Fleeting Images from a Bloodied Past【電子書籍】[ Bernard Fredericks ]

Ships against the sea! Was…STILL IS, a threat to all the vessels who sail upon her, and especially so, an ever-present threat to the crews who do their duty and put their lives in harm's way. Of violent storms, tempests… All the unpredictable hell of crosswinds, headwinds and tailwinds, roaring madly like some frenzied monster, changing direction, attempting to plunge the man-made object under the vengeful, towering and swamping thunderous waves, against which so many hardy ships have foundered, perished and been lost. The fact that the CSS Alabama came through such a storm and survived this maelstrom is testimony to the meticulous skills and concentrated painstaking patience and hard work of Laird's well-led and well-managed shipbuilding workforce and professional seamanship, that ensured the crew's safe passage and escape from this seaborne wretchedness. Warships, which survived incredible battle experience, and - at war's end - were reviewed for conversion, replacement or the breaker's yard was a consideration. Not all, however, because the fate of HMS Zealous continued in a new page of history, when she was transferred to the Israeli Navy. Later, in 1967, whilst out on patrol in the Eastern Mediterranean, she was suddenly attacked by Egyptian warships equipped with superior firepower. The new crew of this old warhorse knew that the fate of their emerging and vibrant new nation, fighting to retain her hard-fought existence, was dependent upon their spirited defence. Despite the fact that they were up against Soviet-supplied STYX surface-to-surface missiles, against which they had no defence, they steered into battle, undaunted. With battle pennants flying, they bravely challenged the enemy. Their fearlessness and courage shone in the face of certain destruction and ultimate sacrifice. The Cammell Laird scenario is riveting and strikingly dramatic…

A Pocketful of Passage【電子書籍】[ Loraine Campbell ]

A fictionalized account of the life of a lighthouse keeper's daughter and her family on the Great Lakes in the 1940s, written for young readers ages 8 and up.

A Pocketful of Passage is based on the memories of Annie Bowen Hoge, whose father was a lighthouse keeper on the Great Lakes for many years. Every summer until she was nine, Annie went with her brother, sister, and mother to live at Passage Island, where her father tended the signal that guided ships through an important shipping lane between Passage Island and Isle Royale in Lake Superior.

A Pocketful of Passage is told from the point of view of nine-year-old Annie, who loved living in the old, secluded lighthouse amid the breathtaking scenery of northern Michigan. Her surroundings provide a wonderland of places to play and explore. Annie's stories include boat trips to nearby Isle Royale ("the big island"), tales of mischief with visiting children, and a visit from the crew of a fishing boat lost in the lake. She also describes the day-to-day life of the lighthouse keepers, giving simple explanations about the purpose and the procedure of her father's job. Yet Annie's parents see beyond the adventures of Passage Island to recognize the danger for their young children, living isolated from doctors, stores, churches, and schools. When they tell Annie that this will be their final summer at Passage Island, her stories take on a new significance.

Loraine Campbell has combined Annie's recollections with extensive research about lighthouse keeping to present an informative and enjoyable account of Michigan history for young readers. Maps are also included to illustrate the locations mentioned in the book.

Nina Charan, a junior doctor, takes charge during the resuscitation of an elderly man. It is her moment of glory. He dies four weeks later, due to the negligence of a locum.

She moves on, and three years later is inspired by Peter Owens, her new registrar. He becomes her mentor. William Waybridge, a cancer patient, dies after his bowel is perforated during a procedure. The X-ray that might have led to an early diagnosis is delayed, fatally; the request form was lost.

Nina investigates but cannot identify the culprit. Peter and Nina take over the care of a 19 year old man, Jason, who has been sick since the age of 9 and who now requires a bowel transplant. Peter is promoted to consultant, and takes charge of Jason’s case. When pressed, Jason admits that he is tired of fighting his illness; he submitted to surgery at the time of his last crisis only to spare his mother, Deborah, the pain of grief.
‘Next time,’ he says, ‘let me die’.

