The ghost of Jean Valjean【電子書籍】[ Lorenzo di Gaio ]

This text can be considered a fantastic work, a thriller, or a fairy tale. Why, it all depends on our reading grid. A social novel, or a melodrama without music. It's a drama with a popular tone where twists and turns accumulate that no one expects. It is a modern thriller, the suspense will surprise the reader.

Antonio is an Italian immigrant, he arrived in France 30 years ago, he is around fifty years old. It comes from Mezzo, southern Italy. She misses him, her heart is still there, France is not a choice, but a necessity.

He lives in the Paris suburbs, in Montreuil, in Seine Saint-Denis. He works in the sewer service of the city of Paris, fixed-term employment contracts of six months, he no longer counts them. Over the past 20 years, he has reached the milestone of forty contracts.

He is a hero in spite of himself, he does not have the makings, he is a heartless individual, he reveals empathy towards those who have nothing. He's not a brawny guy with no brains.

Every morning, he goes to Paris by metro, in the eleventh arrondissement of Paris. Historic Paris opens the doors to him. The Faubourg Saint-Antoine, the Place de la Bastille, the Petite and Grande Roquette and the Boulevard de M?nilmontant belong to the world, these places are linked to history. The storming of the Bastille symbolizes the fall of arbitrariness, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

No matter where he goes, the past winks at him, other names continue the wonder, the cemetery of P?re Lachaise, Beaubourg, the marsh. These are emblematic places of the capital.

But the story takes place underground. It is the underground city without Paris of cockroaches, rats, bad smells, the sun is absent, a pale light illuminates the walls. Jean Valjean crossed it. Here, we are not talking about the pedestrianization of the capital.

At sunrise, at the Square de la Roquette, he meets a homeless person, it's a woman, her name is Marcelle. Life across the street has faded its shine, it is a flower that has lost its beauty. His dull, laughterless face engenders pity. He chats with her about the passage of time. He places a loaf of bread next to her without saying a word, and leaves.

His job consists of monitoring, repairing the pipes, maintaining the sewers, the bad smell bothers him, in the evening, he takes the air, he breathes. The Parisian air allows it to chase away the bad odors of this underground city. He speaks of an abyss every time he descends.

One day, he sees a shadow, he convinces himself that it is the ghost of Jean Valjean, Victor Hugo wrote that he was mayor of Montreuil. The shadow drags a paw, Jean Valjean too.

Combining psychology, religion, myth, and literature, Harry Moody - in the bestselling tradition of Joseph Campbell, Thomas Moore, and Scott Peck - charts the passages of countless individuals across the country who have lived through these five spiritual stages, and recounts their lessons and experiences. Moreover, he explores their confrontation with the question of meaning in their lives and the experiences the five stages offered them - from a return to traditional religion to an embrace of mysticism to the desire simply to do community service.

The Goddess: A Demon【電子書籍】[ Richard Marsh ]

