Selections from Five English Poets【電子書籍】[ Various ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Selections from Five English Poets【電子書籍】[ Various ]

When a poem is read aloud it is easy to realize that poetry is closely related to music. Like music it awakens vague, mysterious feelings which cannot be expressed in ordinary speech; and the person who fails to catch the subtle melody of a poem gets but little from it even though he understands perfectly the meaning of the words. To illustrate this, put into commonplace prose a passage of beautiful verse,ーfor instance, lines 358-372 of The Ancient Mariner, beginning, "Sometimes a-dropping from the sky,"ーand then compare the prose version with the original. The two will be found as unlike as the flower after it has been dissected by the botanist, and the same flower still on the stalk, opening its petals to the morning sun. The Greeks divided all poetry into three kinds,ーlyric, epic, and dramatic poetry, and there is no better general division. The lyric, which is properly a song, expresses the transient feeling or mood of the writer, and therefore is never very long. One must be sensitive to the music of verse to care for a poem of this kind, because it tells no story. Dryden's Song for St. Cecilia's Day and Gray's Elegy, both included in the present volume, are lyrics. Among the most beautiful of English lyrics are Milton's Lycidas, Wordsworth's Ode on Intimations of Immortality, and Shelley's To a Skylark and Adonais; while of American poems of the same kind none is nobler than Lowell's Commemoration Ode. Short lyrics, among which are songs and sonnets, can be found in the works of almost every poet of note, whether English or American. Under the head of epic or narrative poetry are included long productions like the Iliad and the Odyssey of Homer and the Paradise Lost of Milton, and shorter poems, such as Coleridge's Ancient Mariner and _Longfellow's Evangeline. Indeed, every piece of verse that tells a story, however short it may be, belongs with the epics or narratives. Dramatic poetry includes well-known plays like Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice and Julius Caesar, and also certain poems not written for the stage, such as Browning's Pippa Passes and Shelley's Prometheus Unbound. In a dramatic production the poet goes out of himself for the time being, and expresses the thoughts and feelings of other characters. It may have been noticed that in this description of the principal kinds of poetry, only three of the poems included in this book have been mentioned. This is because the other threeーThe Traveller, The Deserted Village, and The Cotter's Saturday Nightーdo not fit exactly into any of the divisions. One would class them with the epics rather than with the lyrics or the dramas, but they are not properly narratives, because they tell no story; they are really descriptive and reflective poems. One often comes upon a difficulty of this kind when attempting to classify a poem, and the truth is that several smaller divisions are necessary if every production is to be placed where it belongs. But while it is desirable to know whether one is reading a lyric, an epic, or a drama, it is far more important to enjoy a beautiful poem than to be able properly to classify it. The following list may prove useful to those who wish to know more of the poets represented in this volume than can be learned from the short sketches of their lives which it includes

While in a fine state of total inebriation, Gabriel drained his vein onto a sand dune and perceived a most perfect being. A godlike image appeared on a starless night while in country. This powerful force would permit him safe passage through the conflict if he would replace an eyelash lost in a childs dream and return to the world or home with the souls of his dead comrades. His five-year-old niece had given him an earring for good luck before he left for the war. He wore the black crescent shape on a silver chain around his neck alongside a Saint Christopher medal. This earring made it possible for him to return home with the souls of his more unfortunate companions.

Back from Southeast Asia, he enters a saloon in New York City and chats with the owner. He mentions he had served overseas. This man asks for a quiet moment and summons the patrons to propose a toast. No one takes him seriously as he is in his cups. When the bartender turns up the jukebox, the room resumes its convivial atmosphere of the 60s free love and introspection. Realizing he is not amused, he leaves for an evening with a war buddy and his young family. Its the commencement of his postwar experience with souls in tow. He finds solace with his body wasted. My bodys aching and I cant find my way home, like the song plays out.

