies logic, blending playful wordplay with surreal scenarios. As Alice navigates this dreamlike landscape, she grapples with questions of identity and maturity. The tale is a rich tapestry of fantasy, satire, and the absurdities of adult conventions viewed through a child's eyes.

Peter Pan by James Matthew Barrie
Wendy Darling and her brothers are whisked away from their London nursery by the mischievous Peter Pan to the enchanted Neverland. There, they encounter the Lost Boys, mermaids, and the nefarious Captain Hook and his band of pirates. Adventures abound, from battling pirates to exploring mysterious lagoons. While Neverland offers eternal youth and freedom, the Darlings grapple with feelings of homesickness and the allure of growing up. Peter, resistant to adulthood, embodies the joys and pitfalls of eternal childhood. The tale balances whimsy with deeper reflections on innocence, responsibility, and the passage of time.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
Dr. Henry Jekyll, a respected scientist, grapples with the duality of human nature. Through experimental concoctions, he manages to separate his darker impulses, manifesting them as the malevolent Edward Hyde. Initially reveling in the freedom from moral constraints, Jekyll soon finds Hyde's actions spiraling out of control. The boundary between the two personas blurs, leading to catastrophic consequences. The narrative, told through the eyes of Jekyll's lawyer, Gabriel John Utterson, unravels the mystery behind the connection between Jekyll and Hyde. The novella explores themes of identity, morality, and the inherent dualism within humans.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly and cold-hearted man, despises the festive cheer of Christmas. On Christmas Eve, he's visited by the ghost of his former partner, Jacob Marley, who warns him of impending doom if he doesn't change his ways. Subsequently, three spiritsーthe Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Comeーguide Scrooge through visions of his own life, the hardships of those around him, and the grim future awaiting him. Confronted with the consequences of his indifference, Scrooge undergoes a profound transformation. The story emphasizes redemption, the spirit of giving, and the importance of compassion.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Lyman Frank Baum
Dorothy Gale, a young girl from Kansas, is whisked away by a cyclone to the magical Land of Oz. Desperate to return home, she journeys to the Emerald City to seek the aid of the Wizard. Along the way, she befriends the Scarecrow seeking brains, the Tin Woodman desiring a heart, and the Cowardly Lion in search of courage. Together, they face various trials, from battling malevolent witches to navigating treacherous landscapes. Their quest becomes a journey of self-discovery, revealing that what they sought was within them all along. The story intertwines adventure with lessons on friendship, bravery, and self-belief.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Complete by Mark Twain
Tom Sawyer, a mischievous and imaginative boy living along the Mississippi River, continually seeks adventure and escape from the mundanity of small-town life. From persuading friends to whitewash a fence to witnessing a graveyard murder with his friend Huck Finn, Tom's escapades are both lighthearted and perilous. His infatuation with Becky Thatcher leads to both romantic gestures and juvenile misunderstandings. The climax sees Tom and Becky lost in a cave, confronting real danger. Through Tom's eyes, the novel captures the spirit of childhood, the allure of freedom, and the moral lessons that come with growing up.

Frankenstein; Or, The Modern Prometheus by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
Victor Frankenstein, a passionate young scientist, becomes obsessed with unraveling the secrets of life and death. Through unorthodox experiments, he succeeds in animating a being crafted from reclaimed body parts. However, horrified by his creation's grotesque appearance, Victor abandons the creature, leading it to experience rejection and isolation. Yearning for companionship but met with fear and hostility, the creature's loneliness turns to vengeance against its creator. The ensuing cat-and-mouse chase delves deep into themes of ambition, responsibility, and the consequences of playing god. The novel serves as a cautionary tale about unchecked ambition and the ethical boundaries of science.

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
Dorian Gray, a young man of extraordinary beauty, becomes the muse of painter Basil Hallward. Influenced by the hedonistic Lord Henry Wotton, Dorian wishes that his portrait would bear the marks of age and sin, allowing him eternal youth. This wish mysteriously comes true, leading Dorian down a path of indulgence, moral corruption, and decadence, all while his visage remains untouched. Meanwhile, the portrait hidden away reflects the degradation of his soul. As years pass, the weight of his actions and the grotesque transformation of the painting haunt him. The narrative delves into themes of vanity, morality, and the duality of human nature.

A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle
Dr. John Watson, recently returned from the Afghan War, seeks lodging in London and is introduced to the enigmatic Sherlock Holmes. Soon, they are drawn into a perplexing murder case: a man found dead in an abandoned house with no apparent wounds, but with the word "RACHE" scrawled on the wall. As Holmes employs his deductive prowess, the narrative shifts to the American West, revealing a backstory of love, betrayal, and vengeance rooted in the Mormon community. The novel intricately weaves these disparate threads, culminating in the unmasking of the perpetrator. This debut of Holmes and Watson sets the stage for their enduring partnership.

