This new collection of interconnected essays marches to a provocative premise: what if one way to understand your life was to examine the objects within it? Which objects would you choose? What memories do they hold? And lined up in a row, what stories do they have to tell?

In recalling her experience, Dinah's essays each begin with one thing ー real or imaginary, lost or found, rare or ordinary, animal, vegetable, mineral, edible. Each object comes with a memory or a story, and so sparks an opportunity for rue or reflection or confession or revelation, having to do with her coming of age as a daughter, mother, actor, and writer: the piano that holds secrets to family history and inheritance; the gifted watches that tell so much more than time; the little black dress that carries all of youth's love and longing; the purple scarf that stands in for her journey from New York to Los Angeles, across stage and screen, to pursue her acting dream.

Read together or apart, the essays project the bountiful mosaic of life and love, of moving to Los Angeles and raising a family; of coming to terms with place, relationship, failures, and success; of dealing with up?ended notions about home and family and career and aging, too. Taken together, they add up to a pastiche of an artful and quirky life, lovingly remembered, compellingly told, wrapped up in the ties that bind the passage of time.

Totem's historical timeframe begins on the morning of April 29 1792, when a special Mass was being held inside a small Gothic church near the waterfront. For God and country and a stipend, they were to set sail aboard the HMS Discovery, under the command of George Vancouver.

After navigating the Galleon infested waters around South America, Discovery was to rendezvous with the HMS Chatham, a Brigantine, and proceed north in the wakes of Captain James Cook, who had gone in search of the Nortwest Passage before his ill fated expedition to the Sandwich Islands, where he'd stared death in the face and lost.

Sailing the Inside Passage proved spectacular and when they came upon a village comprised of large cedar longhouses where totems stood akin to sentinels, they dropped anchors. To add panache, flags were raised in a regalia of colours.

For the Natives, the sight of two vessels with tall ascending masts was one to behold. Since weakness defies naught, they dressed into their ceremonial costumes as a way to impart the traits of the characters upon the wearers. For those who wore the imagery, hoped to become one.

With theatrics that imbued no fear, the Natives closed the circle around the ships, and as the crew listened to their sonorous chanting, they watched the aquiline figure of the lead canoe flap its wings with great force against the bow as they crossed each quadrant. The sound resonated like a thunderclap.

The water lapped at the ships like a cat to milk, thus facilitating the encounter. As the Harbinger, the Thunderbird was the first to come aboard and as he put a foot on each rung, he shook his feathers while opening and closing his beak. His coloured eyes opened and then shut to display a gleaming copper sheath before reopening to reveal the wearer's eyes.

The enigmatic figure proceeded to dance in a ritualistic fashion, sometimes clapping its wings on the wooden deck as if to cause thunder. Then as suddenly as he'd started he stopped. Standing with its wings tucked in, he proceeded to let out a cathartic cry as the Chief climbed aboard.

The man was enrobed with animal skins embellished with bas-reliefs on thin red cedar boards. The pictures were carved and painted, denoting a variety of figures. His headdress was that of the Raven, while the front of his ?paulettes depicted the Thunderbird and the Eagle. His shins were protected with wooden strips, while skulls that portrayed the victims of his clan hung upside down from his waist. Vancouver thought of him as a living pictograph.

Unknown to Vancouver, a dastardly deed was perpetrated by Fire Iron, the ship's friar and his cohorts prior to their leaving the region. He turned a religious excursion into a bloody crusade. The repercussion of that event unleashed the tentacles of fate to reach far into the future, because of a symbiotic event that took place presently.

The West Coast Natives are portrayed as being more than Indian villages. They were a Nation with a pantheon of Gods, art, and architecture that was larger than life.

"Totem" is set on Haida Gwaii, the Charlotte Islands, in British Columbia. Although it delves into the supernatural, it's as a function of their past. It is what guided them then, and what makes them wonder now.

Enjoy.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Another Life On Memory, Language, Love, and the Passage of Time【電子書籍】[ Theodor Kallifatides ]

A rewarding philosophical essay on memory, language, love, and the passage of time, from a Greek immigrant who became one of Sweden’s most highly respected writers

“Nobody should write after the age of seventy-five,” a friend had said. At seventy-seven, struggling with the weight of writer’s block, Theodor Kallifatides makes the difficult decision to sell the Stockholm studio where he diligently worked for decades and retire. Unable to write, and yet unable to not write, he travels to his native Greece in the hope of rediscovering that lost fluidity of language.

