In "The Lost House," Richard Harding Davis transports readers into a richly woven narrative centered around a mysterious estate that serves as a microcosm of early 20th-century American society. With a keen eye for detail, Davis employs his signature vivid prose and a blend of realism and romanticism to depict themes of loss, memory, and the passage of time. The story unfolds through intricately developed characters, each reflecting the complexities of human relationship within the constraints of societal expectations, making it a quintessential work of its time. Richard Harding Davis, an esteemed journalist and fiction writer, was deeply influenced by the changing landscapes of America and the shifting values of the Gilded Age. His experiences travelling and reporting from various socio-political contexts infused his writing with a depth that resonates throughout "The Lost House." Davis's affinity for historical detail and his understanding of human nature underscore his desire to illuminate the societal flaws and emotional truths of his era, making this novel both a personal and cultural exploration. This novel is highly recommended for readers interested in the interplay between physical space and emotional narrative. The American Mind: The E. T. Earl Lectures【電子書籍】[ Bliss Perry ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The American Mind: The E. T. Earl Lectures【電子書籍】[ Bliss Perry ]

Many years ago, as a student in a foreign university, I remember attacking, with the complacency of youth, a German history of the English drama, in six volumes. I lost courage long before the author reached the age of Elizabeth, but I still recall the subject of the opening chapter: it was devoted to the physical geography of Great Britain. Writing, as the good German professor did, in the triumphant hour of Taine's theory as to the significance of place, period, and environment in determining the character of any literary production, what could be more logical than to begin at the beginning? Have not the chalk cliffs guarding the southern coast of England, have not the fatness of the midland counties and the soft rainy climate of a North Atlantic island, and the proud, tenacious, self-assertive folk that are bred there, all left their trace upon A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Every Man in his Humour and She Stoops to Conquer? Undoubtedly. Latitude and longitude, soil and rainfall and food-supply, racial origins and crossings, political and social and economic conditions, must assuredly leave their marks upon the mental and artistic productiveness of a people and upon the personality of individual writers. Taine, who delighted to point out all this, and whose English Literature remains a monument of the defects as well as of the advantages of his method, was of course not the inventor of the climatic theory. It is older than Aristotle, who discusses it in his treatise on Politics. It was a topic of interest to the scholars of the Renaissance. Englishmen of the seventeenth century, with an unction of pseudo-science added to their natural patriotism, discovered in the English climate one of the reasons of England's greatness. Thomas Sprat, writing in 1667 on the History of the Royal Society, waxes bold and asserts: "If there can be a true character given of the Universal Temper of any Nation under Heaven, then certainly this must be ascribed to our countrymen, that they have commonly an unaffected sincerity, that they love to deliver their minds with a sound simplicity, that they have the middle qualities between the reserved, subtle southern and the rough, unhewn northern people, that they are not extremely prone to speak, that they are more concerned what others will think of the strength than of the fineness of what they say, and that a universal modesty possesses them. These qualities are so conspicuous and proper to the soil that we often hear them objected to us by some of our neighbor Satyrists in more disgraceful expressions.... Even the position of our climate, the air, the influence of the heaven, the composition of the English blood, as well as the embraces of the Ocean, seem to join with the labours of the Royal Society to render our country a Land of Experimental Knowledge." The excellent Sprat was the friend and executor of the poet Cowley, who has in the Preface to his Poems a charming passage about the relation of literature to the external circumstances in which it is written. "If wit be such a Plant that it scarce receives heat enough to keep it alive even in the summer of our cold Clymate, how can it choose but wither in a long and a sharp winter? a warlike, various and a tragical age is best to write of, but worst to write in." And he adds this, concerning his own art of poetry: "There is nothing that requires so much serenity and chearfulness of spirit; it must not be either overwhelmed with the cares of Life, or overcast with the Clouds of Melancholy and Sorrow, or shaken and disturbed with the storms of injurious Fortune; it must, like the Halcyon, have fair weather to breed in.