His years pass with no great interests, and he gets by well enough with a day-to-day existence but has accomplished nothing but keeps himself in blue-collar work and in more barrooms. When he meets up with a wealthy acquaintance from a tiny Midwest college they had attended, he thinks of him as a shimmering deity of sorts. Wings, the handsome poet who drove his hunter green Morgan sports car through Lake Forests bright autumn afternoons down Sheridan Road scattering bushels of fallen leaves with selfless irony, a smirk and no smile, now conversed regularly with Gabriel who thinks him quite the fellow in the sense that anyone with that amount of wealth should be able to do the greatest things. Wings had married while still in college, and his wife gave birth to a daughter who kept him out of the draft. The child was another mans progeny. Wings too had to survive the war.

His conversation of manuscripts, investments, inheritance, love entanglements with no resolution or sense didnt matter to Gabriel. It made him feel wealthy by association. One evening on a walk through Central Park, they and Wings daughter, Ruth, sat in a clearing to enjoy a bottle of wine. She slips a pill into Gabriels cup without him batting an eye as they were out to enjoy themselves. Wings leaves abruptly. Ruth follows shortly. As night falls, he finally goes in search of his two friends. He approaches a big man cloaked in an animal skin who is armed with a large broad sword. Gabriel inquires about his friends and is aggressively attacked. In short order, he has this man on his knees crying for help, which he cant see. A woman comes to the fallen mans aid, but he mistakenly strikes her with his weapon.

The former marine awakens the next the morning and is arrested for the death of a woman not far from him. He is released on bail and is presented with the opportunity of taking the fall. After a short term in a psychiatric hospital, he would be recompensed with a rather large sum of money. Wings had arranged this to collect monies for himself and his daughter. His wife had gone through his fortune.

Gabriel had never dreamed of such machinations. His honor is at stake as that of his fellow war companions. He decides to make a stand and dons an expensive navy blue suit over his service automatic and grabs a dagger. On his way to Wings coop, he finds himself walking through Central Park. The intense clamoring of his men on his mind causes him to stumble and fall for an instant. He shakes it off but doesnt know who he is. In the waning daylight, he wanders through a sett
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Literary Hearthstones of Dixie【電子書籍】[ La Salle Corbell Pickett ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Literary Hearthstones of Dixie【電子書籍】[ La Salle Corbell Pickett ]

The fires still glow upon the hearthstones to which our southern writers in the olden days gave us friendly welcome. They are as bright to-day as when, "four feet on the fender," we talked with some gifted friend whose pen, dipped in the heart's blood of life, gave word to thoughts which had flamed within us and sought vainly to escape the walls of our being that they might go out to the world and fulfil their mission. They who built the shrines before which we offer our devotion have passed from the world of men, but the fires they kindled yet burn with fadeless light. To us who have dwelt in the same environment and found beauty in the same scenes that inspired them to eloquent expression of the thoughts, the loves, the hopes, and the aspirations which were our own as well as theirs, these writers of our South are living still and will live through the long procession of the years. In the garden of our lives they planted the flowers of poesy, of fable, and of romance. With the changes of the years those flowers may have passed into the realm of the old-fashioned, like the blossoms in Grandmother's garden, but are there any sweeter or more royally blooming than these? The lustre of our gifted ones is not dimmed by the passage of time, but in the rush of new books upon the world the readers of to-day lose sight of the volumes which wove threads of gold into the joys and sorrows of the generation now travelling the downward slope of life. Their starry radiance is sometimes lost to view in the electric flash of the present day. If these pages can in any slight way aid in keeping their memory bright they will have reached their highest aim. The poets of Dixie in war days tended the flames that glowed upon the altar of patriotism. Their lives were given to their country as truly as if their blood had crimsoned the sod of hard-fought fields. They gave of their best to our cause. Their bugle notes echo through the years, and the mournful tones of the dirges they sang over the grave of our dreams yet thrill our hearts. Before our eyes "The Conquered Banner" sorrowfully droops on its staff and "The Sword of Lee" flashes in the lines of our Poet-Priest.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Flying Cloud The True Story of America's Most Famous Clipper Ship and the Woman Who Guided Her【電子書籍】[ David W. Shaw ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Flying Cloud The True Story of America's Most Famous Clipper Ship and the Woman Who Guided Her【電子書籍】[ David W. Shaw ]

