Popular Romances of the West of England (Complete)【電子書籍】[ Robert Hunt ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Popular Romances of the West of England (Complete)【電子書籍】[ Robert Hunt ]

THE beginning of this collection of Popular Romances may I be truly said to date from my early childhood. I remember with what anticipations of pleasure, sixty-eight years since, I stitched together a few sheets of paper, and carefully pasted them into the back of an old book. This was preparatory to a visit I was about to make with my mother to Bodmin, about which town many strange stories were told, and my purpose was to record them. My memory retains dim shadows of a wild tale of Hender the Huntsman of Lanhydrock; of a narrative of streams having been poisoned by the monks; and of a legend of a devil who. played many strange pranks with the tower which stands on a neighbouring hill. I have, within the last year? endeavoured to recover those stories, but in vain. The living people appear to have forgotten them; my juvenile note-book has long been lost those traditions are, it is to be feared, gone for ever. Fifteen years passed away--about six of them at school in Cornwall, and nine of them in close labour in London,--when failing health compelled my return to the West of England. Having spent about a month on the borders of Dartmoor, and wandered over that wild region of Granite Tors, gathering up its traditions,--ere yet Mrs Bray [a] had thought of doing so, -- I resolved on walking through Cornwall. Thirty-five years since, on a beautiful spring morning, I landed at Saltash, from the very ancient passage-boat which in those days conveyed men and women, carts-and cattle, across the river Tamar, where now that triumph of engineering, the Albert Bridge, gracefully spans its waters. Sending my box forward to Liskeard by a van, my wanderings commenced; my purpose being to visit each relic of Old Cornwall, and to gather up every existing tale of its ancient people. Ten months were delightfully spent in this way; and in that period a large number of the romances and superstitions which are published in these volumes were collected, with many more, which have been weeded out of the collection as worthless.

From Calcutta to Trinidad they went, the girmitiyas, crossing two oceans to reach their new homes on the other side of the world. jahajin illuminates for us the extraordinary experience of that jouney, the train ride from faizabad to calcutta, the passage down the hooghly. the three-month voyage around the stormy cape and up the Atlantic to Trinnidad, where the weary migrants settled into life as indentured labourers on the sugar estates. The novel opens with the narrator, a young linguist, talking to 110-year-old Deeda, who came to the caribbean on the same ship as her great great grandmother. Deeda speaks of leaving her village in basti with her son and sailing across the seas to "Chini-dad", the land of sugar, and about the life and friendships she built on her estate.Nested within this larger story is the dreamlike myth of Saranga, torn between her monkey-lover and her prince. Deeda's stories of a lost world captivate the younger woman, encouraging her to make the journey back across the kala pani. Alive with compelling characters and the lilt of Trinidad Bhojpuri, Jahajin gathers up the various narratives of relocation and transformation across a century in a tale that is part history and part fairy tale.

Eat the Flowers Poems for the youth inside us.【電子書籍】[ Robert E. Simpson ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Eat the Flowers Poems for the youth inside us.【電子書籍】[ Robert E. Simpson ]

These poems began fifty-one years ago when the author began to capture his feelings and life’s events. About thirty years ago he stopped writing and put them aside to pursue his career as an attorney.

Originally everything was handwritten ? often on scraps of paper stuffed into envelopes, book jackets, photo albums or some other convenient storage hole. Every so often, the browning paper and fading ink were revisited. Surprisingly, the scraps managed to survive despite the passage of time. Occasionally, a new poem was added to the collection or an old poem was revised. Bob thought it was inconceivable that anyone else would have the slightest interest in his feelings; so, each time, back into storage the poetry went. With each return to their cubbyholes the poems managed to survive no matter how many times they were dragged around the world.