The Service【電子書籍】[ Henry David Thoreau ]

When some twenty years ago there were sent to me from the portfolios of Emerson papers by different friends of ours, I found among them an essay of twenty-two full manuscript pages, in the familiar script of Thoreau, tied together with knots of faded pink ribbon, like his College Commencement "part," but with no numbering of the pages. If made up, as it probably was (according to Thoreau's constant custom), from his Journals, the fact cannot be well ascertained, so many of the entries before 1841 having been destroyed or lost. More than any of his published writings, it displays that taste for paradox which often is found in authors of a singular originality, and of such a profound imagination as Thoreau had. Its form was perhaps suggested by the discourses on Peace and Non-resistance which in 1840 were so numerous in New England; while the native pugnacity of Thoreau provoked him to take up the cause of war and persist in the apostolic symbolism of the soldier of the Lord, and the Middle-Age crusader. Human life is his topic, and he views it with an Oriental scope of thought, in which distinctions of Time and Space are lost in the wide prospect of Eternity and Immortality. Curiously at variance with this is the play upon words,ーa habit which he never outgrew; while his wonderful glances at outward nature, always interpreted symbolically of the spiritual life, indicate how early and intense was that perception of the aspects of the universe which first (and perhaps chiefly still) awakened an interest in Thoreau's pages. Characteristic, too, are his ecstasies concerning Music, of which he was ever the enthusiastic votary. Thus in a passage from some Journal, cited by Ellery Channing in his rich chaos of selections in "Thoreau the Poet-Naturalist," he says: "What a significant comment on our life is the least strain of music! When I hear music I fear no danger; I am invulnerable; I see no foe; I am related to the earliest times and the latest. I hear music below; it washes the dust off my life, and everything I look at. The field of my life becomes a boundless plain, glorious totread, with no death or disappointment at the end of it. In the light of this strain there is no Thou nor I. It paints the landscape suddenly; it is at once another land,ーthe abode of poetry."

When Breath Was Drink For Ghosts【電子書籍】[ Peter Strayer ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】When Breath Was Drink For Ghosts【電子書籍】[ Peter Strayer ]

When Breath Was Drink for Ghosts is a meditation on love, loss, faith, and the aching beauty of life. In this collection of 200 poems, poet Peter Strayer offers a voice both intimate and expansive, weaving together deeply personal experiences with universal themes that transcend time and place. His poetry moves like memoryーsometimes sharp and immediate, sometimes blurred and elusiveーpulling the reader into a nonlinear yet profoundly structured journey, much like the human soul itself. At the heart of Strayer's work is a reckoning with pain and the longing for redemption. For example, in his poem 'Soliloquy Three (Sonnet 84)', he crafts a haunting portrait of regret and the irreversible consequences of choice. Through vivid imageryーbruises that never quite heal, blood that drips onto spoken viewsーStrayer captures the agony of lost dreams and the slow, often futile search for solace. His poetry does not shy away from suffering but faces it with an honesty that is both bracing and compassionate. And yet, this collection is not merely an elegy to pain. Strayer's work, while steeped in grief, carries the promise of renewal within it. His words stretch toward beauty, toward transcendence, toward the quiet moments that sustain us. There are pastoral poems that celebrate the rhythms of nature and human existenceーpoems that remind us of the simple joys of wind over fields, the hush of morning, and the sacred ordinary. Some love poems, tender and unguarded, speak to the fragility and strength of the human heart. Some spiritual poems wrestle with doubt and belief, with the tension between silence and revelation. Strayer's poetry is both accessible and deeply layered, drawing from classical, philosophical, and spiritual traditions while remaining rooted in the immediacy of the modern world. He writes with a timeless quality, yet his work speaks directly to the wounds of our ageーthe fragmentation, the longing for meaning, and the need for poetry as both refuge and reckoning. As fellow poet Jonathan Jackson writes in his endorsement, "When Breath Was Drink for Ghosts arrives at a time when the world is in desperate need of poetry's healing balm." More than just a collection of verse, this book is an invitationーto pause, reflect, and feel. Each poem asks the reader to step into a space of quiet contemplation, listen to the echoes of their longing, and perhaps find something of themselves in Strayer's carefully chosen words. Whether exploring the depths of sorrow or celebrating the fleeting brilliance of joy, *When Breath Was Drink for Ghosts* lingers in the mind and heart long after the final page is turned. It is not just a bookーit is an experience, a mirror, a testament to the beauty and burden of being alive. When Breath Was Drink for Ghosts is a book for those who seek depth in language and meaning. It will resonate with readers who find solace in poetry that does not flinch from the realities of pain, yet still reaches for beauty. Lovers of classic and contemporary verse alike will appreciate Strayer's blend of accessibility and complexity, his ability to weave the personal with the universal. Those drawn to the works of Rainer Maria Rilke, T.S. Eliot, or Gerard Manley Hopkins will find a kindred spirit in these pages. Likewise, readers with a contemplative natureーthose who wrestle with questions of faith, loss, and the passage of timeーwill discover in this collection a voice that speaks to their own inner journey. Whether for the seasoned poetry reader or someone simply seeking words that resonate in a noisy world, *When Breath Was Drink for Ghosts* offers a space to linger, reflect, and remember what it means to feel deeply.