I was sure that I had seen Edwin Lawrence juggle with the pack. As I lay there wide awake in bed it all came back to me. I wondered how I could have been such an unspeakable idiot. We had dined together at the Trocadero; then we had gone on to the Empire. The big music hall was packed with people, the heat was insufferable. “Let’s get out of this,” suggested Lawrence, almost as soon as we were in. “This crush, in this atmosphere, is not to be borne.” I agreed with him. We left. “Come into my place for an hour,” he said. We both lived in Imperial Mansions, on the same floor. His number was 64, mine was 79. You went out of his door, along the passage, round the corner to the rightーthe second door on the right was mine. I went in with him. “What do you say to a little gamble?” he asked. “It will be better than nothing.” I agreed. We had a little gambleーat first for trivial stakes. I am an abstemious man. I had already drunk more than I was accustomed to. At his invitation I drank still more. We increased the stakes. I really do not know from whom the suggestion came, I know that I did not object. I had lost all my ready money. I kept on losing. He was dotting down, on a piece of paper, the extent of my indebtedness. Presently, when he announced the sum total, I was amazed to learn that it was very much more than I imaginedーactually nearly a thousand pounds. On the instant I was wide awake. “Nine hundred and forty pounds, Lawrence! It can’t be as much as that!” “My dear chap, here are the figures; look for yourself.” He handed me the piece of paper. His manner of arranging the several amounts I found more than a little vague, but as I had been so foolish as not to have kept count of them myself, I was hardly in a position to dispute their accuracy; and, added together, they certainly did come to the sum he stated. Still I felt persuaded that there was a mistake somewhere, though in what it consisted I was unable at the moment to perceive. “Look here,” he said. “Be a sportsman for once in your life! I’ll give you a chanceーI’ll cut you double or quits.” I did not want to. I would have very much rather not. Gambling on such a scale was altogether out of my way. But he urged me, and I yielded; I don’t know why. I must have been very much more under the influence of drink than I imagined. We cut. I cut firstーthe knave of diamonds. As it was to be highest, not a bad card. I watched him as he cut, and saw that he dropped at least one card from the lot which he picked up; and that after he had had an opportunity of getting a shrewd guess at its value. The card which he faced was the queen of diamonds, exclaiming as he did so: “That does you!” “But that was not the card which you originally cutーyou dropped one.” “I dropped one! What do you mean? I have not the slightest notion of having done anything of the kind, and, anyhow, it must have been by the sheerest accident. What are you looking at me like that for? Don’t lose your temper because you happen to have lost.” The insinuation was as gratuitous as it was uncalled for. There was not the slightest danger of my losing my temper; but that I was right in what I had said I felt assured. But then the card might have been dropped by accident, and he might not have noticed what had happened. And, anyhow, in face of the fact that I had been with the man on terms of intimacy, and had never before had cause to suspect him of anything in the least dishonourable, having regard to his explicit denial, it was a delicate position to persist in. I got up from my chair, conceding the point. “That makes eighteen hundred and eighty pounds you owe me. My sympathy, Ferguson; better luck next time.” I mentally resolved that I would not play cards again with Edwin Lawrenceーat any rate, when we two were alone.

London's Heart: A Novel【電子書籍】[ Benjamin Leopold Farjeon ]

The shop has its public entrance for customers, and its private entrance for the residents of the house--so private indeed, so circumscribed and squeezed up, that scarcely one out of fifty passers-by would know that it was there; and that one, seeing it by merest chance, might well be lost in wonder at the perplexing idea of a stout man struggling through the narrow passage into which the mockery of a door must necessarily open. Three bell-handles display themselves on each side of the door to snare and entrap the uninitiated; a goggle-eyed knocker (with a face so hideous that babies have gone into convulsions at the sight of it) also adds to the entanglement of ideas. For, knowing that the house contains many inhabitants who have no connection with each other, and some of whom may indeed be at variance, the uninitiated brings confusion upon himself by ringing the wrong bell or knocking the wrong knock. A woman, who lodged somewhere in the vicinity of the coal-cellar, was often the occasion of much distress to the knockers and ringers. This woman, who always made her appearance fresh from the washing-tub, and who came up-stairs invariably wiping her wet arms upon her apron, was afflicted with the perpetual conviction that a ring or a knock, whether single, or double, or treble, was certainly intended for her; and as her temper was none of the sweetest, unpleasant scenes occurred. Many a box on the ears did youthful knockers and ringers receive from the damp hands of the disappointed woman, and many an angry mother would make her appearance in the passage a few minutes afterwards and exchange shrill civilities with the bad-tempered castigator. Sometimes these angry mothers would go almost into hysterics because the woman below declined to comply with such invitations as, "Come up, and I'll show yer!" or, "Come up, and I'll scratch yer eyes out for yer!" or, "What d'yer mean by slappin' my boy Billy about on the 'ead, which was weak from a babby? What d'yer mean by it, yer minx?--What d'yer mean?" (This last fortissimo.) "Come up, and I'll tear the 'air out of yer 'ead!" After which challenges and defiances the angry mothers, with very white faces, would issue into the street, and form the centres of little knots of female neighbours only too willing to discuss the matter and express their opinions. A facetious person, who had called several times at the house, and who was never able to solve the mystery of the bells, once hit upon what he conceived to be a happy idea. He gave a postman's knock; but the rush of eager feet from all parts of the house, and the glare of angry faces that met his smiling one when the door was opened, were sufficient warnings to him never to try it again; and he never did. In the front room of the first floor of this house sits an old man, working in somewhat idle fashion on a few wooden castors or wheels. It is Saturday on a summer evening in June. The window is open; on the sill are two flower-pots. The room, which is a humble one, is very clean and tidy, and there are evidences of comfort, even of refinement about it, humble as it is. Some cheap graceful ornaments are on the mantelshelf: a pair of shells; a shepherd and a shepherdess, condemned by the exigencies of art to live apart from each other, notwithstanding their languishing looks; and, in the centre of the mantelshelf, a vase with two of yesterday's roses in it. These roses, as they are placed in the vase, touch the photograph of a young girl, which hangs in a frame above them. She is pretty and fresh-looking, and there is a smile upon her face which induces gladness in the beholder: as spring flowers and bright skies do. On either side of the portrait, hung on a higher level, is a picture of the same young girl, disguised. On the right-hand side of the mantelshelf she is dressed in a Spanish costume; on her shoulders is a black-lace shawl arranged with the most charming negligence; and as she looks at you from behind a fan, you catch just a glimpse of laughing eyes.