A new doctor, Diana, arrives from Jamaica. She begins to suspect that Peter is biased in his treatment of the elderly, and quietly accumulates data to prove this. Nina is asked by a dying Professor of Medicine to put him out of his misery by prescribing an overdose of morphine; Nina refuses but is affected by the emotional and intellectual force of his argument ? only those who are close to the suffering can truly decide if assisted suicide is justified.

Before he dies, of natural causes, he begs Nina to open her mind to the possibility of physician-assisted death. She is swayed. Peter then reveals to Nina that he and the professor formed the nucleus of a network of doctors who advocate assisted suicide and euthanasia. Only the best doctors are chosen to join this network, and Nina impressed the professor. Before dying he instructed to Peter to induct her. Peter shows Nina the missing x-ray request form ? he removed it ? it is a symbol of his trust, and hope, in her. Better that William Waybridge died without surgery, it would have extended and complicated the passage of his inevitable death. By degrees Peter educates Nina in methods of killing that leave little or no trace ? errors, oversights…

Diana is put on ‘gardening leave’ just two days before she is due to present her incriminating data ? the reason, allowing a religious reference to slip into a discussion with a patient’s relatives. Diana wears a crucifix, and is not embarrassed to display her Christianity. Jason deteriorates, but his progress onto the transplant waiting list is hindered. Diana confronts Nina, fearing that her colleague has become blind to Peter’s unethical practise. Jason confides to Nina that he has changed his mind ? he now wants to fight to the end. Peter tells Nina that Jason has refused transplantation. Nina notices some irregularities on Jason’s drug chart. Could he really be planning to kill Jason ? one so young?

She deduces that Peter worked as a locum in the hospital where she began her career, in Bristol. Nina reconnects with her prior commitment, to save life, not end it.
Nina confronts Peter. He threatens her, referring to a dossier of medical errors that can be attributed to her. She accuses him of megalomania, of manufacturing the idea of a ‘network’ to rationalise his actions. Jason dies, without a transplant. His mother is grateful to the team. He had had enough, she could tell.

Peter attends a national conference. He is surprised to see Diana arrive at the podium. She presents her data, anonymised but transparent. All eyes turn to Peter. He is not seen again. As the novel ends, Nina learns that the network probably does exist, but even now she remains ambivalent. Peter is in exile. Nina moves on, and shares her knowledge with no-one.

My Dwelling Place Reading Scripture Through The Lens Of God’s Desire To Dwell Among Us【電子書籍】[ Deborah L Roeger ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】My Dwelling Place Reading Scripture Through The Lens Of God’s Desire To Dwell Among Us【電子書籍】[ Deborah L Roeger ]

The concept of God’s presence is deeply embedded in Christian teaching from God’s presence in the Garden of Eden, through the hope of God’s presence in the New Earth. But what does it that mean?

Many Christians find it difficult to explain what is meant by God’s presence. We hear of God being especially present in a worship service, or of specific places where God’s presence is expected by the pilgrims who travel there. We know that God’s presence was somehow in the tabernacle, and will be part of the new earth when Jesus returns. It is also taught that God is omnipresent, that is, present everywhere and always.,/p>

But what is God’s presence? What does it take for Him to dwell among His people and why does it matter?

In this third volume under the Lost in Translation imprint, Deborah Roeger applies her in-depth and detailed yet extremely practical approach to Bible study to look at God’s presence in its many forms and manifestations from the creation to the restoration of God’s creation. As she traces God’s dwelling presence through the pages of Scripture she looks thoughtfully at what God requires of us so He can be present among us.

In the process, she provides a thematic look at the whole of scripture that can be used as a guide to study other topics with full attention to the overall context of the story we find in Scripture. It is the story of God, who created for His glory and longs for the restoration of His dwelling presence among His creation. This understanding of the broad context will help you put other events in their proper place in the history of God’s plan of salvation.

My Dwelling Place is not just an explanation of biblical terms. It is first of all an explanation of what it takes for God to come and dwell among us. It is then a call to take up our mission and the gifts God has given us and to learn to practice His presence at all times.