In this slim memoir, Kallifatides explores the interplay of meaningful living and meaningful work, and the timeless question of how to reconcile oneself to aging. But he also comments on worrying trends in contemporary Europeーfrom religious intolerance and prejudice against immigrants to housing crises and gentrificationーand his sadness at the battered state of his beloved Greece.

Kallifatides offers an eloquent, thought-provoking meditation on the writing life, and an author’s place in a changing world.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Samuel Ringgold Ward A Life of Struggle【電子書籍】[ R. J. M. Blackett ]

The rediscovery of a pivotal figure in Black history and his importance and influence in the struggle against slavery and discrimination

Born on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Samuel Ringgold Ward (1817?c. 1869) escaped enslavement and would become a leading figure in the struggle for Black freedom, citizenship, and equality. He was extolled by his contemporary Frederick Douglass for his “depth of thought, fluency of speech, readiness of wit, logical exactness.” Until now, his story has been largely untold.

Ward, a newspaper editor, Congregational minister, and advocate for the temperance movement, was considered one of the leading orators of his time. After the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 he fled to Canada, where he lectured widely to improve conditions for formerly enslaved people who had settled there. Ward then went to Britain as an agent of the Canadian Antislavery Society and published his influential book Autobiography of a Fugitive Negro. He never returned to the United States, and he died in obscurity in Jamaica.

Despite Ward’s prominent role in the abolitionist movement, his story has been lost because of the decades he spent in exile. In this book, R. J. M. Blackett brings light to Ward’s life and his important role in the struggle against slavery and discrimination, and to the personal price he paid for confronting oppression.

It is natural to suppose that the arrival of the new Rector was a rather exciting event for Carlingford. It is a considerable town, it is true, nowadays, but then there are no alien activities to disturb the placeーno manufactures, and not much trade. And there is a very respectable amount of very good society at Carlingford. To begin with, it is a pretty placeーmild, sheltered, not far from town; and naturally its very reputation for good society increases the amount of that much-prized article. The advantages of the town in this respect have already put five per cent upon the house-rents; but this, of course, only refers to the real town, where you can go through an entire street of high garden-walls, with houses inside full of the retired exclusive comforts, the dainty economical refinement peculiar to such places; and where the good people consider their own society as a warrant of gentility less splendid, but not less assured, than the favour of Majesty itself. Naturally there are no Dissenters in Carlingfordーthat is to say, none above the rank of a greengrocer or milkman; and in bosoms devoted to the Church it may be well imagined that the advent of the new Rector was an event full of importance, and even of excitement. He was highly spoken of, everybody knew; but nobody knew who had spoken highly of him, nor had been able to find out, even by inference, what were his views. The Church had been Low during the last Rector's reignーprofoundly Lowーlost in the deepest abysses of Evangelicalism. A determined inclination to preach to everybody had seized upon that good man's brain; he had half emptied Salem Chapel, there could be no doubt; but, on the other hand, he had more than half filled the Chapel of St Roque, half a mile out of Carlingford, where the perpetual curate, young, handsome, and fervid, was on the very topmost pinnacle of Anglicanism. St Roque's was not more than a pleasant walk from the best quarter of Carlingford, on the north side of the town, thank heaven! which one could get at without the dread passage of that new horrid suburb, to which young Mr Rider, the young doctor, was devoting himself. But the Evangelical rector was dead, and his reign was over, and nobody could predict what the character of the new administration was to be. The obscurity in which the new Rector had buried his views was the most extraordinary thing about him. He had taken high honours at college, and was "highly spoken of;" but whether he was High, or Low, or Broad, muscular or sentimental, sermonising or decorative, nobody in the world seemed able to tell. "Fancy if he were just to be a Mr Bury over again! Fancy him going to the canal, and having sermons to the bargemen, and attending to all sorts of people except to us, whom it is his duty to attend to!" cried one of this much-canvassed clergyman's curious parishioners. "Indeed I do believe he must be one of these people. If he were in society at all, somebody would be sure to know." "Lucy dear, Mr Bury christened you," said another not less curious but more tolerant inquirer