Westminster Abbey【電子書籍】[ Mrs. A. Murray Smith ]

Very rarely, however, in modern days has the church or the college been honoured with a visit from the reigning sovereign in propri? person?. At great functions, such as public funerals, the heir-apparent is occasionally present, but the Crown is usually represented by a Court official, and the Dean's stall, which is only vacated for the reigning king or queen, has been occupied on very rare occasions in the last hundred years. The Latin play acted by the Westminster scholars every winter term, was formerly a gala occasion on which royalty used often to be present, but the old custom was gradually dropped. In the year 1903, for the first time within the memory of this generation, a royal person, H.R.H. the Duchess of Argyll, was present at the performance. There are several points of view whence the group of buildings formed by the Abbey, St. Margaret's Church, Westminster Hall, and the Houses of Parliament, can be seen above the roofs of the houses, or without any intervening obstruction. The foreigner who arrives at Charing Cross first sees Westminster from the railway bridge, and gets another and a nearer aspect as he reaches the bottom of Whitehall. Now that passenger-steamers ply once again upon the river, many persons are familiar with the unrivalled water approach, but no longer does the wayfarer coming from the south or east hire a boat from the Lambeth side, and thus follow the traditional route taken by St. Peter, when he came to consecrate the original church on Thorneye. Although the Roman road, which led from north to south of England, and crossed the river here, is entirely lost sight of in London, the intending visitor will be well advised if he walk to the Abbey by the parks. From the bridge over the Serpentine he gets a distant view, and all the way, by Green Park and St. James's, there are glimpses of the Westminster Towers. At present, in the temporary absence of any building where the old aquarium used to be, he has but to cross Birdcage Walk, take the old Cockpit passage into Queen Anne's Gate, and from Dartmouth Street, just across the way, he will see a magnificent view of the Abbey Church with her small daughter, St Margaret, by her side. As he approaches nearer, down Tothill Street, the ugly Western Towers, which we owe in the first instance to Wren's incapacity to understand Gothic architecture, in the second to his successor Hawkesmore's want of taste in the execution, become too prominent.
In the shadows of a massive river, hidden by the mists of time, there existed a village long forgotten by the outside world. The cursed village remained in peace, its existence only known to those who resided within it's boundaries.