“Details the record-breaking 1851 New York-to-San Francisco voyages of the clipper ship Flying Cloud, focusing on its navigator, Eleanor Creesy.” ーLibrary Journal

In 1851, navigator Eleanor Creesy set sail on the maiden voyage of the clipper ship Flying Cloud, traveling from New York to San Francisco in only eighty-nine days. This swift passage set a world record that went unbroken for more than a century. Illustrated with original maps and charts as well as historical photographs, Shaw’s compelling narrative captures the drama of this thrilling adventure.

In a position almost unheard of for a woman in the mid-nineteenth century, Eleanor Creesy served as the ship’s navigator. With only the sun, planets, and stars to guide her, she brought Flying Cloud safely around Cape Horn at the height of a winter blizzard, faced storms, dodged shoals, and found her way through calms to make the swift passage possible. Along with her husband, Josiah, the ship’s captain, she sailed the mighty 3-masted clipper through 16,000 miles of the fiercest, most unpredictable oceans in the world.

Shaw vividly recreates nineteenth-century seafaring conditions and customs, for both the crew and the passengers who entrusted their fate to an untested ship. Including excerpts from letters and diaries of passengers, Shaw recounts Flying Cloud’s victory in the face of adversityーincluding sabotage, insubordination, and severe damage to the clipper’s mainmast that might have sunk her with all hands lost. But the ship triumphed and would ultimately sail the world. Flying Cloud brings to life, for the first time, the glory of one of America’s most important seafaring tales and one woman’s incredible achievements.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Staccato Notes of a Vanished Summer (from Literature and Life) Exploring Human Relationships in 19th Century America【電子書籍】[ William Dean Howells ]

In "Staccato Notes of a Vanished Summer," William Dean Howells deftly captures the ephemeral nature of time and memory through a blend of lyricism and realism. This reflective essay, part of his broader collection "Literature and Life," explores themes of nostalgia and the passage of seasons, presenting them with a unique narrative style that intermingles personal reminiscence and social commentary. Howells' prose evokes a vivid tableau of a summer long past, inviting readers to contemplate their own fleeting moments while situating the text within the American literary movement of the late 19th century, where the emphasis was on the intricacies of everyday life and the human experience. William Dean Howells, often regarded as the "Dean of American Letters," was a prominent figure in the Realist movement, emphasizing the importance of representing genuine experiences and emotions. His background as a literary critic and editor for the Atlantic Monthly gave him a profound understanding of American society and culture, which is vividly reflected in his work. Howells'?? personal experiences and acute observations of life during a time of social change deeply inform the themes presented in this text. "Staccato Notes of a Vanished Summer" is a must-read for those who appreciate introspective literature that reflects the tensions between memory and reality. Its exquisite prose invites readers to engage with the poignancy of lost times, making it an essential addition to the canon of American literary classics.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

She moves into a rustic shack and as the only white resident in the tiny community, she must forge a new path.

A new life beckons, but are her dreams worth abandoning the comfort and security she has back home?

This is a true story of Regina's wanderings in the Caribbean, her passion for sailing and the unexpected, of love lost and found, and her search for freedom.

Editorial Reviews:

Change of Course is an uplifting and courageous account of Regina's journey to find purpose in her life. Her honesty and integrity shine through as she literally sets sail for new horizons and takes us along for both an inspiring and emotional ride. - HELENE YOUNG, AUTHOR

Change of Course is a treasure trove of good features. Although the spectacular descriptions of the stunning sea and the sumptuous, multi-million dollar super yachts are certainly captivating and exciting, the deeply meditative comments lend yet another level to the story's intricate layers. Regina Petra Meyer engages the reader by exposing her deepest thoughts and sentiments about personal matters such as feeling a genuine sense of belonging and being entirely accepted as a white woman in Antigua, which has a mostly black population. Change of Course was both entertaining and educational for me, mostly because it displays ideas that I feel we all ought to embrace as people, such as seeing new cultures and living in a different environment, refusing to accept bullies, appreciating the beauty of nature, and much more. It's the kind of book you'd be happy to have in your collection. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Commands of Christ【電子書籍】[ Brother Eddie ]

