The authors of this volume, while they sympathize with every honest effort to relieve the disabilities and sufferings of their sex, are confident that the chief cause of these evils is the fact that the honor and duties of the family state are not duly appreciated, that women are not trained for these duties as men are trained for their trades and professions, and that, as the consequence, family labor is poorly done, poorly paid, and regarded as menial and disgraceful. To be the nurse of young children, a cook, or a housemaid, is regarded as the lowest and last resort of poverty, and one which no woman of culture and position can assume without loss of caste and respectability. It is the aim of this volume to elevate both the honor and the remuneration of all the employments that sustain the many difficult and sacred duties of the family state, and thus to render each department of woman's true profession as much desired and respected as are the most honored professions of men. When the other sex are to be instructed in law, medicine, or divinity, they are favored with numerous institutions richly endowed, with teachers of the highest talents and acquirements, with extensive libraries, and abundant and costly apparatus. With such advantages they devote nearly ten of the best years of life to preparing themselves for their profession; and to secure the public from unqualified members of these professions, none can enter them until examined by a competent body, who certify to their due preparation for their duties. Woman's profession embraces the care and nursing of the body in the critical periods of infancy and sickness, the training of the human mind in the most impressible period of childhood, the instruction and control of servants, and most of the government and economies of the family state. These duties of woman are as sacred and important as any ordained to man; and yet no such advantages for preparation have been accorded to her, nor is there any qualified body to certify the public that a woman is duly prepared to give proper instruction in her profession. This unfortunate want, and also the questions frequently asked concerning the domestic qualifications of both the authors of this work, who have formerly written upon such topics, make it needful to give some account of the advantages they have enjoyed in preparation for the important office assumed as teachers of woman's domestic duties. The sister whose name is subscribed is the eldest of nine children by her own mother, and of four by her step-mother; and having a natural love for children, she found it a pleasure as well as a duty to aid in the care of infancy and childhood. At sixteen, she was deprived of a mother, who was remarkable not only for intelligence and culture, but for a natural taste and skill in domestic handicraft. Her place was awhile filled by an aunt remarkable for her habits of neatness and order, and especially for her economy. She was, in the course of time, replaced by a stepmother, who had been accustomed to a superior style of housekeeping, and was an expert in all departments of domestic administration.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Allied Participation in Operation Iraqi Freedom: Coalition of the Willing for the Iraq War 2003, Force Contributions by Nations, Challengers for Army Planners【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

The invasion of Iraq in March 2003ーOperation Iraqi Freedomーwas controversial at its start. The United Nations was reluctant to provide a specific endorsement for direct U.S. military action. Without this authorization, a number of close allies refused to participate in the operation. In order to garner greater support and provide an international flavor to the intervention, President George W. Bush assembled a "coalition of the willing," ultimately involving about sixty nations. Although some of these countries supplied little more than nominal assistance, fully thirty-seven of them furnished a total of around 150,000 ground forces from the start of the operation through July 2009. These troops conducted security operations; provided reconstruction assistance; operated command-and-control headquarters; and fought, were wounded, and killed alongside U.S. soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines. This temporary alliance was more than just a paper coalition; it involved substantial and important support from our international partners in helping achieve U.S. war aims. It is important that the United States Army and the American people know about and remember the sacrifices of these allies. Allied Participation in Operation Iraqi Freedom highlights a number of key aspects of allied support to the U.S.-led operation. The presence of ground forces from so many coalition partners allowed U.S. combat forces to focus their generally superior capabilities in more contested sections of the country. This division of labor served American ends while still ensuring that our partners performed vital work that fully justified their commitment to Iraq's security. These combined operations also strengthened the ties between countries and improved the quality of interoperability between U.S. and coalition troops. Allied support played an important role in stabilizing the situation in Iraq.

This short study also underscores the significant challenges that U.S. Army planners faced in Iraqi Freedom in integrating a host of different military partners into U.S. operational plans. Similar issues of working together in a complex military environment will doubtless reoccur in future operations, but the benefits of assembling such coalitions will almost certainly outweigh the problems. The United States cannot fight alone in the current operational environment, and improving the quantity and quality of our interaction with our international partners should continue to be a high priority. I commend this monograph to today's Army to read, gain insight into such combined operations, and reflect on how much support our allies can provide in future military endeavors.