Cranford by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell
In the quaint English town of Cranford, the social fabric is predominantly woven by the genteel but modestly situated women. Through a series of vignettes, the novel portrays their daily lives, marked by tea parties, fashion, and the subtle etiquettes of Victorian society. The arrival of outsiders and unexpected events challenge their established norms, leading to both comedic and poignant moments. Amidst the simplicity, themes of resilience, compassion, and the strength of community emerge. The narrative offers a charming glimpse into the rhythms of small-town life and the enduring bonds of friendship.

Notes from the Underground by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Presented as a confessional monologue, the narrative delves into the mind of an unnamed, introspective man living in St. Petersburg. Disillusioned with society and consumed by spite, he grapples with feelings of inferiority and existential angst. His musings challenge the notions of rationality, free will, and the human propensity for self-destruction. The second part recounts episodes from his past, highlighting his attempts to interact with others, which often culminate in humiliation and self-sabotage. Through this introspection, Dostoyevsky examines the complexities of the human psyche and the contradictions inherent in human nature.

Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
Set in the city of Verona, two young lovers from feuding families, the Montagues and the Capulets, fall deeply in love at first sight. Defying their families' long-standing enmity, Romeo and Juliet secretly marry with the help of Friar Laurence. As tensions between their kin escalate, a series of tragic misunderstandings and hasty decisions ensue. Their clandestine love becomes a catalyst for both passion and tragedy. Ultimately, their story highlights the destructive nature of feuds and the purity of young love.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
This collection features twelve intriguing cases tackled by the astute detective Sherlock Holmes and his loyal companion, Dr. John Watson. From unraveling the mysteries of "The Speckled Band" to deciphering the enigmatic "Scandal in Bohemia," Holmes employs his unparalleled powers of observation and deduction. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Resolute John Franklin's Lost Expedition and the Discovery of the Queen's Ghost Ship【電子書籍】[ Martin W. Sandler ]

Few know that the president’s desk in the Oval Office plays a part in one of the world’s most extraordinary sagas; in Resolute, noted historian Martin Sandler brings the story to light.

After Sir John Franklin and his ships disappeared in the Arctic while seeking the Northwest Passage, 39 rescue missions were launched, including one by the Resolute, the Royal Navy’s finest vessel. In 1854, it became locked in the ice and was abandoned. A year later, a Connecticut whaling ship discovered it drifting 1,200 miles away, a 600-ton ghost ship. The whalers boarded the Resolute and steered it through a ferocious hurricane back to Connecticut. The US government re-outfitted the ship and returned it to Queen Victoria, who, in 1879, had its best timbers made into a desk for President Rutherford B. Hayesーa desk still in use today. Rare photographs, paintings, engravings, and maps illustrate the book throughout. This edition is updated with a new chapter on the discovery of Franklin’s ships, the HMS Erebus and the HMS Terror, in 2014 and 2016 in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.

This legendary maritime epic is perfect for fans of David Grann’s The Wager and Hampton Sides’s The Wide Wide Sea.

After a loss, a year in the country: four seasons to transform a garden and a self.

'In the city the notion of the hours of the day, of the passage of time, is lost. In the countryside that is impossible,' our narrator tells us. In this remote house and garden, time is almost palpable; it goes by without haste and brings into sharp relief even the tiniest details: insects, the sound of the rain, a falling leaf, the smell of damp earth. Past and present are equally weighted and visible here, revealing themselves slowly with every season and turn of the spade. So a year unfolds. A garden takes shape as his connection deepens to this place, becoming a shelter from everyone and everything, perhaps even from himself. We see the ants devouring the chard, we hear the tales his grandmother told, perhaps real, perhaps taken from a movie, and we learn about his great love, Ciro. The humid sheets in the country, the carefully renovated apartment in the city and the painful, inexplicable break-up that prompted him to take refuge in this patch of now-carefully tended land.

The White Light of Tomorrow【電子書籍】[ Russell Thornton ]

A masterful new collection from award-winning poet Russell Thornton.

With intense lyricism, Thornton records his imaginative movement between the element of water, waking to “the aloneness of water,” and the phenomenon of light, comprehending “light” as “fate” and “love” as “memory of light.” In the process, Thornton highlights how hard lives can manifest beauty and affirmation. A mother transcends degrading circumstances through laughter. A long-lost father’s drafting set case is a “coffin,” its tools a “skeleton;” his “ashes are buried” in the poet’s “arm.”

Revelations of nature abound. Thornton’s rainy locale lifts onto the mythical level, water “wrapping around” him, “holding” him “complete / as within womb water about to break.” Herons’ wings “span the countless characters” of a creek.” A description of an ancient BC site is a rapt engagement with Indigenous petroglyphs. An exploration of a Song of Songs passage details “light … one with turns of the yarn” of a shawl, “a touch within a touch.” Classical myth informs a poem about a power outage; the speaker enters “the elsewhere of the night” to build a fire.

Passionate and moving, this collection marks a fine advance in Thornton’s expanding poetic output.