A Lambda Literary Awards Finalist
Named one of the best books of 2017 by NPR's Book Concierge

A revelatory narrative of the intersecting lives and works of revered authors Virginia Woolf, T. S. Eliot, E. M. Forster and D. H. Lawrence during 1922, the birth year of modernism

The World Broke in Two tells the fascinating story of the intellectual and personal journeys four legendary writers, Virginia Woolf, T. S. Eliot, E. M. Forster, and D. H. Lawrence, make over the course of one pivotal year. As 1922 begins, all four are literally at a loss for words, confronting an uncertain creative future despite success in the past. The literary ground is shifting, as Ulysses is published in February and Proust’s In Search of Lost Time begins to be published in England in the autumn. Yet, dismal as their prospects seemed in January, by the end of the year Woolf has started Mrs. Dalloway, Forster has, for the first time in nearly a decade, returned to work on the novel that will become A Passage to India, Lawrence has written Kangaroo, his unjustly neglected and most autobiographical novel, and Eliot has finishedーand published to acclaimー“The Waste Land."

As Willa Cather put it, “The world broke in two in 1922 or thereabouts,” and what these writers were struggling with that year was in fact the invention of modernism. Based on original research, Bill Goldstein's The World Broke in Two captures both the literary breakthroughs and the intense personal dramas of these beloved writers as they strive for greatness.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I could never get past the first six or seven pages of Heart of Darkness, a difficult novella published in 1899. I liked the ominous atmosphere, and I was glad to get out. #2 I wanted to be an academic like Lyndall Gordon, who had a love of literature and shaped and framed it. I was surprised and dismayed when she said she didn’t see me in that role. #3 I was not ready for Heart of Darkness when I first read it. It was a book that took me a long time to love. I thought that the men might enjoy the gruesome, disturbing parts of the story, but I never lost sight of the fact that it had taken me a long time to love it. #4 I began the book club by reading a little bit of the background information on Joseph Conrad and his journey upriver in the Congo. I then read a passage from a letter he wrote to his aunt about his health, which was far from good.

The Saviour of the World【電子書籍】[ B. B. Warfield ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Saviour of the World【電子書籍】[ B. B. Warfield ]

I wish to speak to you to-day of the parable of the prodigal son, or, as it is becoming very common to call it, perhaps with greater exactness, the parable of the lost son. I shall not read it to you again. It has already been read in the lesson for the day. And in any event it is too familiar to require that you should be reminded even of the minuter details of the narrative. Probably no passage of the Scriptures is more widely known or more universally admired. The conversation and literature of devotion are full of allusions to it. And in the conversation and literature of the world it has far from an unhonoured place.

It owes the high appreciation it has won, no doubt, in large part to the exquisiteness of its literary form. From this point of view it fully deserves not only the measured praise of a Grotius, but the enthusiastic exclamations of a Trench. It is “the finest of Christ’s parables, filled with true feeling, and painted in the most beautiful colours.” It is “the pearl and crown of all the parables of Scripture.” Nothing could exceed the chaste perfection of the narrative, the picturesque truth of its portraiture, the psychological delicacy of its analysis. Here is a gem of story-telling, which must be pronounced nothing less than artistically perfect, whether viewed in its general impression, or in the elaboration of its details. We must add to its literary beauty, however, the preciousness of the lesson it conveys before we account for the place it has won for itself in the hearts of men. In this setting of fretted gold, a marvel of the artificer, there lies a priceless jewel; and this jewel is displayed to such advantage by its setting that men cannot choose but see and admire.

