New weird fiction novel, Alphabet of Lightning, tries to fix our war-raged future by diving into our shadowy past. What if all the horrors of our lives, everything we inflict on one another, could be traced to one guy? Morris's horror sci-fi novel, Alphabet of Lightning, brings us Shamus Connelly from a ravaged future, chasing through time that one guy that would destroy us all. And it all starts when he lands in the body of a kid in the 1920s and discovers he's got strange abilities...

CALL THE LIGHTNING

Centuries to come, humanity has blown itself off the map with nuclear weapons but has slowly rebuilt. Those who rule from the megalopolis of the former American Eastern Seaboard have created a perpetual, clean energy source that could eliminate war. But one rogue soldier, drummed out of the service, hacks the device for personal gainーto travel through time and become a god.

Typhon Demarest is followed through time by the Illegitimi, whose operatives protect the accumulation of information. But time-travel works strangely, and they must spawn backward, into the bodies of their ancestors.

Humanity’s only hope is born into a severely disabled miner’s kid in rural central Pennsylvania in the 1920s, and this Shamus Connelly has a very special gift that has a habit of keeping him alive while also nearly killing himーjust like his endless curiosity.

The kid wants to be a detective when he grows up, and in this first book of the There Was a Crooked Man series, he uncovers a mystery beyond anyone’s wildest nightmares and sets the stage for this worlds-spanning, centuries-deep tour de force.

REVIEWS

“Edward Morris is a fearless writer, expanding the boundaries of what is possible with the weird. Read him.” (Jeff VanderMeer, bestselling author of the Southern Reach trilogy, Dead Astronauts, and Borne)

“Alphabet of Lightning is told in a voice that puts me in mind of such writers as William S. Burroughs and Joseph S. Pulver Sr. It’s not that he sounds like them specifically, but he is that daring and poetic a wordsmith. In a world of books generally populated with uninspired blandness, such originality of voice is a quality to be prized highly. But the originality doesn’t end with the voice. In Morris’s remarkable narrative, ‘Past and Future are but different Towns, side-by-side in the same direction.’ In the vividly rendered travels documented herein, besides a protagonist with superhuman powers, you’ll encounter some titans from history as well, but I won’t spoil the fun by naming them. Alphabet of Lightning is refreshing, invigorating, complex, and fascinating . . . and you’re telling me these uncanny travels aren’t over, yet? Morris has me ready to buy the next ticket.” (Jeffrey Thomas, author of Punktown)

“Edward Morris uses words the way Miles Davis used notes.” (Trent Zelazny, author of Fractal Despondency)

“Edward Morris’s remarkable, stone force novel falls into the post-WWII canon of great post-apocalyptic science fiction. It stands with Earth Abides, No Blade of Grass, and ‘Lot,’ and when you stand with Stewart, Christopher, and Ward Moore, you are standing on sacred ground. The post-apocalypse school of science fiction, it has been speculated, is a metaphor for our present. The seared landscape and shaken polity of our time can best be grasped through a subcategory of fiction that holds at its heart the dirtiest kind of realism. The series is a terrifying, masterfully written, unforgiving precis of an unbearable present become an unbearable future, and Morris serves this as well as any writer of our time. His landscape is gutted, his vision soars.” (Barry N. Malzberg, SFWA Grand Master)

“Doc Smith’s Lensman books were once dubbed The History of Civilization. But I’m afraid that grand and ambitious overarching description has been boldly ripped out of Doc Smith’s cold, cold hands by Edward Morris with his wild-eyed opus. Replete with scores of unforgettable characters and scenes, the book rampages across space and time with a take-no-prisoners bad attitude. Formalistically daring and esthetically subtle, full of pyrotechnics and epiphanies, it’s what you might get if you mashed up Alfred Bester’s The Stars my Destination with Robert Wilson’s Julian Comstock, Neal Barrett’s Through Darkest America, and its sequel Dawn’s Uncertain Light, and H.P. Lovecraft’s ‘The Color Out of Space’ーthen had Jodorowsky film the result! Nothing like it on the planet!” (Paul Di Filippo, author of Cosmocopia and A Princess of the Linear Jungle)

“It is an honor to have lived and worked long enough to have other writers riffing on my work the way Morris riffs on The Guns of the South in this series.” (Harry Turtledove, author of damn near everything)

J.R.R. TOLKIEN: POCKET GUIDE

A new guide to the life and work of J.R.R. Tolkien, the premier British fantasy author of the 20th century, and his great works: The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. This guide is clearly written for the general reader, offering an all-round introduction to this hugely popular writer. The book is full of illuminating facts and details about Tolkien and his works.
The text has been revised and updated for this edition.