As in each volume in this series, there is a valuable added resource in the appendix discussing how to do word studies and how to use both available tools for Bible study and to take the context of each passage seriously when doing so.

This study can be read individually, but it is especially valuable as a resource for small group study or for a transforming church-wide study.

The Lost Prince【電子書籍】[ Frances Hodgson Burnett ]

There are many dreary and dingy rows of ugly houses in certain parts of London, but there certainly could not be any row more ugly or dingier than Philibert Place. There were stories that it had once been more attractive, but that had been so long ago that no one remembered the time. It stood back in its gloomy, narrow strips of uncared-for, smoky gardens, whose broken iron railings were supposed to protect it from the surging traffic of a road which was always roaring with the rattle of busses, cabs, drays, and vans, and the passing of people who were shabbily dressed and looked as if they were either going to hard work or coming from it, or hurrying to see if they could find some of it to do to keep themselves from going hungry. The brick fronts of the houses were blackened with smoke, their windows were nearly all dirty and hung with dingy curtains, or had no curtains at all; the strips of ground, which had once been intended to grow flowers in, had been trodden down into bare earth in which even weeds had forgotten to grow. One of them was used as a stone-cutter's yard, and cheap monuments, crosses, and slates were set out for sale, bearing inscriptions beginning with "Sacred to the Memory of." another had piles of old lumber in it, another exhibited second-hand furniture, chairs with unsteady legs, sofas with horsehair stuffing bulging out of holes in their covering, mirrors with blotches or cracks in them. The insides of the houses were as gloomy as the outside. They were all exactly alike. In each a dark entrance passage led to narrow stairs going up to bedrooms, and to narrow steps going down to a basement kitchen. The back bedroom looked out on small, sooty, flagged yards, where thin cats quarreled, or sat on the coping of the brick walls hoping that sometime they might feel the sun; the front rooms looked over the noisy road, and through their windows came the roar and rattle of it. It was shabby and cheerless on the brightest days, and on foggy or rainy ones it was the most forlorn place in London.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Virgil and Lucretius: Passages Translated by William Stebbing【電子書籍】[ William Stebbing ]

This is the tale old Proteus by the sea Erst told of Orpheus and Eurydice. Virgil at Parthenope overheard, And has resung it, if not word by word. Orpheus had been espoused but one short hour, And went to gather roses for the bower, When a rejected wooer, mad with love, Sprang upon the light-footed nymph, and strove For an embrace; she, heeding nought, alas! Trod on a serpent sleeping in the grass; And when on the instant, answering her cries, Her Bridegroom knelt there, kissing her closed eyes, Half fainting with the sense of all her charms, Sudden he woke, a dead Bride in his arms! Not his alone the woe and misery; Nor he sole mourner for Eurydice; From Rhodope to Pang?a’s peaks, above The cave where Boreas hid his Attic love, Through the fierce realm of Rhesus, echo bore The wail to the wild Getes, to the shore Of Hebrus, while in forest, hill, and dale The tuneful Dryads told the tearful tale. But how conjure by the best ordered show Of grief an irremediable woe! Orpheus fled Pity, and neighbourly Care; All human fellowship but his despair. With but that and his lyre communion still He held, from dawn to sunset, then until The planets rose and sank, banishing sleep, Keeping sad vigils by the moaning deep, Thinking each shadow on the desert shore Was his lost Bride restored to life once more.

Importance of Patience and Prayer【電子書籍】[ Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Importance of Patience and Prayer【電子書籍】[ Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei ]