Anubis, Guardian of the Underworld unveils the powerful story of the jackal-headed god who stood at the most sacred threshold in the ancient Egyptian worldview: the passage between life and eternity. Long before Osiris reigned as lord of the dead, Anubis was the protector of tombs, the master of mummification, and the guide who ensured no soul wandered lost in the darkness. This book explores his ancient origins, his evolution into one of Egypt's most trusted deities, and his essential role in every burial ritualーfrom preserving the body to leading the heart into judgment.

Richly detailed and grounded in both myth and archaeology, this volume brings readers deep into a civilization that believed death was not an ending, but a transformation requiring divine care. Through Anubis we discover a belief system built on loyalty, reverence, and the promise that no soul would face the unknown alone. Anubis, Guardian of the Underworld reveals why this silent, black-furred god continues to captivate the modern imagination and remains one of the most iconic and compassionate figures in the entire ancient world.

With details as rich as any giant biography, you will find yourself grieving as you read, grateful for the profound art that remains a part of our cultural heritage."ーWalter Mosley, New York Times bestselling author of Down the River Unto the Sea

"An intensely personal reflection on [Garcia's] father's legacy and his family bonds, tender in its treatment and stirring in its brevity."ー Booklist (starred review)

The son of one of the greatest writers of our timeーNobel Prize winner and internationally bestselling icon Gabriel Garc?a M?rquezーremembers his beloved father and mother in this tender memoir about love and loss.

In March 2014, Gabriel Garc?a M?rquez, one of the most acclaimed writers of the twentieth century, came down with a cold. The woman who had been beside him for more than fifty years, his wife Mercedes Barcha, was not hopeful; her husband, affectionately known as "Gabo," was then nearly 87 and battling dementia. I don't think we'll get out of this one, she told their son Rodrigo.

Hearing his mother's words, Rodrigo wondered, "Is this how the end begins?" To make sense of events as they unfolded, he began to write the story of Garc?a M?rquez's final days. The result is this intimate and honest account that not only contemplates his father's mortality but reveals his remarkable humanity.

Both an illuminating memoir and a heartbreaking work of reportage, A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes transforms this towering genius from literary creator to protagonist, and paints a rich and revelatory portrait of a family coping with loss. At its center is a man at his most vulnerable, whose wry humor shines even as his lucidity wanes. Gabo savors affection and attention from those in his orbit, but wrestles with what he will loseーand what is already lost. Throughout his final journey is the charismatic Mercedes, his constant companion and the creative muse who was one of the foremost influences on Gabo's life and his art.

Bittersweet and insightful, surprising and powerful, A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes celebrates the formidable legacy of Rodrigo's parents, offering an unprecedented look at the private family life of a literary giant. It is at once a gift to Gabriel Garc?a M?rquez's readers worldwide, and a grand tribute from a writer who knew him well.

"You read this short memoir with a feeling of deep gratitude. Yes, it is a moving homage by a son to his extraordinary parents, but also much more: it is a revelation of the hidden corners of a fascinating life. A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes is generous, unsentimental and wise." ーJuan Gabriel V?squez, author of The Sound of Things Falling

"A warm homage filled with both fond and painful memories." ー Kirkus

"Garcia's limpid prose gazes calmly at death, registering pain but not being overcome by it . . . the result is a moving eulogy that will captivate fans of the literary lion." ー Publishers Weekly

Within the space of a single blood-soaked year, she united the tribes to deliver blow after devastating blow to the Roman regime, culminating in a brutal, decisive battle.

Archaeologist Duncan Mackay has spent a lifetime on the trail of Boudica. Beginning near his home in Norfolk, in the heart of Boudica's tribal territory, he embarks on a journey in the footsteps of Romans and Britons, exploring their villages, towns, forts and roads. The passage of two millennia has buried the world that Boudica knew, but Duncan finds that its echoes and physical traces still surround us - as long as you know where to look. The armies marched along the roads we still use, and died in their thousands in towns, cities and countryside where we still live today. The site of Boudica's last battle was long believed be lost to time, but the threads of the story all pull towards one remarkable, forgotten little corner of the English landscape.