EXTRACT FROM THE INTRODUCTION:
Philip Toynbee declared, in 1961, that Tolkien's 'childish books had passed into a merciful oblivion', a wonderful statement, just a tad inaccurate. In 1997, The Lord of the Rings was voted the top book of the 20th century by readers in a British bookstore's poll (Waterstone's). 104 out of 105 stores and 25,000 readers put The Lord of the Rings at the top (1984 was second).
Around 100 million copies of The Lord of the Rings had been sold by the end of the twentieth century, and 60 million copies of The Hobbit, with sales of around 3 million per year of the two books combined. Readers just love reading Tolkien's books. It's that simple. You can't force people to buy books or go see movies; there's isn't a magic formula (or ruling ring) to hypnotize readers and consumers (if there was, it'd be worth billions). And the Tolkien phenomenon began with readers. Back in 1937, 1954 and 1955, the publishers Allen & Unwin did their bit, of course, with reviews, blurbs, advertizing and so on, promoting The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, as did the critics, but it was readers who first started the phenomenon that has become truly global. Tolkien's influence on literature has been considerable, too, and not just in the realm of fantasy, sci-fi, fairy tales and related genres. As fantasy author Terry Brooks said, Tolkien 'was the premier fantasy writer of the last century, and all of us writing today owe him a huge debt.' No other writer W.H. Auden reckoned had 'created an imaginary world and a history in such detail'. Colin Wilson agreed that only a few writers have concocted a total universe, and that Tolkien's was very impressive. Tolkien's mythological writings may be the 'largest body of invented mythology in the history of literature', according to David Day. Invented, that is, by one person. It's also 'certainly the most complex and detailed invented world in all literature'.

CONTENTS

Acknowledgements ???
Abbreviations ???
Introduction ???

The first book of the Profit Logbooks Series sets the stage for a whole new universe of adventure in the stars.

Zack Mbele, captain of the independent freighter Profit, needs cash fast. There’s a loan payment due on the ship, not to mention a bogus Customs duty imposed by a crooked official. They’ll seize his ship if he doesn't pay up and he has few prospects.

When an old friend calls with a lead on a job, Zack isn’t too picky about obeying the letter of the law. All he has to do is smuggle someone out of Highpoint, a huge space station orbiting between the Earth and the Moon.

It's not all that easy, as a beautiful assassin and the Red Dragons gang complicate things. Suddenly Zack is involved in a maze of double-cross and murder as he races the Dragons and a shadowy para-military army for the greatest prize of all.

Review Quote-

"That's the next thing you should know: these are great heroes. Davis has created a fantastic hard-boiled sci-fi hero in Zack Mbele. He's got a complicated past, remarkable abilities, good friends for whom he has fierce loyalty, a deep cynicism and an inability to trust strangers, and a lone wolf streak a mile wide: he's Sam Spade and Harry Dresden and Simon Green's John Taylor and all the rest of those kinds of guys." - Theoden Humphrey, Amazon

Excerpt-

"I stood up and turned toward the exit. I took half a step and stopped, sighed, and turned back. I had made a deal with the man. That still counted for something with me.

I bent over him and pulled him into a sitting position. The nanos extended into my arms and legs and I hoisted him easily into a fireman’s carry across my back and shoulders.

The small crowd that had gathered when the shooting stopped backed away. I lifted my head as they parted in front of me. I was sure that by now, my face and all the action had been recorded on a dozen eye cameras, not to mention the arcade’s security cams. Hiding my face was a waste of time."

About the Author-

Bruce Davis stitches words together into engaging, heart pumping stories that carry you along for the ride. They are the stories that stay with you for the rest of your life as some of the best reading you've done, the kinds of stories you use to measure everything you read after.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】From Zone to Zone with His Latest Invention The Wonderful Trip of Frank Read, Jr.【電子書籍】[ Luis Senarens ]

From Zone to Zone: It is easy to imagine that the steampunk movement ー science fiction featuring steam-powered inventions and a 19th-century style ー is purely a modern invention, an exercise in “what if there had been a Victorian equivalent to today’s sci-fi genre?” However, early science fiction actually included much more than just the well-remembered works of literary figures like Jules Verne, and there really were a wealth of popular stories about steam-powered robots and other wild inventions before the turn of the 20th century. Many of these fictional creations were the products of boy inventor Frank Reade and later, his son, Frank Reade, Jr. (bit.ly/2WNXmAO)

Harry Cohen wrote the Frank Reade, Sr. series as "Noname." Cohen also wrote as Harry Enton. In 1879, Luis Senarens took over the series and the pen name; he was only sixteen. Senarens began his first Frank Reade book by shoving Frank into middle-age, retiring him, and announcing that his son had taken over as an inventor. Senarens is said to have written under twenty-six names besides "Noname," but almost never as himself.