Without patience truth and steadfast logic of exalted school of religion wouldnt have been understood. Divine learning of Islam, which blessed humanity, would have lost its color with the passage of time. Ultimate hope of victory of truth over falsehood, which provides life-giving fresh blood for the powerful hands and steadfast steps of believers, would have been silenced forever. Without patience existence of Monotheism, prophet-hood, and prophetic mission would havent been possible and produced any fruits. Rights of deprived people couldnt have been obtained from the tyrants. Also, prayers, fasting, and other deeds would have lost their meanings. During his limited span of life in this world, a human being between his birth and death is a traveler on the road towards final destination. He has been fundamentally created to endeavor as much as possible to bring himself close to final destination. The primary aim of divine religions and great prophets was to build an Islamic society providing a suitable field in which human beings could travel, ultimately reaching their desired goal. *** The present book contains a detailed commentary about the philosophy of daily ritual prayer in Islam. The writer describes Prayer of Islam like a siren for awakening us; a warning at different hours of day and night which provides a program for human beings, requiring their commitment for its execution. Thus, it bestows meanings to spent days and nights and makes them accountable for passing moments. Prayer of Islam by inspiration and repetition of Gods remembrance connects limited vulnerable human beings to infinite and absolute source of power and thus, makes him rely upon that supreme source. Therefore, a believer or a society of believers through establishing prayer burns the roots of deviations, sins, corruptions within themselves and their social environments; as well as at the same time neutralizes completely all kind of sinful thoughts and internal and external motives of wickedness be individual or collective, whatsoever. Certainly prayer protects individual as well as a society from all sorts of undesirable and shameful acts.

American Legends The Life of George Washington【

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】American Legends The Life of George Washington【電子書籍】

A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history’s most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors’ American Legends series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of America’s most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.

Every American is taught a pristine narrative of the life and legacy of George Washington and can easily recite the highlights of the “Father of Our Country”. The remarkable Virginian led an under-resourced rag-tag army to ultimate victory in the American Revolution before becoming the nation’s first president, setting it on its path toward superpower status. He may not have actually chopped down a cherry tree or tossed a silver dollar across the Potomac, but his contemporaries considered his character above reproach. When Washington voluntary resigned as commander of the armies, he stunned the world. Everyone in the colonies and the world realized that Washington, at the head of the last army standing in the colonies, could have made himself king of the new United States on the spot, and it would have been a move supported by his rank and file soldiers. Instead, Washington became the first Westerner to voluntarily demobilize his army, ensuring civilian control of the new nation. King George III called Washington "the greatest character of the age" for making that decision.

As President from 1788-1796, Washington set every precedent for the executive branch of the new government, from forming a “Cabinet” to limiting himself to two terms. He even set precedents with his farewell address, which helped guide the policies of subsequent presidents.

Washington did more than any other man to ensure the success of the American Revolution and the safe passage of the new United States from fledgling nation to budding power, but what actually made the man tick? Underneath his steel surface burned an almost insatiable political ambition, and a man who was acutely self-conscious of himself. In addition to highlighting his life and legacy, American Legends: The Life of George Washington humanizes the leader who is now remembered more like a flawless demigod than a man. Along with pictures of the Father of Our Country and other important people and events in his life, you will learn about Washington like you never have before, in no time at all.

Legendary Commanders Who Challenged Ancient Rome The Lives and Legacies of Hannibal, Spartacus, and Attila the Hun【

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Legendary Commanders Who Challenged Ancient Rome The Lives and Legacies of Hannibal, Spartacus, and Attila the Hun【電子書籍】

In the history of war, only a select few men always make the list of greatest generals. Napoleon. Caesar. Alexander. They are always joined by Hannibal, who has the distinction of being the only man who nearly brought Rome to its knees before its decline almost 700 years later. Rome never suffered a more horrifying defeat in its history than at Cannae, and indeed, Hannibal nearly rewrote the course of Western history during the Second Punic War. Even today there remains great debate on just how he accomplished his masterful invasion of Italy across the Alps. Since his army included war elephants, historians still argue over exactly where and how he crossed over 2,000 years after he managed that incredible feat.

Hannibal will always be listed among history’s greatest generals, and his military campaign in Italy during the Second Punic War will always be studied, but part of the aura and mystique surrounding the Carthaginian legend is that there is still a lot of mystery. Since Carthage was destroyed by Rome a generation after Hannibal, most of what is known about Hannibal came from the very people he tormented in the late 2nd century B.C., and thus much of his background and life story is unknown. Moreover, while military historians are still amazed that he was able to maintain his army in Italy near Rome for nearly 15 years, scholars are still puzzled over some of his decisions, including why he never attempted to march on Rome in the first place.