Introduction * Allied Participation in Operation Iraqi Freedom * Overview * Formation of the Coalition of the Willing, November 2002-March 2003 * Major Combat Operations: Coalition Forces Land Component Command, March-May 2003 * Combined Joint Task Force-7, June 2003-May 2004 * Multi-National Force-Iraq, May 2004-July 2009 * Analysis * Force Contributions by Nations * Albania * Armenia * Australia * Azerbaijan * Bosnia-Herzegovina * Bulgaria * Czech Republic * Denmark * Dominican Republic * El Salvador * Estonia * Georgia * Honduras * Hungary * Italy * Japan * Kazakhstan * Latvia * Lithuania * Macedonia * Moldova * Mongolia * The Netherlands * New Zealand * Nicaragua * Norway * Philippines * Poland * Portugal * Republic of Korea * Romania * Slovakia * Spain * Thailand * Tonga * Ukraine * United Kingdom * Further Readings * Abbreviations

Collaborators, Moral Objectors and Fellow Travelers. The Actions, Reactions and Inactions of 13 Nazi-era European Leaders【電子書籍】[ David Weiss ]

The Actions, Reactions and Inactions of 13 Nazi-era European Leaders【電子書籍】[ David Weiss ]

Introduction:

Fellow Traveler: A person who is not a member of a particular group or political party, but who sympathizes with the group's aims and policies. ー(definition from Oxford Language Dictionary)

The term Fellow Traveler is often used in relation to communist nations, but it is even more relevant when discussing fascism. When Stalin began setting up the Soviet satellite nations he searched for allies in places like Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia. While Soviet agents and operatives were already infiltrating these nations, Stalin wanted and needed more support from local and national-level politicians. He found this support coming from a variety of people who shared many Soviet beliefs and Stalin's basic world vision. Hitler needed Fellow Travelers for the same reasons and used them throughout his reign of terror.

The Nazis main philosophical pillars were anti-Semitism and the belief that some ethnicities are superior to others. Hitler used these two core beliefs to reach out to potential Fellow Travelers. Leaders like Josef Tiso and Miklos Horthy had great antipathy toward Jews. Hitler used this commonality to further their relationship. Mussolini and Ion Antonescu shared Hitler's belief in ethnic superiority. This core belief led to the strong alliances between Germany, Italy, and Romania. Even though Hitler's Axis partners were not technically Nazis, they shared certain core, crucial beliefs. Their goals were not always the same as Hitler's, but there was significant overlap. In many cases, fear and hatred of communism and the Soviet Union were also shared beliefs. Ultimately, Hitler needed more than just Nazis to take over Europe. He needed co-collaborators, co-conspirators, and Fellow Travelers.

A moral objector is a person who opposes the goals of the aggressor. During the 1930's and early 1940's this meant openly opposing anti-Semitism and the belief in a Master Race. Even if their country could have found benefit to aligning with Hitler, a moral objector simply would not agree to such an alliance. In some cases, like with Prince Paul of Yugoslavia, a leader could be a moral objector but still be forced into an alliance with the Nazis. In cases such as this, leaders threw obstacles into the Nazi military and political operations.

Some of the leaders, such as Enver Hoxha and Vaclav Havel, are included in this book for special reasons. Enver Hoxha came to power in Albania due to his successful guerilla war against the Nazis in 1944. Hoxha and his informal army drove the Nazis out of the country. Hoxha, however, unleashed forty-plus years of terror on his people. The Nazi invasion of Albania led directly to Hoxha's takeover which imprisoned and abused Albania's population until the early 1990's.

Czechoslovakia was taken over by the Soviet Union after World War II. This was, for the most part, a reaction to the terror of the Nazis. Stalin wanted a sphere of influence to protect his nation and to help expand its influence. Oppressive Soviet rule in Czechoslovakia lasted until the very last days of 1989. Vaclav Havel and his pro-Democratic partners in Czechoslovakia put an end to this Moscow-dominated rule. Havel had to fight the history of both communism and Nazism. When Havel spoke to the liberated people of Prague on New Years Eve 1990 the country was finally back to its rightful, pre-Nazi existence. The aftershocks of Hitler's regime choked both Albanian and Czechoslovak life for half a century.

These thirteen men were guided and mis-guided by their convictions and by the desires of their citizens. Some of these leaders were deeply anti-Semitic and others were highly ethical Humanists. This book gives readers an important view of the Holocaust and some of the men who helped and hindered Hitler.