- Henrik Dahl, Weekendavisen

***** - Kultur for Unge

≫Handlingen er fantastisk! Worlds Beyond Time: Sci-Fi Art of the 1970s - Adam Rowe (Harry N. Abrams) 【紙書籍】 9781419748691
Worlds Beyond Time: Sci-Fi Art of the 1970s著者: Adam Rowe出版社: Harry N. Abrams出版日: 2023年07月25日新しい本新古品・未使用品。 Worlds Beyond Time is the definitive visual history of the spaceships, alien landscapes, cryptozoology, and imagined industrial machinery of 1970s paperback sci-fi art and the artists who created these extraordinary images. In the 1970s, mass-produced, cheaply printed science-fiction novels were thriving. The paper was rough, the titles outrageous, and the cover art astounding. Over the course of the decade, a stable of talented painters, comic-book artists, and designers produced thousands of the most eye-catching book covers to ever grace bookstore shelves (or spinner racks). Curiously, the pieces commissioned for these covers often had very little to do with the contents of the books they were selling, but by leaning heavily on psychedelic imagery, far-out landscapes, and trippy surrealism, the art was able to satisfy the same space race-fueled appetite for the big ideas and brave new worlds that sci-fi writers were boldly pushing forward. In Worlds Beyond Time: Sci-Fi Art of the 1970s, Adam Rowe--who has been curating, championing, and resurrecting the best and most obscure art that 1970s sci-fi has to offer on his blog 70s Sci-Fi Art--introduces readers to the biggest names in the genre, including Chris Foss, Peter Elson, Tim White, Jack Gaughan, and Virgil Finlay, as well as their influences. With deep dives into the subject matter that commonly appeared on these covers--spaceships, alien landscapes, fantasy realms, cryptozoology, and heavy machinery--this book is a loving tribute to a unique and robust art form whose legacy lives on both in nostalgic appreciation as well as the retro-chic design of mainstream sci-fi films such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Alien: Covenant, and Thor: Ragnarok. Includes Color Illustrations

There’s just one small problem…
… we’re still here!

An Amatuer archeologist’s outlandish theory of a Mayan exodus is spectacularly proven correct by the return of the 6-kilometer wide city/ship Atlantis. Working with his teenage daughter, they try to understand the sophisticated Mayan and Minoan cultures on board the giant ship, and help them to understand our world. When Atlantis is revealed to the world it attracts the attention of the elitist Phoenix group, whose offer to help turns out to be less than genuine.

Will Atlantis’ 5 millennia journey be brought to an abrupt end?
Can the past and the present be united to save the future?

“Neil’s story telling has a way of ending many chapters that is sure to put a smile on your face as you turn the page. Mayan, Atlantis Returns is a fantastic adventure that you won’t want to put down. I’m biting my nails for the next installment. Wow! Awesome!” -Stephen Fisher for Reader’s Favorite

“Mayan is an astonishing history lesson embedded in asatisfying thriller worthy of James Rollins or Spielberg” ? Patrick Nichol, Chapters.Indigo.ca

“Neil Enock has done a great job of creating a great novel with great characters who manage not to become larger than life. This reminds me of the way J.K. Rowling handled her human characters in the Harry Potter series.” -Ray Simmons for Reader’s Favorite

“I love this story. I could actually see it playing out in my head. You did a ton of research. Makes you think!” ? Sarah Burrows, Goodreads.com

“Promisingly evident in the first couple of chapters, this author doesn’t hold anything back. He wants readers to dive head first into this book and he keeps them submerged until the very end. He has created a fictional Atlantis in full.” -Benjamin Ookami for Reader’s Favorite

“Myth becomes legend, legend becomes reality. A truly epic tale that will have you reflecting on our society.” ? Allan Stickel, Screen Actor and Avid Reader.