Spartacus is the world’s most famous slave, and one of the most notorious figures of Ancient Rome. A slave enamored of freedom and willing to fight and die for it, he became especially popular in the years following the Enlightenment, after which he was widely viewed as a poignant champion of liberty in the 18th and 19th centuries. As a result, he became a symbol during struggles like the French Revolution, the American Revolution, the American Civil War and the struggle for emancipation.

Today, his dual life as a gladiator and a “freedom fighter” makes him fascinating to audiences around the world. His tale, a blend of violent spectacle and civil rights, has been adapted for film (Stanley Kubrick’s memorable Spartacus), television (Starz’s popular television series), and in literature (appearing in everything from historical novels to comics). To this day, Spartacus (Spartaco) is a popular first name in central and southern Italy, and his name has been adopted by sports teams like FC Spartak Moscow and FC Spartak Plovdiv. The Soviet Union’s internal version of the Olympics, the Spartakiad, also derived its name from Spartacus.

Attila, Emperor of the Hunnic Empire and thus most commonly known as Attila the Hun, is an idiosyncratic figure who has become more myth than man, not least because much of his life is shrouded in mystery. Perhaps the most famous “barbarian” in history, Attila was the lord of a vast empire spanning two continents, but he is best remembered for what he did not conquer. Though he seemingly had Rome at his mercy in 452, he ultimately decided not to sack the Eternal City, and a year later he had suffered a mysterious death.

What is known about Attila came mostly from Priscus, a guest of his court who wrote several books about Attila’s life in Greek. Unfortunately, much of that work was lost to history, but not before the ancient writer Jordanes relied on it to write his own overexaggerated account of Attila’s life. And like their leader, the Huns themselves are an instantly recognizable name with mysterious origins; most of what is known about the Huns came from Chinese sources thousands of miles and an entire continent away from Italy. Naturally, the dearth of information and the passage of time have allowed myths and legends to fill in the most important details of Attila’s life.

A man plans a final journey into the Western wilderness in this “wonderful” novel by the New York Times?bestselling author of Snow Falling on Cedars (The Miami Herald).

Mid-October is harvest time in the Columbia Basin of central Washington, a rich apple- and pear-growing region. Ben Givens, recently widowed, is a retired heart surgeon, once admired for his steadiness of hand, his precision, and his endurance. But now he has been diagnosed with terminal colon cancer. Ben has never been a man to readily accept defeatーbut he is determined to avoid suffering, and to avoid being a burden.

Accompanied by his two hunting dogs, he sets out on a trip, which he plans to end with an “accident.” Journeying into deserts, yawning canyons, dusty ranches, and vast orchards, however, he is unprepared for the persuasiveness of memory and the promise he made to his wife, Rachel, the love of his life, during World War II. Along the way Ben will meet some people who force him to think more about his worldviewーa young couple, a drifter, a veterinarian, a rancher, a migrant workerーand just when he thinks there is no turning back, nothing to lose that wasn’t lost, his power of intervention is called upon and his very identity tested.

“Wise and compassionate about the human predicament . . . A writer who delves into life’s moral complexities to arrive at existential truths.” ーPublishers Weekly

“Ben is deeply drawn and complexly sympathetic.” ーEntertainment Weekly

“Guterson draws compelling characters and creates a haunting sense of place and of humankind’s paradoxical relationship with the natural world; a passage describing a desperate encounter with a pack of Irish wolfhounds compares favorably with the best of Hemingway.” ーLibrary Journal

“Guterson possesses a remarkable gift for capturing people and places, etching them into the reader’s mind.” ーUSA Today

The End of the River【電子書籍】[ Simon Winchester ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The End of the River【電子書籍】[ Simon Winchester ]

When it comes to climate-change-inspired threats, it is rising sea levels we hear most about. But if the oceans are, as Herman Melville put it, “the tide-beating heart of the earth,” rivers are its circulatory system. In the United States, there is no river more storied, symbolic, and vital than the Mississippi, and none, to use Mark Twain’s word, more lawless. The struggle to control it has been going on nearly as long as there has been human civilization on its banks, and the attendant drama and dangers have been memorialized by many writers, among them Twain and, in his seminal 1987 New Yorker account, John McPhee. Now Simon Winchester, the consummate, critically acclaimed storyteller and bestselling author of Atlantic and The Professor and the Madman, turns his eye to what could well be the height of the battle, one increasingly doomed by man’s interference.