I am the little boy who gave his loaves and fishes to Jesus, who in turn, fed a multitude with the young man's gift (John 6:9). In 2002, while studying "The Great Commission" passage in Matthew 28:18-20, the part where Jesus said, "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you" got my attention. I began to wonder, "How can we teach the nations to observe all things that Christ has commanded us unless we know how many things He has commanded us?" A prayerful search of the scriptures revealed twenty main commands of Christ. I then preached a series of messages based on those commands to my congregation in Oklahoma. Later, I taught these commands in conferences at Shillong and Kolkata, India in 2004 and in Manila, Philippines in 2005.
In January of 2011, God laid Jeremiah 33:3 on my heart: "Call to Me, and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know." For two years, I faithfully prayed that prayer daily, not knowing what the Lord had in mind. In January of 2013, I made a mission trip where I taught "The Commands of Christ" at a pastor's conference at Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, and at Nasik, India. One of the most important things that came out of this trip was a vision that the Lord wants "The Commands of Christ" made available on an international basis. My vision is for every pastor, in every nation, and in every language to have a copy of these commands.
I believe God's church is doing a good job of winning the lost and baptizing them, but we're not doing as good a job of making disciples of them. I believe knowing and teaching "The Commands of Christ" will help fulfill the discipleship part of "The Great Commission."
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

The Lodger, That Summer【電子書籍】[ Levi Huxton ]

It's a hot summer Down Under and everyone's got sex on the mind.

Eighteen year-old James has had a tough year. Having lost his mom to cancer and fought through grief to finish high school, he's now got secret desires to contend with. It's Christmas in Sydney, and he's ready to cast his worries aside for the summer holidays, a time of poolside parties, bush walks and ocean swims. But who is the seductive young man who's moved into the spare room?

In this steamy coming-of-age novel, James and the men around him discover transformative new desires with the power to up-end lives and, just possibly, unlock a brighter future.

This promising debut explicitly captures rites of passage in an era of fluid sexuality and elusive masculinity. In this kaleidoscopic novel, four men act on new sexual desires, and in doing so, clarify who they are, who they want to be, and perhaps even what they stand for. With an authentic voice born of lived experience, Levi Huxton deftly and movingly portrays how sexual desire can lead us to come of age and re-invent ourselves, however old we may be.

---

Finalist, 2022 Lambda Literary Awards

Winner, 2022 Passionate Plume Prize

"Levi Huxton offers a rare reading experience: erotic, sexy and intellectually engaging." - DNA Magazine, April 2022

9.5 out of 10 - "Erotic and honest, readers will be wrapped under the spell of the main character...The author capably creates emotional depth, making the conclusion especially impactful. A poignant and thoughtful storyteller." - The 2021 BookLife Prize

"The Lodger, That Summer is Mr. Huxton's first published work. While brief in length, it is intellectually challenging and shows great promise for the future." - Rainbow Book Reviews

"The Lodger, That Summer is a captivating, sexy, gritty, complex coming-of-age story. A perfect blend of fantasy and reality, Huxton's characters are flawed and intriguing, and his writing is smooth and addictive. I can't wait to see what he writes next." - Marley Valentine, author of Without You

"*This book is not a romance and it is not intended to be one. It is, however, many other things. It is a highly charged erotic tale, a coming out story, a coming-of-age story, and a sexual awakening, but it also drives deeper to target and expose those hidden parts of a man's soul.It is great to have found a new voice in author Levi Huxton with this debut book. His candor creates not only a melancholy spirit to parts of the story, but also an atmosphere that is tinged with tension, anticipation, and hope.*"- Joyfully Jay

"Refreshing and beautifully written, while gritty and erotic at the same time." - Reviews by Amos Lassen

"Lush, one of my top reads of 2021.
“Open Passage” is a poetic story about the esoteric quest of man in order to be liberated from fear and bondage. To search the road of truth and wisdom in order to find spiritual exits from the complete degradation of materialism, determining again the foundation of his existence. Finally, to give battle to find the road to hope, to dream, to have vision again.