“Neil Enock creates a cast of well-developed, interesting characters to guide the reader through an entertaining story of discovery and reflection. Anyone loving Atlantean mythology, or seeking some insight into the ancient races or civilisations past will find the delicious morsels woven into the tale enjoyable, and could even inspire further research into these fields. A page-turning insightful tale intended to inspire.” -K.J. Simmill for Reader’s Favorite

Mayan, Atlantis Returns is the first book in the Millennia Series, an all new Epic Sci-Fi Adventure series by author Neil Enock.

Recommended for ages 12 and up.

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and the subsequent US-led invasions of Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003 profoundly affected all aspects of society, including cinema. Or did they? Even now, years after those horrific events, debate still rages over their impact on films. At the time many expected Hollywood to tamp down graphic movie violence, while others hoped that filmmakers would finally lay bare volatile socio-political issues fuelling terrorist attacks. In fact, what has emerged is a thicket of darkly pessimistic genres including thrillers, combat films, sci-fi, and horror that makes pre-9/11 films appear naive and optimistic. Hollywood 9/11 explores this transformation, critically examining everything from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to The Hurt Locker and placing the films in the context of both the socio-political scene and the history of cinema.

After being kidnapped by an alien race called the Ghovik, Parker Reid is battered and bruised and awaiting his turn on the auction block on Bengus-6. He's been separated from his friends, and his friend Harry never made it to Bengus-6 at allーhe was whisked off in a shuttle by one of the Ghovik. Desperate to find his friends and escape the slave market, Parker is drawn to a tall, blue alien with a mane of blue hair. He's dark, dangerous, and so hot Parker can't look away. And he can't suppress his powerful desireーor the strange pull that draws him to the alien with a potent, irresistible force.

Zhor, the big, blue-skinned Zentaran captain of the pirate spaceship Corsair, has just received word of a disabled freighter ripe for scavenging. But as he passes the slave market on the way to his ship, he feels an inexplicable desire for a pathetic human about to be auctioned off. He tries to ignore it, but he can't walk away. The pull is too strong. So he buys the poor creature to keep him safe, thinking he can simply set him free.

But he didn't plan on the new slave technologyーa control tag that compels the slave to fulfill his master's every unspoken desire. The word rhuza enters Zhor's mind, the Zentaran belief in two soulpieces finding each other. But there is no such thing as rhuzas. There's only the control tag. And Zhor can't deny the strength of his desire. The only thing he can do is get the human off his ship as soon as they land.

Too bad Parker has been voted onto the crew, has located one of his friends, and has discovered a cargo aboard the freighter that changes their entire mission from a simple salvage job to something that could get them all killed…

Reader note: contains gay Sci-Fi Romance, alpha aliens, and a happily ever after

One of the most popular story arcs from Doctor Who's "Fourth Doctor" period (starring Tom Baker as the Doctor), writer Terry Nation's Genesis of the Daleks not only fleshes out the back story of the Doctor's most fearsome nemeses-the megalomaniacal, robotic Daleks-but also serves up athoughtful storyline that doesn't skimp on the action. First aired on the BBC in 1975, the six-episode story has the Doctor and companions Sarah Jane (Elisabeth Sladen) and Harry (Ian Marter) summoned to the Daleks'home planet of Skaros at a time prior to their rise to power. Hoping toprevent the domination-hungry beings from developing their warlike behavior, they soon find themselves in the middle of a war between two races, the Kaleds and the Thals, and uncover a plot by a Kaled scientist, Davros, to render his people invincible as the metal-encased Daleks. A gripping story with elements that remain topical even today (ancient cultures locked in an endless war, genetic experimentation, eugenics), Genesis of the Daleks is an excellent starting point for first-time Who viewers, and a fine reminder of the show at it's best for longtime fans. The two-disc DVD offers a considerable amount of extras, most notably a commentary track by Baker, Sladen, co-star Peter Miles, and director David Maloney. "Genesis of a Classic" is an hour-long featurette about the story, with interviews from all the major (surviving) cast and crew members, while "The Dalek Tapes" explores the creatures' history via rare clips and interviews with performers and production staff. There's also a clip from a vintage episode of the U.K. children's series Blue Peter that's devoted to Doctor Who models and creatures, as well as the detailed photo gallery and subtitled text commentary that are standards on all Doctor WhoDVDs. Those with DVD-ROM can access PDF documents of the 1976 Doctor Who Annual and listings from the Radio Times.