But peace is a fragile thing, easily destroyed, and for the cursed village, it came in the form of seven strangers whose purpose no one knows - fortune, redemption, or perhaps something more sinister.

Their arrival awakens something that they didn't even anticipate. Whispering Veins, The Heartbeat of Mine【電子書籍】[ Maham Tariq ]

"Echoes of the Deep" plunges into the heart of the Blackwood Mine, a labyrinth of shadowed tunnels and whispering coal seams. The mine, more than just a workplace, is a living entity, permeated with the echoes of past tragedies and the unsettling presence of the "Whispering Veins." Young, ambitious Caleb, driven by a desire to prove his worth, disregards the seasoned miners' warnings, venturing deeper into the mine's treacherous depths.

His bravado shatters when a creeping, insidious fire engulfs the tunnels, transforming the familiar darkness into a suffocating nightmare. The whispers, once dismissed as mere drafts, escalate into a chilling chorus of moans, hinting at a presence beyond the physical realm. Trapped and disoriented, Caleb encounters Old Silas, a miner whose eyes reflect the mine's somber history. Silas, rather than succumbing to panic, imparts a profound lesson: escape isn't always physical; it's about finding peace within the chaos.

The narrative weaves a tapestry of suspense and horror, blurring the lines between reality and the spectral. The mine becomes a character, its depths holding secrets and its whispers carrying the weight of lost souls. The fire, a manifestation of the earth's raw power, forces the characters to confront their mortality and the fragility of their existence.

Yet, amidst the terror, a glimmer of hope persists. Silas's haunting lullaby, a testament to resilience and acceptance, provides a counterpoint to the encroaching darkness. A miraculous escape, facilitated by a hidden passage revealed by the shifting earth, offers a resolution that is both poignant and hopeful.

"Echoes of the Deep" explores themes of fear, acceptance, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. It's a story that delves into the psychological impact of isolation and the profound connection between humanity and the earth. The narrative leaves the reader with a lingering sense of unease, but also with a renewed appreciation for the resilience of the human spirit and the delicate balance between man and the forces of nature.

The Re in Refuge Essays【電子書籍】[ Adrianne Kalfopoulou ]

The re in refuge is a collection of linked essays that investigate ideas of refuge, broadly defined, from the intimacies of romance to the promises of the nation state.

Written over the span of a decade, the collection shapes experiences and events that interrogate their larger political and social contexts. The emerging European refugee crisis, yet to become headline news, frames the opening essays, with stories of those lost in their passage across the Mediterranean. In 2014 Italy and the United Kingdom ended funding for naval rescue operations in the Mediterranean Sea, and the influx of refugees into Greece reconfigures some of Athens' neighborhoods. A once abandoned school building becomes a squat where Kalfopoulou and other volunteers engage with refugee communities that include families from Afghanistan, Syria, and Kurdistan. As Kalfopoulou notes in “The Parts Don’t Add Up” a visual essay, “Embedded in the word refugee is refuge,” suggesting that the vectors of shelter have as much to do with what one carries of culture and place as they are about a tangible home.

The Poison Belt【電子書籍】[ Arthur Conan Doyle ]

The Poison Belt was the second story, a novella, that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote about Professor Challenger. Written in 1913, roughly a year before the outbreak of World War I, much of it takes place in a single room in Challenger's house in Sussex ? rather oddly, given that it follows The Lost World, a story set largely outdoors in the wilds of South America. This would be the last story written about Challenger until the 1920s, by which time Doyle's spiritualist beliefs had begun to influence his writing. Challenger sends telegrams asking his three companions from The Lost World ー Edward Malone, Lord John Roxton, and Professor Summerlee ? to join him at his home outside London, and instructs each of them to 'bring oxygen'. On arrival they are ushered into a sealed room, along with Challenger and his wife. In the course of his researches into various phenomena, Challenger has predicted that the Earth is moving into a belt of poisonous ether which, based on its effect on the people of Sumatra earlier in the day, he expects to stifle humanity. Challenger seals them in the room with cylinders of oxygen, which he (correctly) believes will counter the effect of the ether. The five wait out the Earth's passage through the poison belt as they watch the world outside die and machines run amok. (According to Victorian values ? or to Doyle's understanding of them ? Challenger's servants are left outside the sealed room, and they continue to perform their duties until the ether overtakes them.) Finally, the last of the oxygen cylinders is emptied, and they open a window, ready to face death. To their surprise, they do not die, and conclude the Earth has now passed through the poison belt.