Time became a concern as friends and family made their final eternal trips. With each funeral, each flower spray and each sympathy card, mortality became a reality and the need to organize and type the handwritten scraps became a priority. When Bob became ill and his injuries caught up with him and the surgeries multiplied, his mind returned to his words. It was time to see if anyone else could relate to the chronicling of so many feelings, events, disappointments, remembrances, loves and lost opportunities.

Thanks to this, he can begin a journey into the past to encounter once more the day when, as a child, a special teacher led him to witness life experiences of others, of real people. Some of these experiences were painful, others not, but all were crucial to understanding our path through this world. Sometimes, though, that understanding requires the passage of time, the acceptance of our limitations, or the recognition that the transcendent awaits us within ourselves, even if we are lost in the darkest of caves.''

The Witch of Sulphur Mountain: The Supernatural Life of Agnes Baron, Meher Baba's Beloved Watchdog【電子書籍】[ David Madison ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Witch of Sulphur Mountain: The Supernatural Life of Agnes Baron, Meher Baba's Beloved Watchdog【電子書籍】[ David Madison ]

"Baba, if you want Meher Mount I'll keep it for you through hellfire and damnation!"

With these words fiery Agnes Baron commences the remaining 46 years of her hard-scrabble life devoted to Indian mystic Meher Baba who claims to be the Avatar (God in human form). She will get plenty of both. Two years prior in 1946, at Meher Baba's behest, she, Jean Adriel, and other Baba-lovers found and established Meher Mount, an idyllic 172-acre retreat atop Sulphur Mountain in Ojai, CA. By the time she made her vow, Jean and the others had departed, leaving Meher Mount in her hands. But how will she keep "Baba's Place" out of the hands of covetous schemers? She doesn't own it. Jean does. And if Jean wants to sell it, there's nothing she can do. Or is there? It brings out the witch in her. For this Meher Baba nicknames Agnes "Agni," Sanskrit word for fire, and dubs her his "Beloved Watchdog." For 10 years she worries herself more than any dog its bone that it will be sold from under Baba's feet. Shortly before his only visit to Meher Mount, on August 2, 1956, Agni gets Meher Mount in her name. But her worries aren't over. A single woman without means, she finds work as a substitute teacher, and sells strawberries she grows, and lives with the haunting fear she won't be able to make the mortgage payments, and the bank will seize it. Some who covet the property try to make her a ward of the state.

Agnes Baron's remarkable life is written in the form of an idyll, a narrative poem in heroic verse. And heroic aptly describes her 87-year odyssey. Shortly after graduating in 1928 with a sociology degree from Antioch College, known for turning out revolutionaries, Agnes departs for war-torn Europe, on fire to help "My Friends Abroad." Working as a freelance journalist, she chronicles the plight of the Jews fleeing anti-Semitism, and goes to Lisbon where she "bullies" bureaucrats for passports, and shipping companies and captains for passage. She travels the Balkan states, chronicling the plight of the underdogs: the poor, sick, oppressed, and downtrodden. In Spain she graphically depicts the atrocities of the Spanish Civil War, the bombings by German and Italian planes of Guernica and Barcelona. Throughout Europe she raises the alarm of the growing Nazi menace, and with the outbreak of WWII, the mounting horrors of the holocaust. After 13 years, sickened with man's inhumanity to man, Agnes abandons her faith in God and returns to San Francisco, lost. "I hated humanity. I just wanted everybody to die. Blow them to hell. I just hated everybody. I was so in the deeps of despair that I gave myself arthritis of the spine. Then I stumbled on this lovely Quaker lady, and I went to one of her meetings. She went to Vedanta. I thought, Well if she goes to Vedanta it must be respectable. So I went up the hill and walked into the Vedanta Temple, and for the first time I had a ray of hope. There must be some hope for humanity. . . ."

She embraces Vedanta, and asks the swami of the Vedanta Temple if he will accept her as a nun. "I don't take women," he tells her, "but my brother swami in Hollywood does." She goes there, he accepts her, and she lives the life of a Vedanta nun for two years, but still she does not find peace. Then she realizes why. She has to let God back into her heart. She does. But then she catches the swami in an indiscretion, and leaves him in disgust, telling him, "You're a fallen guru."