From the Breckland of Norfolk to the back streets of Colchester, from the remotest corner of Anglesey to the depths of the London Underground, Duncan takes us back two thousand years to retell the story of Britain's bloodiest year. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Gardens of the Sun: A Naturalist's Journal on the Mountains and in the Forests and Swamps of Borneo and the Sulu Archipelago【電子書籍】[ Frederick William Burbidge ]

When our ship had nearly reached the mouth of the Mersey, on her outward voyage, the boatswain and his men were busily engaged in lashing everything moveable in its place on deck. “We shall get it to-night,” said that man of the sea; but on the vessel went as smoothly as ever, and everybody was merry at dinner-time, hours after the “Bosun’s” prophecy. We watched the setting sun, and a gorgeous after-glow of purple, grey, and gold. Then came the twilight, and a sense of chilliness. The land on the port-side was lost in a soft grey mist; then it became colder and darker, and we went below. The saloon looked bright and cheerful, with its sparkle of glasses in the swinging racks, and the mellow light of the lamps. I read for an hour or more, and then “turned in,” heartily glad to think we were having such a smooth and pleasant time, and that the “Bosun’s” prediction had not been verified. I was soon asleep. How long I slept I do not quite remember, but I dreamed that I was falling down a well, and the crash made when I reached the bottom awoke me. I forgot for the moment where I was, but my first impressions were that, Zazel-like, I had been shot out of a cannon, and that I was whirling round chain-shot fashion. Instinctively stretching out my hands, I found myself in my berth, but the ship was plunging and rolling very much, and everything moveable was knocking about in all directions. Another crash, similar to the one which awoke me, told of loose crockery going to destruction in the steward’s pantry. I spent some time in trying to decide whether the ship was playing at leapfrog, or trying to turn a somersault. A “sea change” put an end to my deliberations. Sleep was impossible, and I was glad when morning came, and I held on to the berth with one hand, and dressed with the other. That man of the sea was right. We had “got” it, and no mistake; and we continued to “get it” until off Cape St. Vincent, when we regained smooth water. Cape St. Vincent is a rocky bluff, crested with a ruined convent and a lighthouse, the white walls of which gleam out brightly in the sunshine, although we are fully ten miles away. After we have passed it, and look back, it forms a much more picturesque object than when seen directly opposite; and in front of the nearly perpendicular cliffs is a curious cone-shaped rock, and through the narrow passage between this and the mainland, tradition says an American skipper ran his vessel for a wager, and got through safely. The whole coast here is bold and rocky, but not dangerous. Large craft may ride close in under the cliffs.

Many combat veterans refuse to discuss their experiences on the line. With the passage of time and the unreliability of memory, it becomes difficult to understand the true nature of war. In The Line: Combat in Korea, January?February 1951, retired Army colonel William T. Bowers uses firsthand, eyewitness accounts of the Korean War to offer readers an intimate look at the heroism and horror of the battlefront. These interviews of soldiers on the ground are particularly telling because they were conducted by Army historians immediately following combat. Known as the "forgotten war," the action in Korea lasted from June 1950 until July 1953 and was particularly savage for its combatants. During the first few months of the war, American and U.N. soldiers conducted rapid advances and hasty withdrawals, risky amphibious landings and dangerous evacuations, all while facing extreme weather conditions. In early 1951, the first winter of the war, frigid cold and severe winds complicated combat operations. As U.N. forces in Korea retreated from an oncoming Chinese and North Korean attack, U.S. commanders feared they would be forced to withdraw from occupation and admit to a Communist victory. Using interviews and extensive historical research, The Line analyzes how American troops fought the enemy to a standstill over this pivotal two-month period, reversing the course of the war. In early 1951, the war had nearly been lost, but by February's end, there existed the possibility of preserving an independent South Korea. Bowers compellingly illustrates how a series of small successes at the regiment, battalion, company, platoon, squad, and soldier levels ensured that the line was held against the North Korean enemy. The Line is the first of three volumes detailing combat during the Korean War. Each book focuses on the combat experiences of individual soldiers and junior leaders. Bowers enhances our understanding of combat by providing explanatory analysis and supplemental information from official records, giving readers a complete picture of combat operations in this understudied theatre. Through searing firsthand accounts and an intense focus on this brief but critical time frame, The Line offers new insights into U.S. military operations during the twentieth century and guarantees that the sacrifices of these courageous soldiers will not be lost to history.