A Life in the Saddle is an expansion on the account Rev. Davie Hogan left of his own life, which he entitled: Autobiography of David Hogan (1811-1899).

This is Part 3 of 4

The author will quote directly from this work in the following format, as in the following opening passage:

I propose on this the 16th day of February A.D. 1899, in the 88th year of my life, to continue the work of writing a biographic sketch of my life, from a very imperfect, or partially kept diary. I will here state, this work is only intended as a manuscript for the information of my children, grandchildren, and those who in the future may be interested in the history this writing may afford. I have tried to keep as far from self-laudation as possible. I therefore pray that whosoever may consult or read it, if they think they see a spirit of exultation, they will account for it, on other grounds than intention of the writer.

The rest of the text is comprised of quotes from other sources and background information researched and compiled by the author. Davie wrote for an audience with a base of shared experience and knowledge mostly lost to contemporary readers. The author has attempted to fill out Hogan's often terse or detail lacking account with the wealth of information on history, family members, and local color his ancestor neglected to include. By the way, the author, Brian Hogan, is Rev. Hogan's third great grandnephew.

Mr. Rogers was a man of prompt action, for the health of those dear to him was his first consideration. The consequence was that after rapidly making his arrangements, and providing the necessaries for his new home, he took passage to Durban, arrived there in safety with his wife, two sons, and Dennis; then made his way to Maritzburg; and soon after he had purchased an extensive tract of land, and a pleasantly situated home, with garden in full perfection, the owner of which, having made money in the colony, wished to retire to England. Here for a time Mrs Rogers had seemed better, and undoubtedly her life was considerably prolonged. Gardening, farming, and a little hunting formed the occupations of the father and sons, and for a time all was happiness in the sunny far-off home. Then the much-dreaded day came, and they were left to mourn for a tender wife and mother, whose loss was irreparable. Richard, who partook greatly of his mother’s nature, was, like his father, completely prostrated by the terrible loss; and though time somewhat assuaged his grief, he seemed to have gone back in his health, and lost the way he had made up since he left England, and he had become so weak and delicate that Mr Rogers had consulted the doctor, who from time to time visited their far-off home.

Heart of Darkness【電子書籍】[ Joseph Conrad ]

Heart of Darkness (1899) is a short novel by Joseph Conrad, written as a frame narrative, about Charles Marlow's life as an ivory transporter down the Congo River in Central Africa. The river is "a mighty big river, that you could see on the map, resembling an immense snake uncoiled, with its head in the sea, its body at rest curving afar over a vast country, and its tail lost in the depths of the land." In the course of his travel in central Africa, Marlow becomes obsessed with Mr. Kurtz. The story is a complex exploration of the attitudes people hold on what constitutes a barbarian versus a civilized society and the attitudes on colonialism and racism that were part and parcel of European imperialism. Originally published as a three-part serial story, in Blackwood's Magazine, the novella Heart of Darkness has been variously published and translated into many languages. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Heart of Darkness as the sixty-seventh of the hundred best novels in English of the twentieth century. Short Summary Aboard the Nellie, anchored in the River Thames near Gravesend, England, Charles Marlow tells his fellow sailors about the events that led to his appointment as captain of a river-steamboat for an ivory trading company. He describes his passage on ships to the wilderness to the Company's station, which strikes Marlow as a scene of devastation: disorganized, machinery parts here and there, periodic demolition explosions, weakened native black men who have been demoralized, in chains, literally being worked to death, and strolling behind them a white Company man in a uniform carrying a rifle. At this station Marlow meets the Company's chief accountant who tells him of a Mr. Kurtz, and explains that Kurtz is a first-class agent.