Firebrands The Untold Story of Four Women Who Made and Unmade Prohibition【電子書籍】[ Gioia Diliberto ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Firebrands The Untold Story of Four Women Who Made and Unmade Prohibition【電子書籍】[ Gioia Diliberto ]

Guaranteed to change how you picture Prohibition, this lively history turns the spotlight on four women in the immediate aftermath of winning the vote who played influential roles on all sides of the Eighteenth and Twenty-First Amendments.

In the popular imagination, the story of Prohibition in America is a story of men and male violence, one full of federal agents fighting gangsters over the sale of moonshine. In contrast, Firebrands is the story of four Jazz Age dynamosーall women ?who were forces behind the passage, the enforcement, the defiance, and, ultimately, the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment. They battled each other directly, and they learned to marshal clout with cowed and hypocritical legislators, almost all of them men. Their clash over Prohibition stands as the first significant exercise of women’s political power since women gained the right to vote, and their influence on the American political scene wouldn’t be equaled for decades.

In Gioia Diliberto’s fresh and timely take on this period of history, we meet Ella Boole, the stern and ambitious leader of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, who campaigned fiercely to introduce Prohibition and fought desperately to keep it alive. We also meet Mabel Walker Willebrandt, the most powerful woman in America at the time, who served as the top federal prosecutor charged with enforcing Prohibition. Diliberto tells the story, too, of silent film star Texas Guinan, who ran New York speakeasies backed by the mob and showed that Prohibition was not only absurd but unenforceable. And, she follows Pauline Morton Sabin, a glamorous Manhattan aristocrat who belatedly recognized the cascading evil in Prohibition and mobilized the movement to kill it.

These women led their opposing forces of “Wets” and “Drys” across a teeming landscape of bootleggers, gangsters, federal agents, temperance fanatics, and cowardly politicians, many of them secret drunks. Building on the momentum of suffrage, they forged a path for the activists who followed during the great civil rights battles of the mid-twentieth century. Yet, they have been largely lost to history. In Firebrands, Diliberto finally gives these dynamic figures their due, creating a varied and dramatic portrait of women wielding power, in politics, society, and popular culture.

The author of Brother Carnival and The World’s Smallest Bible examines small-town life in this collection of sixteen stories.

There is an inexplicable gravity in a small town. It can be read and enjoyed like a favorite book for most of its inhabitants. Comforting are its streets and institutions, its wedding and obituary announcements. Banjo Grease is about life and death in a mill town where at each epiphany and rite of passage, the narrator yields a ration of innocence. Characters portray class as a marker as strong as race and gender, and distrust that they will ever escape in their lifetimes. Faulkner uses the term “eager fatalism.” These stories’ cumulative effect asks: When exchanging naivet? for worldliness, what is lost in denying one’s past?

**“These stories float through the reader like frozen images. Each one fits into the others unevenly as jagged glass. This is the essence of great fiction at the end of the century; Ray Carver and Thom Jones plowed into some stupendous force that whips along with a tilted wild energy.” ーKate Gale, author of The Goldilocks Zone

“Dennis Must’s first collection of short stories is no ordinary debut but the mature work of a fully accomplished literary artist. Moreover, his originality, his deep irreverence, and his compassion for working-class men and women . . . Strivers and seekers of dreams, signal him as an inspired author in a new American grainーa visionary, poet, and realist.” ーTom Jenks, cofounder and editor, Narrative Magazine

“Dennis Must’s stunning collection Banjo Grease is just what one hopes for: a series of intriguing, interlocking stories whose cumulative force goes beyond the sum of its parts.”ー Geoffrey Clark, author of Two, Two, Lily-White Boys**

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Wolves of the Sea: Being a Tale of the Colonies from the Manuscript of One Geoffry Carlyle, Seaman, Narrating Certain Strange Adventures Which Befell Him Aboard the Pirate Craft "Namur"【電子書籍】[ Randall Parrish ]