She goes to a nearby Vedanta temple, Ananda Ashrama, is accepted, but then is told her typing late at night is keeping others awake. The swami tells her of another place two miles up the road, the New Life Center, devoted to an Indian guru. She wants nothing more to do with gurus, but she needs a place where she can write in peace. She goes there, rents a little place on a hill, and tells the owner, Jean Adriel, "Look, I don't want anything to do with your damned [this under her breath] guru." His name is Meher ...

Memoirs of Montparnasse【電子書籍】[ John Glassco ]

Memoirs of Montparnasse is a delicious book about being young, restless, reckless, and without cares. It is also the best and liveliest of the many chronicles of 1920s Paris and the exploits of the lost generation. In 1928, nineteen-year-old John Glassco escaped Montreal and his overbearing father for the wilder shores of Montparnasse. He remained there until his money ran out and his health collapsed, and he enjoyed every minute of his stay. Remarkable for their candor and humor, Glassco’s memoirs have the daft logic of a wild but utterly absorbing adventure, a tale of desire set free that is only faintly shadowed by sadness at the inevitable passage of time.

A Gospel of Uncertainty【電子書籍】[ Makitia Thompson ]

A Gospel of Uncertainty is not a book of answers.
It is a record of what remains when certainty fails.

Written as a passage collection, this book adopts the language and gravity of scripture while refusing its conclusions. These are not passages arranged for comfort, but fragments of testimony; sermons of doubt, prayers spoken into silence, and confessions made without expectation of absolution.

Here, faith is not presented as obedience, but as survival. Questioning is not treated as betrayal, but as devotion. God is addressed directly, sometimes tenderly, often in anger, and always without permission. The sacred is not protected from scrutiny; it is subjected to it.

This book does not attempt to reconcile belief and disbelief. It allows them to coexist; uneasily, honestly, and without resolution. It speaks to those who have been taught not to ask why, to those who have knelt long enough for their hands to go numb, and to anyone who has remained within faith not because they were sure, but because they were still searching.

A Gospel of Uncertainty does not offer reassurance.
It offers recognition.

This is a text for those who question God and remain anyway.
For those who have lost certainty and refuse to pretend otherwise.
For those who believe that truth can still be spoken, even when it does not arrive whole.

For an urban English-speaker in the twenty-first century, the original language of Dante Alighieri's Inferno, the first act of his trilogy, the Comedy, would read like a shockingly accurate critique of today's globalized society, if we could understand it. Dante's Inferno: A Wanderer in Hell gives second-millennial English-language readers a chance to share the pathos, the humor, and the raw political aggression of Dante's vision of Hell.

Dante's Inferno: A Wanderer in Hell preserves the meaning of Dante's verses, line by line. Where a literal translation of his highly philosophical but often slang-rich text will not make sense for the twenty-first century English-speaking reader, the most reasonable compromise of the literal and figurative is used.

Written in exile from Florence, Dante's Inferno speaks to those of us today who question our own and our societies' values. Dante, lost in the middle of his lifetime, wanders behind Virgil down the narrow safe passage through Hell's increasingly nightmarish suffering. On this horrendous journey, Dante will come to understand the consequences of the social evils running rampant in Europe's cancerously spreading empire that values profits more than people and teaches its citizens to prize their own personal pleasure above principle, spreading sexual license, gang turf war, and international political and religious violence.