The Scourge of God: The Lives and Legacies of Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan【電子書籍】[ Charles River Editors ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Scourge of God: The Lives and Legacies of Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan【電子書籍】[ Charles River Editors ]

*Includes maps of Genghis Khan's and Attila's empires and pictures depicting the two men and other important people and places in their lives.*Discusses legends and controversies surrounding the lives, deaths, and legacies of Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan.*Includes a Bibliography of each man for further reading.*Includes a Table of Contents. Attila, Emperor of the Hunnic Empire and thus most commonly known as Attila the Hun, is an idiosyncratic figure who has become more myth than man, not least because much of his life is shrouded in mystery. Perhaps the most famous barbarian in history, Attila was the lord of a vast empire spanning two continents and was often referred to as the Scourge of God, but he is best remembered for what he did not conquer. Though he seemingly had Rome at his mercy in 452, he ultimately decided not to sack the Eternal City, and a year later he had suffered a mysterious death. What is known about Attila came mostly from Priscus, a guest of his court who wrote several books about Attilas life in Greek. Unfortunately, much of that work was lost to history, but not before the ancient writer Jordanes relied on it to write his own overexaggerated account of Attilas life. And like their leader, the Huns themselves are an instantly recognizable name with mysterious origins; most of what is known about the Huns came from Chinese sources thousands of miles and an entire continent away from Italy. Naturally, the dearth of information and the passage of time have allowed myths and legends to fill in the most important details of Attilas life. Why did a man at war with the Roman Empire for so long decide not to sack Rome in 452? Did a meeting with Pope Leo the Great convince him to spare the capital of the Western half of the empire? Did a vision from St. Peter induce Attila to convert to Christianity? Was Attila murdered by his new bride? Many authors and chroniclers have provided many answers to the many questions, but the lack of answers has allowed Attila to become the face of ancient barbarity and the embodiment of the furious nomadic conqueror. In a world fascinated by men like Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar, Genghis Khan is one of historys greatest and most famous conquerors. No man, before or since, has ever started with so little and gone on to achieve so much. From a noble family but raised in poverty that drove him to the brink of starvation, Genghis Khan rose to control the second-largest empire the world has ever known (the largest being, arguably, the British Empire of the 18th and 19th centuries), and easily the largest empire conquered by a single man. And while many empires disintegrate upon the death of an emperor, like Attilas, Genghis Khans empire endured and was actually enlarged by his successors, who went on to establish dynasties that in some cases lasted for centuries.Though history is usually written by the victors, the lack of a particularly strong writing tradition from the Mongols ensured that history was largely written by those who Genghis Khan vanquished. Because of this, Genghis Khans portrayal in the West and the Middle East has been extraordinarily (and in many ways unfairly) negative for centuries, at least until recent revisions to the historical record. He was far more complex than the mere brute that his negative portrayals indicate. The Scourge of God discusses the facts, myths, and legends surrounding the lives, deaths and conquests of Attila and Genghis Khan, examining the historical record and the way in which their legacies were shaped, all in an attempt to separate fact from fiction. Along with pictures and bibliographies, you will learn about Attila and Genghis like never before.