“We measure time from Greenwich, and Greenwich is in England. England is east, so time moves west because the sun moves west, and we measure time by the suns movement.” With the insight of a real writer Lonnie Coleman has utilized his Navy experience to show how the insufferably slow passage of time feeds hates, warms friendships, and makes every mood a major crisis in human relationships.
Every officer and member aboard a ship is an individual within whom a private life smolders like a fire; only the outward calmness of the men and the simple, everyday needs of the ship keep this elemental force in check. But, as soon as the strain of danger or the boredom of inactivity disturbs the accepted equation, the smoldering fire breaks out into a momentary flame of human passion.
In the weird light of that flame human figures become distorted. The calm detachment of the Captain intended to protect the men under him at any cost assumes the specter of weakness and inefficiency. The self-realized inadequacies of the Executive Officer drive him into sadistic outbursts that endanger his own sanity. A young Lieutenant commits suicide. Then, just as suddenly, the flame is under control, passions subside and the immediacy of the ship's needs takes precedence above everything else.
This immediacy is a burden to the men and inwardly they revolt against it. When the ship docks in New York they try to escape it, only to discover that they have lost the capacity to function as individuals and have become a part of a living organism that is the ship.
Lonnie Coleman is a dramatic, creative storyteller who writes with great beauty and his Time Moving West is a fine sea story, a fine character story and a fine piece of writing which should live for a long time.

"Wasted Youth is James Wright's vivid and emphatically unromantic memoir of his late teens and early twenties, when his life derived its meager meaning from consuming drugs and alcohol, dodging authority, and simply staying alive day to day. Relentlessly self-critical, Wright is not looking for pity or even sympathy from his reader. But the reader can't help but extend it anyway, knowing from the evidence of this beautifully written book the great potential that was once in danger of being lost." Richard J. Maiman, author of A Man for all Branches

Coming of age in the social turbulence of the late 60s presented a challenge for the young men of the time. If there was a legitimate rite of passage, the author didn't know about it, and if he did, he wouldn't have done it anyway, preferring to chart his own course into the underworld of change. Wasted Youth is his account of that passage, a tale of survival and slow learning. Told with humor and an eye for absurdity, the memoir follows the author down blind alleys and through close calls, wandering in the darkness of drugs and crime, looking for something he might not recognize if he found it. A personal journey of getting lost and never quite found, the author avoids triumph but discovers something far more meaningful: the path to a place where grief can be felt at the heart of being.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Mississippi in Africa The Saga of the Slaves of Prospect Hill Plantation and Their Legacy in Liberia Today【電子書籍】[ Alan Huffman ]

When wealthy Mississippi cotton planter Isaac Ross died in 1836, his will decreed that his plantation, Prospect Hill, should be liquidated and the proceeds from the sale be used to pay for his slaves' passage to the newly established colony of Liberia in western Africa. Ross's heirs contested the will for more than a decade, prompting a deadly revolt in which a group of slaves burned Ross's mansion to the ground. But the will was ultimately upheld. The slaves then emigrated to their new home, where they battled the local tribes and built vast plantations with Greek Revival-style mansions in a region the Americo-Africans renamed “Mississippi in Africa.”

In the late twentieth century, the seeds of resentment sown over a century of cultural conflict between the colonists and tribal people exploded, begetting a civil war that rages in Liberia to this day. Tracking down Prospect Hill's living descendants, deciphering a history ruled by rumor, and delivering the complete chronicle in riveting prose, journalist Alan Huffman has rescued a lost chapter of American history whose aftermath is far from over.