The most fateful instance of this interference was accomplished by an inventor and steamboat captain, Henry Miller Shreve, in the nineteenth century. In vivid detail, Winchester re-creates the smashing and digging and the great man- and steam power that Shreve wielded to clear the river of snags and logjams and, in order to shorten the passage to New Orleans, carve an entirely new channel for it. What no one foresaw was that his celebrated shortcut, Shreve’s Cut, would form a sloping chute to an adjacent river, the Atchafalaya, and, aided by gravity and shifting weather patterns, increasingly tempt the waters of the Mississippi in its direction. Resisting this trend with ever more ingenious methods (and ever more expense) began just after, first with a system of levees, then with added spillways, and, finally, with the conception and construction of a floodgate system, the Old River Control Structure, still in place today. And the stakes are high: Ifーmany say whenーthe Atchafalaya captures the Mississippi’s stream, it will be the end of life as it’s currently known in the American South. The great cities of LouisianaーNew Orleans and Baton Rougeーwould be rendered fetid swamps; entire sections of the American infrastructure, from pipelines to electricity and water supply, would collapse. Homes would be displaced and livelihoods, if not lives, would be lost.

Deftly combining the hydrological and the historical, Winchester tours the challenges that upped the ante on the Mississippi River Commission’s duty to protect the watershed and its inhabitants: the upheavals that came in the form of the Great Flood of 1927, one of the most destructive natural disasters of all time, displacing more people than almost any event in American history, and the record-breaking inundations of 1937 and 1973. He pays tribute to the Army Corps of Engineers, for their Herculean efforts to keep the river on its current track, and to one civilian, Albert Einstein’s son Hans Albert Einstein, a hydraulic engineer and one of the main architects of the mighty control structure that continues to divide the Mississippi from the Atchafalaya. But how long can it hold in a time when extremes of weather are the norm, when storms come faster and more furiously, sending sediment-loaded water pounding against the floodgatesーevents that not only pit man against nature but, given that we cannot always agree which causes and correctives to pursue, man against man?

In this elegant synthesis of past and present, the exigencies of the natural world and the human, Winchester offers an engrossing cautionary tale that readers cannot afford to ignore. It is a call to arms that asks whether accepting defeatーletting nature take its courseーmay be the only way to win.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】From New Age To New Life A Passage from Darkness to the Light of Christ【電子書籍】[ Sandra Clifton ]

"Whether or not you believe that psychics are real is not the point of this book," writes Clifton. "Obviously there is ongoing appeal for such things, or God's Word would not keep warning against them. The point of my book is to show triumph over sin and darkness."
The former professional psychic, then known as Sandra McNeil, reveals the true nature of New Age thought and practices and how God opened her eyes to deception and set her free. She presents practical insight for tactful dialogue with individuals caught in the web of such beliefs, as well as tips for intercessory prayer. The inclusion of prayer strategies and discussion questions makes From New Age to New Life both theological and practical.
With great experience as an author and editor, as well as a doctorate of ministry from Oral Roberts University, Clifton does an excellent job of telling her story in five significant parts: "My Journey," "Reflections," "What Can Be Done?" "Prayer Strategies," and "Talking It Over." Like sharing snapshots from a trip, she also includes distinct scenes from her life. Each is followed by reflection, in which she looks back on her experiences or thoughts with theological and biblical perspectives. In the process, she addresses how to help lost people out of the occult and New Age.
Readers of this wonderfully written book will come away feeling warm inside knowing good still comes out on top.