“We are lost in the cycles of life, by accepting one-dimensionally our material foundation. By avoiding or forgetting also to traverse the road of our esoteric realization, we follow the armies of those with the earthen masks. Shores of the Polar Sea "A Narrative of Arctic Expedition"【電子書籍】[ Edward L. Moss ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Shores of the Polar Sea "A Narrative of Arctic Expedition"【電子書籍】[ Edward L. Moss ]

HE ARCTIC EXPEDITION of 1875 left England on 29th May, crossed the Atlantic to Davis Straits in a succession of storms, and entered the Arctic regions on 4th July. It sailed with orders to “attain the highest northern latitude, and, if possible, reach the Pole.”

In old times, when voyages were longer than in these days of steam, a nautical frolic on crossing “the Line” helped to break the monotony of many a tedious passage. This time-honoured custom is slowly becoming a thing of the past. When it is gone, there will be little in sea or sky to make crossing the Equator in any way remarkable. The Tropic Zones are no better defined, and one can sail into or out of them without experiencing a sin-gle impressive sensation. But the Arctic Circle has obvious boundaries. A conspicuous change in the ordinary habits of nature warns the traveller that he is leaving the hospitable realms of earth behind him, and entering a region full of new experiences. Here familiar light and darkness cease to alternate, morning and evening no longer make the day, and in proportion as the latitude increases, day and night become mere figures of speech.

While our two ships steamed northward along the west shores of Greenland, the novel charm of constant daylight was felt by every one. We all had our own ideas of what Arctic summer would be like, but ideas drawn from books rarely remain unchanged when brought face to face with reality. Although the passage into perpetual day was of course gradual, yet it was quite rapid enough to upset all regular habits.

Most of us observed sadly irregular hours, but one energetic fellow-voyager, bent on making the most of his opportunities, stopped up for three days at a stretch.

Our squadron consisted of H.M.SS. “Alert,” “Discovery,” and “Valorous,” the latter vessel accompanying the Expedition as far as Disco, for the purpose of helping it so far northwards with its heavy stock of three years’ provisions and fuel. On entering Davis Straits no one of the ships had the least idea where the others were.

They had been separated in a cyclone on 13th June, and had crossed the Atlantic independently. Fortunately, how-ever, all three turned up almost simultaneously off the west coast of Greenland. Four days before crossing the Arctic Circle, the “Alert” and “Discovery” met under the rugged coast near Godhaab.

As the ships approached, each anxiously scanned the other to see what damage had been done by the Atlantic storms. Boats soon passed from ship to ship, and it was amusing to note how both men and officers of either ship (the writer included) already placed the firmest faith in their own vessel, and underrated the seaworthiness of her consort.

It was positively quite disappointing to find that the “Discovery’s” spars were all right, and that she, like ourselves, had lost but one boat. Of course we congratulated each other on our good fortune; and good fortune it was, for our light, beautifully built boats could not be replaced, and few ships, heavily laden both below and on deck as ours were, would have passed through such weather without more serious loss.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

“This is a beautiful farewell to two extraordinary people. It enthralled and moved me, and it will move and enthrall anyone who has ever entered the glorious literary world of Gabriel Garc?a M?rquez.”ーSalman Rushdie

“In A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes Rodrigo Garcia finds the words that cannot be said, the moments that signal all that is possible to know about the passage from life to death, from what love brings and the loss it leaves. With details as rich as any giant biography, you will find yourself grieving as you read, grateful for the profound art that remains a part of our cultural heritage.”ーWalter Mosley, New York Times bestselling author of Down the River Unto the Sea

“An intensely personal reflection on [Garcia's] father's legacy and his family bonds, tender in its treatment and stirring in its brevity.”ーBooklist (starred review)

The son of one of the greatest writers of our timeーNobel Prize winner and internationally bestselling icon Gabriel Garc?a M?rquezーremembers his beloved father and mother in this tender memoir about love and loss.