Identical twin brothers Thomas and Joshua are hell-bent to determine whether a Hopi prophecy about four sacred stones is true or not. It is prophesized that a sacred stone was hidden in the Far East and if reunited with the sacred stone in North America it will mark the arrival of the Second Messiah. It takes the brothers far away to Burma where Thomas discovers clues left behind by an early Protestant missionary from Pennsylvania.
After finding Louis Riels' personal journals through Riel's grandson, the twins use their knowledge of Native American religious beliefs to begin an odyssey on the train past Mandalay and the officer's club where George Orwell drank his oily gin beside the Allywaddy River in the 1920s, to the far reaches in north in Burma. A prophecy thousands of years old is protected by guardians of the sacred stone, but resourcefulness and timing lay with the M?tis twins from Canada.
Factually accurate and well-researched, Prophecy Seekers takes the reader deep into old Native beliefs and connections to the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel, reaching as far as northern Burma and the Kachin tribe, said to be the source of the migration to the Americas centuries before. The Hopi Indians, holders of the ancient prophecies, were the focus of Remy McFlynn for many years when he studied under a medicine man in Canada. His knowledge and passion for Native culture shine through in the book and rubbed off on Trapp, who wrote the book while living in Hong Kong.
Based on an extraordinary journey to northern Burma, some scenes are so vivid that it transports the reader to different vistas, from George Orwell's officer's club to the encounter with the Colonel on the train and even the meeting with Louis Riel's grandson, novel has captured something special. But the most memorable aspect of the book is the ending, when the phoenix burns into ash. Seldom has a passage of such objectivity and clarity been recorded during a brush with death.

In "Cities of the Plain," the concluding volume of Marcel Proust's monumental work "In Search of Lost Time," the author intricately weaves a tapestry of memory, desire, and time. Employing his hallmark style of long, flowing sentences and profound psychological insights, Proust delves into the complexities of human relationships, particularly the tension between art and life, as well as the ephemeral nature of beauty and love.

For nearly two thousand years the existence of a great Southland, in the ocean of the southern hemisphere, corresponding to the land mass of the Old World in the northern, was a matter of doubt and dispute among geographers. In the sixteenth century, this land begins to appear vaguely on globes and charts; possibly the information was due to the Malays and Arabs, who were skilful sailors and made long voyages in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It has been thought that the Portuguese, approaching the Malay region from the west, while the Spaniards came from the east, may have been acquainted with the northern coast of the new continent; since they certainly had some knowledge of the northern coast of New Guinea early in the sixteenth century. But our first definite information may be said to date from the beginning of the seventeenth century, when a Spanish exploring expedition, under de Quiros and de Torres, sailed across the Pacific and discovered the New Hebrides group. One of the islands they named la Australia del Espiritu Santo, under the idea that it formed part of the great southern mainland. De Quiros then sailed back to Mexico, but Torres continued his voyage northwestward through the straits which still bear his name, and so to the Spanish Possessions in the Philippines. But the day of Spain as a sea power was passing away, and it was to the Dutch traders that the western world owed its first real acquaintance with Australia. The early discoveries were often accidental and did not lead to settlement or regular intercourse with the natives. This was due partly to the backward state of the science of navigation, partly to the fact that the voyagers on long expeditions usually lost from half to three-quarters of their crews from disease. The Dutch had the advantage of a local base, as they were already firmly established in the East Indian Islands; so that Australia was really discovered from the Indies. Trade, not exploration, was the main motive of the Dutch. So, in the early part of the seventeenth century, trading ships were dispatched from Batavia by the Dutch East-India Company to explore the north and west coasts of Australia. We find all along these coasts the names of the ships still surviving, as in Arnhem Land and Cape Leuwin; those of the captains, as in Dirk Hartog Island, Houtmans Abrolhos, Edels Land and Nuyts Land; while the Gulf of Carpentaria is a memorial to Peter Carpenter, the then Governor of the great trading company. The most important voyage of all was that of Abel 1 Tasman, in 1642. He started from Mauritius, to discover a passage south of the Australian continent; and after landing in Van Diemen’s Land, now Tasmania, he sailed across the Tasman Sea and up the west coast of New Zealand, and so back to Batavia by way of Tonga and the Fiji islands and the north coast of New Guinea. He left behind him another name, New Holland, for the whole continent. These names throughout Australasia bear witness to the skill and energy of the Dutch navigators; but they came only as traders, and the west coast of Australia, which they knew best, had little to attract them to permanent settlement. Sand and grass, hostile natives, and dangerous reefs marked by a series of shipwrecks sum up their impression of the new land. Here are 2,3 two views of the coast; it does not seem attractive for sailors. We can quite understand why they made no effort to open up a trade like that of the East Indies, especially as they missed the east coast, the most promising region for European settlement.