The principles of insurance, they tell us, were not hidden from our Anglo-Saxon forefathers. How anybody had the enterprise in those rough-and-tumble days to guarantee a client against “fire, water, robbery or other calamity” remains a problem for the historian; the more so as it appears that mathematical calculations were first applied to the business by the eminent John de Witt. In our own time, at any rate, the insurance companies have woven a golden net under the tight-rope walk of existence; if life is a lottery, the prudent citizen faces it with the consciousness that he is backed both ways. Had the idea been thoroughly grasped in those remoter periods, no doubt but Alfred’s hostess would have been easily consoled for the damage done to her cakes and King John handsomely compensated for all that he lost in The Wash. Let us thank the soaring genius of the human mind which has thus found a means to canalize for us the waters of affliction; and let us always be scrupulous in paying up our premiums before the date indicated on the printed card, lest calamity should come upon us and find us unprepared. In a sense, though, insurance was but an empirical science until the Indescribable Company made its appearance. The man who is insured with the Indescribable walks the world in armour of proof; those contrary accidents and mortifications which are a source of spiritual profit to the saint are a source of material advantage to him. No east wind but flatters him with the prospect of a lucrative cold; no dropped banana skin but may suddenly hurl him into affluence. The chicken-farmer whose hen-houses are fitted with the company’s patent automatic egg-register can never make a failure of his business. The egg is no sooner laid than it falls gently through a slot which marks its passage on a kind of taximeter; and if the total of eggs at the end of the month is below the average the company paysーI had almost said, the company laysーan exact monetary equivalent for the shortage. The company which thus takes upon itself the office of a hen is equally ready when occasion arises to masquerade as a bee: if your hives are opened in the presence of its representative you can distend every empty cell with sweet nectar at the company’s expense. Doctors can guarantee themselves against an excess of panel patients, barristers against an absence of briefs. You can insure every step you take on this side of the grave, but no one of them on such handsome terms as the step which takes you into the grave; and it is confidently believed that if certain practical difficulties could be got over the Indescribable would somehow contrive to frank your passage into the world beyond. Wags have made merry at the company’s expense, alleging that a burglar can insure himself against a haul of sham jewels, and a clergyman against insufficient attendance at even-song. They tell stories of a client who murmured “Thank God!” as he fell down a lift-shaft, and a shipwrecked passenger who manifested the liveliest annoyance at the promptness of his rescuers when he was being paid for floating on a life-belt at the rate of ten pounds a minute. So thoroughly has the Indescribable reversed our scale of values here below.

In everything else, too, he showed himself temperate; his cup was of wood, while to the guests were given goblets of gold and silver. His dress, too, was quite simple, affecting only to be clean. The sword he carried at his side, the latchets of his Scythian shoes, the bridle of his horse were not adorned, like those of the other Scythians, with gold or gems or anything costly. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The 14-Minute Marcel Proust: A Very Short Guide to the Greatest Novel Ever Written【電子書籍】[ Stephen Fall ]

Today it's called In Search of Lost Time, though an earlier generation knew it as Remembrance of Things Past. Under whatever title, and whichever translator, Proust's gargantuan novel has challenged English-speaking readers for nearly a century.

Over the course of twelve months, Stephen Fall tackled the recent and lovely Penguin/Viking editions, blogging on the internet as he read. He devotes a short chapter to each of the novel's seven books, introducing it with a two-minute plot synopsis--thus the fourteen minutes of the title. He also ponders some of its highlights and compares the new translations with the classic ones based on the work of Charles Scott Moncrieff.

Three concluding chapters discuss Albertine, the great love of the narrator's life; Proust's service in the French army; and the 'dueling madeleines', which give a snapshot of each translator's version of a notable Proustian passage. About 20,000 words. Revised and updated May 2022.