In March 2014, Gabriel Garc?a M?rquez, one of the most acclaimed writers of the twentieth century, came down with a cold. The woman who had been beside him for more than fifty years, his wife Mercedes Barcha, was not hopeful; her husband, affectionately known as “Gabo,” was then nearly 87 and battling dementia. I don't think we'll get out of this one, she told their son Rodrigo.

Hearing his mother’s words, Rodrigo wondered, “Is this how the end begins?” To make sense of events as they unfolded, he began to write the story of Garc?a M?rquez’s final days. The result is this intimate and honest account that not only contemplates his father’s mortality but reveals his remarkable humanity.

Both an illuminating memoir and a heartbreaking work of reportage, A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes transforms this towering genius from literary creator to protagonist, and paints a rich and revelatory portrait of a family coping with loss. At its center is a man at his most vulnerable, whose wry humor shines even as his lucidity wanes. Gabo savors affection and attention from those in his orbit, but wrestles with what he will loseーand what is already lost. Throughout his final journey is the charismatic Mercedes, his constant companion and the creative muse who was one of the foremost influences on Gabo’s life and his art.

Bittersweet and insightful, surprising and powerful, A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes celebrates the formidable legacy of Rodrigo’s parents, offering an unprecedented look at the private family life of a literary giant. It is at once a gift to Gabriel Garc?a M?rquez’s readers worldwide, and a grand tribute from a writer who knew him well.

“You read this short memoir with a feeling of deep gratitude. Yes, it is a moving homage by a son to his extraordinary parents, but also much more: it is a revelation of the hidden corners of a fascinating life. A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes is generous, unsentimental and wise.” ーJuan Gabriel V?squez, author of The Sound of Things Falling

“A warm homage filled with both fond and painful memories.” ーKirkus

"Garcia’s limpid prose gazes calmly at death, registering pain but not being overcome by it . . . the result is a moving eulogy that will captivate fans of the literary lion." ー Publishers Weekly
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Welcome to the Big Empty, the world after the Flashback ... a world in which most the population has vanished and where dinosaurs roam freely. You can survive here, if you're lucky, and if you're not in the wrong place at the wrong time--which is everywhere and all the time. But what you'll never do is remain the same--for this is a world whose very purpose is to change you: for better or for worse. So take a deep dive into these loosely connected tales of the Dinosaur Apocalypse (each of which can be read individually or as a part of the greater saga): tales of wonder and terror, death and survival, blood ... and beauty. Do it today ... before the apocalypse comes.

* * *

"You're a fool, Nick Callahan. A fool. But I suppose you already knew that."

I allowed my hand to drop before plunking down in the fir needles and just staring into space. "There was nothing. I saw nothing. Itーit was like he didn't even exist."

She sat down next to me and exhaled, tiredly.

"He's an animalーwhat did you expect?" She picked up my glove and offered it to me, but I didn't take it. "You said it yourself; it's like they see memories. The eyes. I don't imagine a dog has a particularly long one. Do you?"

I sighed. All I knew for certain was that I felt numb and more than a little tired. "I don't know. I don't know what I expected. Or what I was looking for. An incident, maybe. Some kind of clue."

She laid her head on my shoulder and stared at nothing, same as me. "What kind? A clue to what?"

"That's just itーI don't know. A clue to what might wake him up, I guess. Something I could say. Something that was important to him."

"His butt was important to him," she said. "A source of endless fascination."

I had to smile.

That's when it happened. That's when he yelped, ever so slightly, and his paw twitched.

I looked at Lisa and she looked back. And then my hand was on him and we were runningーPuck and Iーdown cobblestone lanes lined with streetlamps and through pools of foggy light; through tides of rusted Maple leaves, which leapt and swirled as we passed.

"What is it?" I heard Lisa say, her voice growing smaller, more distant. "What do you see?"

I turned to look at Puck as we ran and saw his tongue loll and his eyes shiftーas though he wanted to look behind himselfーbehind usーbut didn't dare.