Of all the gems which have served to adorn a crown or deck a beauty the Regent has perhaps had the most remarkable career. Bought, sold, stolen and lost, it has passed through many hands, always however leaving some mark of its passage, so that the historian can follow its devious course with some certainty. From its extraordinary size it has been impossible to confound it with any other diamond in the world; hence the absence of those conflicting statements with regard to it which puzzle one at every turn in the cases of certain other historical jewels. The first authentic appearance of this diamond in history was in December, 1701. In that month it was offered for sale by a diamond merchant named Jamchund to the Governor of Fort St. George near Madras, Mr. Thomas Pitt, the grandfather of the great Earl of Chatham. Although, as we shall see later on, the diamond came fairly into the hands of Mr. Pitt, it had already a taint of blood upon it. I allude to the nebulous and gloomy story that has drifted down to us along with this sparkling gem. How far the story is true it is now impossible to ascertain. The Regent itself alone could throw any light upon the subject, and that, notwithstanding its myriad rays, it refuses to do. Tradition says the stone was found by a slave at Partreal, a hundred and fifty miles south of Golconda. The native princes who worked these diamond mines were very particular to see that all the large gems should be reserved to deck their own swarthy persons; hence there were most stringent regulations for the detection of theft. No person who was not above suspicionーand who indeed was ever above the suspicion of an absolute Asiatic prince?ーmight leave the mines without being thoroughly examined, inside and out, by means of purgatives, emetics and the like. Notwithstanding all these precautions however, the Regent was concealed in a wound made in the calf of the leg of a slave. The inspectors, I suppose, did not probe the wound deeply enough, for the slave got away safely with his prize and reached Madras. Alas! poor wretch, it was an evil day for him when he found the great rough diamond. On seeking out a purchaser he met with an English skipper who offered him a considerable sum for it; but on going to the ship, perhaps to get his money, he was slain and thrown overboard. The skipper then sold the stone to Jamchund for one thousand pounds (5000), took to drink and speedily succumbing to the combined effects of an evil conscience and delirium tremens hanged himself. Thus twice baptized in blood the great diamond was fairly launched upon its life of adventure

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】When Paris Was Her Lover【電子書籍】[ Heidi Harrison ]

When Paris Was Her Lover juxtaposes the lives of two women from two continents. In the Prologue we meet Marlene. It is the year 2000. She is ensconced under the Eiffel Tower, reminiscent and dreamy as she recalls that once upon a time, Paris was her lover. We then move backward to the year 1985. We are in San Francisco, where she lives and works as a preschool teacher. She is lost and friendless. On a whim, she decides to go to Paris. Once she gets there, she becomes enamored not only of the city but also of a woman she meets at a concert she attends at Versailles. She is shy, does not speak a word of French, and when the opportunity arises to communicate with Th?r?se, she walks away sheepishly as Th?r?se, herself smitten by Marlene, slips into another car on the train, wishing for the dream that did not happen that night. After this missed opportunity, each woman forges a path toward another destiny. Marlene adopts a Romanian girl who is the product of the brutal era of the Ceausescu dictatorship. Th?r?se searches for looted violins and other stringed instruments that were originally owned by Jewish individuals who perished in the gas chambers. While Marlene and Th?r?se follow these very divergent paths in their lives, there is an undercurrent of an undying passion between these two women. Often in discreet moments, each one brings to light the memory of the other, and in doing so, they not only create a parallel process but also repetitively ignite their incessant longings for the other. An ever-present theme of survival punctuates each section of this work. While on the outside this piece of fiction appears to be seamless, a tapestry woven with beauty and humor and a magical sense of wonder, underneath there is the reminder of the horrors of war and the ramifications therein. The music that resonates with each passage of the book lends itself to a transcendence from the pathos of the human existence to that of the sublime, survival in its quintessential realm.