Anson Carlyle, aged twenty-three, the ninth in descent from Captain Geoffry Carlyle, of Glasgow, Scotland, was among the heroic Canadian dead at Vimy Ridge. Unmarried, and the last of his line, what few treasures he possessed fell into alien hands. Among these was a manuscript, apparently written in the year 1687, and which, through nine generations, had been carefully preserved, yet never made public. The paper was yellowed and discolored by years, occasionally a page was missing, and the writing itself had become almost indecipherable. Much indeed had to be traced by use of a microscope. The writer was evidently a man of some education, and clear thought, but exceedingly diffuse, in accordance with the style of his time, and possessing small conception of literary form. In editing this manuscript for modern readers I have therefore been compelled to practically rewrite it entirely, retaining merely the essential facts, with an occasional descriptive passage, although I have conscientiously followed the original development of the tale. In this reconstruction much quaintness of language, as well as appeal to probability, may have been lost, and for this my only excuse is the necessity of thus making the story readable. I have no doubt as to its essential truth, nor do I question the purpose which dominated this rover of the sea in his effort to record the adventures of his younger life. As a picture of those days of blood and courage, as well as a story of love and devotion, I deem it worthy preservation, regretting only the impossibility of now presenting it in print exactly as written by Geoffry Carlyle.

The Tale of Genji【電子書籍】[ Murasaki Shikibu ]

READERS of the Diaries of Court Ladies of Old Japan, translated by Madame Omori and Professor Doi, will remember that the second of the three diaries is that of a certain Murasaki Shikibu. The little that is known of this lady’s life has been set forth by Miss Amy Lowell in her Introduction to that book. A few dates, most of them very insecure, will be found in Appendix I of this volume. It is, however, certain that Murasaki was born in the last quarter of the tenth century, that she lost her husband in 1001, and that a few years later she became lady-in-waiting to the Empress Akiko. We know that she was chosen for this post on account of her proficiency in Chinese, a subject which the young Empress was anxious to study. Akiko was then about sixteen, so that Murasaki’s position in the house was what, in our parlance, we should call that of ‘governess’ rather than of lady-in-waiting. Akiko, though officially espoused to the Emperor, was still living at home, and her father soon began to pay somewhat embarrassing attentions to the new governess. From the Diary we know that on one occasion at any rate his solicitations were refused. Was the Tale of Genji or any part of it already written when Murasaki came to Court? We only know that in a passage of the Diary which apparently refers to the year 1008 she speaks of her novel having been read out loud to the Emperor. His majesty’s comment (‘This is a learned lady; she must have been reading the Chronicle of Japan’) shows that what was read to him must have been the opening chapter of the tale. For in the whole work there is only one sentence which could possibly remind any one of the Nihongi (‘Chronicle of Japan’), and that is the conclusion of Chapter I. So though we may be certain that the first few books were already written in 1008, it is quite possible that the whole fifty-four were not finished till long afterwards. But from the Sarashina Diary, the first of the three contained in the Court Ladies of Old Japan, we know that the Tale of Genji in its complete form was already a classic in the year 1022. The unknown authoress of this diary spent her childhood in a remote province. Her great pleasure was to read romances; but except at the Capital they were hard to come by. She prays fervently to Buddha to bring her quickly to Kyoto, and let her read ‘dozens and dozens of stories.’ In 1022 she at last arrives at Court and her wildest dreams are fulfilled. Packed in a big box her aunt sends round ‘the fifty-odd chapters of Genji’ and a whole library of shorter fairy-tales and romances. ‘Are there really such people as this in the world? Were Genji my lover, though he should come to me but once in the whole year, how happy I should be! Or were I Lady Ukifune in her mountain home, gazing as the months go by at flowers, red autumn leaves, moonlight and snow; happy, despite loneliness and misfortune, in the thought that at any moment the wonderful letter might come....’ Such were the r?veries of one who read the Tale of Genji more than nine hundred years ago. I think that, could they but read it in the original, few readers would feel that in all those centuries the charm of the book had in any way evaporated. The task of translation in such a case is bound to be arduous and discouraging; but I have all the time been spurred by the belief that I am translating by far the greatest novel of the East, and one which, even if compared with the fiction of Europe, takes its place as one of the dozen greatest masterpieces of the world.