"Fear," I said. "Confusion." An image entered my mind of a dug passage beneath the rear wall of the T.J. Maxx; of the turkey-like thing crawling through it with Puck hot on its heels. "He escaped from beneath the wall and now he's lost somewhere in the fog. And he's terrified … but of what I don't know. It's almost likeーwait a minute. Wait a minute." I looked behind himーhaving heard something huffing and snortingーand saw a fully-grown therapod dinosaur (colored orange and black, like a Gila monster) bounding after us in the dark, gaining rapidly. "There's something comingーsome kind of predator. An allosaur, I think. Whatever it is, it's closing, and I mean fast."
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

A Pinch of Moonlight【電子書籍】[ Leo Greene ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Pinch of Moonlight【電子書籍】[ Leo Greene ]

Demi-Lee Jenkins is a British teen whose only real talents are stubbornness, whistling, and a hint of magical ability. Blackbird is the rogue male fairy who adopted Demi as his 'little friend' when she was seven. A Pinch of Moonlight tells their intertwined stories, as they find themselves responsible for the fate of the magical realm of Annwn.
In unjust exile from Annwn, Blackbird is searching for Demi-lee and encounters her at midnight on the summer solstice. In the company of two friends, Vicky and Heledd, Demi-Lee accidentally cast her first spell and awakens the spirit of Aelwen, her witchy distant ancestor. Blackbird uses the situation to worm his way back into Demi's life, hiding the fact that he's in exile from Annwn and has lost all his magic powers. Blackbird and Aelwen offer to mentor Demi and develop her magic powers.
Heledd has just finished a degree in ancient Welsh literature, and already has expertise in myths and legends, so she's thrilled to have magical beings to help her with her research. Demi's cousin Vicky is less thrilled - as a sceptic with a degree in IT, it's a real shock to discover the world is less rational than she thought. Vicky is deeply distrustful of Blackbird, and when she saves him from hypothermia, he reveals the truth of his situation.
There is discrimination against fairies in Annwn, and Tefyn, the elfish First Citizen, shocked many when he took the fairy Pefryn (Blackbird's cousin) as his wife. Hafren, Chancellor of Annwn, loathes all fairies, but especially those such as Blackbird or Pefryn who aim for a Place in society.
Hafren manipulated Tefyn into going on a quest to earth, then made Tefyn believe Pefryn had cheated on him with Blackbird. During the ensuing fight, Tefyn broke Blackbird's wings and Blackbird permanently injured Tefyn with a blast of magic. Tefyn had Blackbird's wings removed with iron, neutralising the fairy's magic.
Although Tefyn soon realised Blackbird was innocent, it's high treason for a fairy to injure an elf, so Blackbird was exiled. However, there's a chance that Blackbird can make things right, if he can discover the magic to heal Tefyn. In Annwn, a damaged man cannot rule, and Hafren is using Tefyn's disability in an attempt to seize power.
The humans, Aelwen (now in a hybrid human/plant body) and Blackbird work together to find a spell to allow Blackbird to return to Annwn, and another to let him and Tefyn heal each other. The ritual is performed at the next full moon, but it doesn't work until Demi-Lee goes with him, to supply the essential spark of magic.
Once in Annwn, Blackbird is reunited with Pefryn, who is in internal exile, but he's soon captured by his enemies and left tied up and beaten outside the city gates. Pefryn takes Demi-Lee to rescue him, but Tefyn has got there first and taken Blackbird to the healers. Hafren is lying in wait for Demi-Lee and tricks her into Walking the Walk, a dangerous right of passage for which she's totally unprepared. Demi could just leave Annwn the way she came, but the nixies will disown her and Blackbird, leaving them trapped forever in their respective realms, never to meet again.
Demi successfully walks the walk, but her magic now burns like nuclear fuel, and there's a risk she may explode. Tefyn is healed, and publicly reclaims Blackbird and Pefryn. Blackbird's magic is restored, and Hafren is not just thwarted but left almost powerless after a spell backfires on him. This isn't the end though - both Demi-Lee and Vicky have fallen for Blackbird, and Hafren's supporters are determined to avenge him. Volume two continues the story...