The Story of My Mother Dear Revised A Tribute to all Mothers【電子書籍】[ Isaiah Drone III ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Story of My Mother Dear Revised A Tribute to all Mothers【電子書籍】[ Isaiah Drone III ]

The inspiration to write The Story of My Mother Dear develop sometime in mid October 2009 while standing on my grandmother Ophelia’s porch in North Little Rock, Arkansas. This book actually represents a circle of life to me centered on my service in the military. Because when I enlisted my first four years in the military, my father and grandfather died within a number of days apart. However, my two grandmothers died within hours apart after my last eight years in the military. You see I didn’t know then what I know now and that is God chases the ones that He loves. In reading this book I want you to understand that God loves you and He has spent century’s designing you and equipping you to reign with Him forever. He would rather warn you before destroying you and given up HIS BELOVED. I was devastated at this moment of my humanity because I had just lost two of the most important women in my life in less than a few hours apart. The fall season was settling in as I thought about all the things I wish I had done. My Mother Dear Marie was always looking out for me, no matter what wrongs I was accused of I was still her baby, and even her husband’s name was given to me. After my dad had got sick we stop coming around the family as much as we used to my sister and me. I would visit whenever I was in town and try to at least spend the night on her sofa or talk with her over the phone. So I was very reluctant when hearing the news of her passing. I had just visited her in the hospital and pedicure her feet. I would’ve never thought that she would leave me but she must have gone into shock when she heard about my other granny. Ophelia was sweeter than pumpkin pie and if you don’t believe me, ask other people that knew her. They would agree with me and even tell you why. Her prayers are why I am here today with the mental state of mind to write each line and passage without cracking up like glass and cheap china. The Lord gave her as a present, eternal life in Heaven on her birthday, and HE gave Marie Drone that same thing. The spirits of Marie Drone and Ophelia Johnson come to life by the seeds of love that they each planted in the heart and mind of their grandson Isaiah Drone III. In this book their spirits are awaken to tell their individual stories. The Story of My Mother Dear will draw the reader and the listener into the mind of women of old that refuse to let circumstances dictate their outcome. There is something extremely joyful about this book and hopefully it will touch the mind and heart of someone like it touched me. This was my first book so I experienced many obstacles and transitions. Now I have to be truthful with you and the truth is that I have cried tremendously throughout this book. My tears have been by the puddles. My cries have been extremely loud, not for me or my family and our experiences but for the pain of this lady. I saw her one-day outside in the cold pushing a shopping cart. As I begin to write, I could see this strange woman walking the streets and I felt that she never even knew who her mama was. She has been alone her whole life and if you’re reading this book now. I guarantee it will change your very life. Let’s interject something to you sweetie, God loves you, and whatever you have done or been through HE forgives you. So hold your head high and look to the sky and I promise you it’s going to be all right. I feel HIM covering you right now from the top of your head like warm molasses down, down your back and your spine and down to your knees and now your toes. See! We walk by faith and not by sight, now dust your-self off. Sorry, I had to do some needed work there, now back to the book. The structure or skeleton of this book is connected by songs and love poems of Divine Inspiration expressing heartfelt situations and dilemmas that affect not only the characters in this book. But, also the lives of many people transcending over borders of ethnicity and cultural differences divested

Epitome of the Ancient History of Japan【電子書籍】[ Nicholas McLeod ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Epitome of the Ancient History of Japan【電子書籍】[ Nicholas McLeod ]

"McLeod gives a list of the emperors of Japan...the first of them is Osee...the same name as that of the last King of Israel." -The American Israelite, May 18, 1905
"McLeod in his book 'Epitome of the Ancient History of Japan'...points out the agreement between the first known king of Japan, Osee, 730 B.C. and the last king of Israel who was Hosea, who died in 722 B.C." -Buffalo Times, Feb. 3, 1924
"Contains proofs of the Japanese descent from Osee, the last king of Israel." -A Bibliography of the Japanese Empire (1895)
"The descendants of a Negro race may also be seen in different parts of the country." -Nicholas McLeod
"Spent decades in Japan, wrote Japanese history as a history of the ten tribes in the Japanese isles." -The Ten Lost Tribes: A World History (2009)
"McLeod self-published several books theorizing the Japanese people were actually Israelites." -Early Mormon Missionary Activities in Japan (2010)
"Speculated that Japanese people themselves may be direct descendants of part of the Ten Lost Tribes." -Jesus: From India to Japan (2017)
"One group was what he called the Japanese Jewish people, even mentioned a black race, similar to those in Africa." -Rediscovering Japan (2010)
"A good summary of evidence for Jewish origins found by that author, still mentioned by proponents today." -The Sacred Science of Ancient Japan (2014)