Caesar, advancing by moderate journeys, and continuing his march without intermission, arrived at Lilybaeum, on the 14th day before the calends of January. Designing to embark immediately, though he had only one legion of new levies, and not quite six hundred horse, he ordered his tent to be pitched so near the sea-side that the waves lashed the very foot of it. This he did with a view that none should think he had time to delay, and that his men might be kept in readiness at a day or an hour’s warning. Though the wind at that time was contrary, he nevertheless detained the soldiers and mariners on board, that he might lose no opportunity of sailing; the rather, because the forces of the enemy were announced by the inhabitants of the province, to consist of innumberable cavalry not to be numbered; four legions headed by Juba, together with a great body of light-armed troops; ten legions under the command of Scipio; a hundred and twenty elephants, and fleets in abundance. Yet he was not alarmed, nor lost his confident hopes and spirits. Meantime the number of galleys and transports increased daily; the new-levied legions flocked in to him from all parts; among the rest the fifth, a veteran legion, and about two thousand horse. Having got together six legions and about two thousand horse, he embarked the legions as fast as they arrived, in the galleys, and the cavalry in the transports. Then sending the greatest part of the fleet before, with orders to sail for the island of Aponiana, not far from Lilybaeum; he himself continued a little longer in Sicily, and exposed to public sale some confiscated estates. Leaving all other affairs to the care of Allienus the praetor, who then commanded in the island; and strictly charging him to use the utmost expedition in embarking the remainder of the troops; he set sail the sixth day before the calends of January, and soon came up with the rest of the fleet. As the wind was favorable, and afforded a quick passage, he arrived the fourth day within sight of Africa, attended by a few galleys: for the transports, being mostly dispersed and scattered by the winds, with the exception of a few were driven different ways. Passing Clupea and Neapolis with the fleet, he continued for some time to coast along the shore, leaving many towns and castles behind him.

When the Spanish were destroying the indigenous civilizations of central and south America, hundreds of tons of gold and silver were plundered from them, transported overland and by sea across to the Caribbean and onward by ship to Spain to fund the wars and further conquests of the Spanish Royalty. Many ships were lost enroute, either by weather, poor planning or piracy of some kind. Some losses amounted to a dozen ships at a time, filled with untold gold, silver and other treasures.

Even though much of the west coast of North America was explored and occupied by the Spanish, they hesitated to try a more northern, direct route which might have cut miles off their journey back to Spain. One young Spanish captain was presented with an opportunity to try to find this 'northwest passage' through the fabled Straits of Anian, which could connect the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Destiny had a different plan, for as they approached the entrance to the Straits of Anian, the earth shifted in a rare event which completely changed the fate of the ship, its crew and its fabulous treasure.

On a construction site in modern day Victoria, workers uncover an old journal and discover it belonged to Jack Manson's great grandfather, husband of Margaret Manson, who both left Scotland as indentured colonists for the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Victoria on the rugged Pacific Northwest. Jack becomes intrigued when some of the unresolved mysteries of Margaret's adventures surface. Jack rallies his friends and colleagues to help solve the unknowns, especially the reference to Spanish gold in the journal. They work together to decipher the journal and solve a generations-old family riddle from Jack's family. As they try to solve these puzzles, the recurring subject of Spanish gold creates serious interest and complications from others with powerful gang connections as far as Vancouver and Hong Kong.

So again, they are thrown together into a complicated web of confusion, deceit and danger as they try to solve the mysteries of Margaret Manson's great West Coast adventure.

Pick up a copy today!

Swann's Way【電子書籍】[ Marcel Proust ]

In "Swann's Way," the first volume of Marcel Proust's monumental novel sequence "In Search of Lost Time," readers are invited into a labyrinthine exploration of memory, time, and the intricacies of human experience. Proust employs a distinctive literary style marked by long, flowing sentences and a deep introspective narrative voice that captures the fluidity of thought and the nuances of emotions. The novel intricately weaves together themes of love, jealousy, and the quest for artistic expression while delving into the ephemerality of life, all set against a backdrop of French aristocracy in the late 19th century. Proust's innovative approach to narrative structure and stream-of-consciousness technique position this work as a pivotal moment in modernist literature, reflecting a departure from traditional storytelling methods. Marcel Proust was a French writer whose own experiences with art, society, and longing profoundly influenced his literary creations. Living in a milieu of intellectualism and cultural vibrancy, Proust faced personal challenges, including his struggle with health issues and complex relationships. His keen observations of Parisian society and introspective nature compelled him to delve deeply into the human psyche, resulting in a work that resonates with existential inquiry and personal nostalgia.