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Synopsis of the Journey.ーCrossing the Continent.ーA Great Midland City.ーUtah and the Mormons.ーThe Sierra Nevada.ーSan Francisco.ーA Herd of Sea-Lions.ーPossibilities of California.ーThe Love of Flowers.ーPublic School System.ーExcursion to the Yosemite.ーAn Indian Stronghold.ーDescription of the Valley.ーPassage of the Mountains.ーCaught in a Snow-Storm.ーA Forest of Feathers.ーThe Mammoth Trees of California.ーPassing the Golden Gate.ーVoyage across the Pacific.ーA Lost Day. On the morning of September 16, 1882, four individuals, two of whom were ladies and two gentlemen, comparative strangers to each other, met at the Fitchburg depot in Boston, drawn together by the common purpose of a trip round the world. Adding the conductor, Mr. Gno. Dattari, an intelligent and experienced courier, the little party numbered five persons. The latter individual is attached to the traveling agency of Thomas Cook & Son, London, the house undertaking, for the sum of two thousand dollars each, to pay all transportation and board bills in accordance with a very comprehensive itinerary. This embraced the passage across the continent of America and the Pacific Ocean to Japan, with a month of residence and travel in that country; thence to China and up the Pearl River to Canton; a week in Hong Kong; a thousand-mile voyage down the China Sea to the chief ports of the Malacca Straits; across the Indian Ocean to the Island of Ceylon, with a week for excursions therein; thence to India, with a liberal exploration of its principal cities, including a visit to the Himalayas in the extreme north; through the Sea of Arabia, the Straits of Babelmandeb, and the Red Sea to Egypt, Cairo, and Alexandria; through the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean to Italy, Malta, Gibraltar, France, and England. A reasonable length of time was allowed for each section of the route, including a voyage across the Atlantic to the starting-point. Any divergence from the prescribed route was to be at an additional charge, according to expenses incurred. The money was paid at the outset, and the agreement on both sides fulfilled to the entire satisfaction of all concerned. Thus much it has seemed well to premise for the information of the reader who proposes to follow our course due west, as presented in these pen-and-ink sketches of many lands. It should also be mentioned that the season of the year had been judiciously chosen, so as to bring us into each country at the most favorable period for its healthful and agreeable enjoyment, a calculation which is imperative for any one contemplating a journey of this character. Otherwise, the intense heat of the tropics, as well as the Arctic chills of the north, may render such a trip a hardship rather than a season of pleasure. The first day's experience served to acquaint the little party with each other, and no possible association can effect this so rapidly as traveling together, where individuals necessarily become inseparable, and where fixed traits of character must inevitably exhibit themselves. Mr. Mーー and his daughter, as also the author of these notes, were Bostonians; the fourth person being a Miss Dーー, of Yorkshire, England, who came hither to make the long circuit of the globe. Even American parlor-cars, which embrace as much of domestic comfort as is compatible with their legitimate purpose, could not prevent our being somewhat fatigued by an unbroken journey of over five hundred miles, when we reached Niagara Falls at two o'clock in the morning. And yet the day seemed short by reason of the varied and beautiful scenery of the Hoosac Tunnel route, particularly in the region of the Deerfield Valley, and also west of the Massachusetts state line. The abundant foliage was in its autumnal prime, not yet having been touched by the wand of the Frost King, while the teeming fields gave evidence both of fertility of soil and skilled cultivation. The neat farm-houses were ornamented by creeping vines, and tiny flower-gardens in their fronts. Tall conical haystacks flanked the spacious, well-filled barns; big yellow pumpkins dotted the half-cleared cornfields; and handsome groups of cattle quietly ruminated in the pastures. A picturesque line of beehives, half a dozen happy children at play before the house door, and the sturdy master of the thrifty scene, leaning over the fence to exchange pleasant words with a passing neighbor on horseback, were frequent rural pictures, which were afterwards contrasted with those of other countries
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