Can evidence of the Lost Tribes of Israel be found in Japan? Yes, the holy class of Japan is descended from the Lost Tribes of Israel; the first known king of Japan was called Osee and came to the throne in 730 B.C., identifying him with Hoshea, the last king of Israel, who died in 722 B.C. Or so claims Nicholas McLeod in his 1878 book "Epitome of the Ancient History of Japan."

A Scot who started his career in the herring industry before he ended up in Japan as a missionary, Nicholas McLeod (1868?1889) was a native of the Isle of Skye, Scotland, who was known for his theory that the Japanese people descended from the Lost Tribes of Israel. McLeod also provides evidence that "descendants of a Negro race" could be found in remote regions of Japan.

McLeod's 1878 book contain extensive comparisons of the religious rituals of Judaism and Shintoism as evidence of the links between ancient Israel and Japan.

According to Zvi Ben-Dor Benite, MacLeod had been a missionary who spent decades in Japan and Korea "searching for the true Israelites". The following passage is an example from the book in which McLeod draws correlations between his observations on Japan and the fulfillment of biblical prophecy:

"The civilized race of the Aa. Inus, the Tokugawa and the Machi No Hito of the large towns, by dwelling in the tent or tabernacle shaped houses first erected by Jin Mu Tenno, have fulfilled Noah's prophecy regarding Japhet, 'He shall dwell in the tents of Shem.'"

Regarding dark-skinned Japanese, McLeod writes:

"In my travels I came across the remnants of a Black Race, nearly all of them had the woolly head and features of the Negro... Negro faces are to be seen scattered up and down the Empire; they have the complexion of a Mulatto. ...The Japanese called them Black Devils."

McLeod's remarkable book is still cited to the present day by proponents of the Japanese Jewish ancestry theory.

For a dollar, passengers could enjoy the novelty of a ride and the slow panorama of the shoreline. Through richly detailed narration and introspective reflection, Proust introduces the narrator's recollections of childhood in Combray and recounts the story of Charles Swann's obsessive love for Odette de Cr?cy. A Journey of Repentance, Renewal, and Return【電子書籍】[ R.E. Hasselbach ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Journey of Repentance, Renewal, and Return【電子書籍】[ R.E. Hasselbach ]

In this nonfiction debut, Hasselbach takes readers through the liturgical celebration of Lent, which stretches from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday. The period is typically seen by Christian celebrants as a time of reflection and personal denial-"What are you giving up for Lent?" is the typical question. The author takes a broad and scripturally informed view of the subject, issuing a call to action to Christian readers: "First, we must do a fiercely honest examination of our lives-before we repent, we must know we are sinners." The book breaks down Lent by day, with each section providing plenty of space for readers to write their own reflections. This is a work that can be used extensively by readers, shaped to their own personal interpretations of the season. The volume's strongest feature by far is Hasselbach's own insights into not only Lent specifically, but also the Christian faith more generally. "If Jesus's resurrection was for him alone, it would be amazing but not significant for us all these years later," one passage goes. "It would have changed him, but not us." "When Jesus tells us to become like little children, he is instructing us to acknowledge that we are one with the poor, the suffering, the broken, and the lost," reads another. "That means we must accept those whom others reject." These and other observations about the nature of Christianity crop up throughout the book and are uniformly intriguing. Even readers who have little interest in performing an active Lent will still find the bulk of this work invigoratingly thought-provoking. And the volume's usefulness during Lent itself is self-evident.