Sex in Education【電子書籍】[ Edward H. Clarke ]

"Is there any thing better in a State than that both women and men be rendered the very best? There is not."ーPlato.
It is idle to say that what is right for man is wrong for woman. Pure reason, abstract right and wrong, have nothing to do with sex: they neither recognize nor know it. They teach that what is right or wrong for man is equally right and wrong for woman. Both sexes are bound by the same code of morals; both are amenable to the same divine law. Both have a right to do the best they can; or, to speak more justly, both should feel the duty, and have the opportunity, to do their best. Each must justify its existence by becoming a complete development of manhood and womanhood; and each should refuse whatever limits or dwarfs that development.

The problem of woman's sphere, to use the modern phrase, is not to be solved by applying to it abstract principles of right and wrong. Its solution must be obtained from physiology, not from ethics or metaphysics. The question must be submitted to Agassiz and Huxley, not to Kant or Calvin, to Church or Pope. Without denying the self-evident proposition, that whatever a woman can do, she has a right to do, the question at once arises, What can she do? And this includes the further question, What can she best do? A girl can hold a plough, and ply a needle, after a fashion. If she can do both better than a man, she ought to be both farmer and seamstress; but if, on the whole, her husband can hold best the plough, and she ply best the needle, they should divide the labor. He should be master of the plough, and she mistress of the loom. The qu?stio vexata of woman's sphere will be decided by her organization. This limits her power, and reveals her divinely-appointed tasks, just as man's organization limits his power, and reveals his work. In the development of the organization is to be found the way of strength and power for both sexes. Limitation or abortion of development leads both to weakness and failure.

Neither is there any such thing as inferiority or superiority in this matter. Man is not superior to woman, nor woman to man. The relation of the sexes is one of equality, not of better and worse, or of higher and lower. By this it is not intended to say that the sexes are the same. They are different, widely different from each other, and so different that each can do, in certain directions, what the other cannot; and in other directions, where both can do the same things, one sex, as a rule, can do them better than the other; and in still other matters they seem to be so nearly alike, that they can interchange labor without perceptible difference. All this is so well known, that it would be useless to refer to it, were it not that much of the discussion of the irrepressible woman-question, and many of the efforts for bettering her education and widening her sphere, seem to ignore any difference of the sexes; seem to treat her as if she were identical with man, and to be trained in precisely the same way; as if her organization, and consequently her function, were masculine, not feminine. There are those who write and act as if their object were to assimilate woman as much as possible to man, by dropping all that is distinctively feminine out of her, and putting into her as large an amount of masculineness as possible. These persons tacitly admit the error just alluded to, that woman is inferior to man, and strive to get rid of the inferiority by making her a man. There may be some subtle physiological basis for such viewsーsome strange quality of brain; for some who hold and advocate them are of those, who, having missed the symmetry and organic balance that harmonious development yields, have drifted into an hermaphroditic condition. One of this class, who was glad to have escaped the chains of matrimony, but knew the value and lamented the loss of maternity, wished she had been born a widow with two children. These misconceptions arise from mistaking difference of organization and function for difference of position in the scale of being, which is equivalent to saying that man is rated higher in the divine order because he has more muscle, and woman lower because she has more fat. The loftiest ideal of humanity, rejecting all comparisons of inferiority and superiority between the sexes, demands that each shall be perfect in its kind, and not be hindered in its best work. The lily is not inferior to the rose, nor the oak superior to the clover: yet the glory of the lily is one, and the glory of the oak is another; and the use of the oak is not the use of the clover. That is poor horticulture which would train them all alike.

The Great American Pie Company【電子書籍】[ Ellis Parker Butler ]

If you take a pie and cut it in two, the track of your knife will represent the course of Mud River through the town of Gloning, and that part of the pie to the left of your knife will be the East Side, while the part to the right will be the West Side. Away out on the edge of the pie, where the town fritters away into the fields and shanties on the East Side, dwells Mrs. Deacon, and a fatter, better-natured creature never trod the crust of the earth or made the crust of a pie. Being in reduced circumstances, owing to the inability of Mr. Deacon to appreciate the beneficial effects of work, Mrs. Deacon turned her famous baking ability to account, and in a small way began selling her excellent homemade pies to those who liked a superior article. In time Mrs. Deacon established a considerable trade among the people of Gloning, and Mr. Deacon was wrested from his customary seat on the back steps to make daily delivery trips with the Deacon home-made pies. Ephraim Deacon was a deep thinker and philosopher. He was above his environment, or at least he felt so, and while waiting for opportunity to approach and give his talents full vent he scorned labor. So he sat around a good deal, and jawed a good deal, and smoked. But if you will return to your plate of Gloning you will see on the pie, far over on the West Side, where the scallops lap over the edge of the plate, a little spot that is burned a bit too brown. This is the home of Mrs. Phineas Doolittle, as base and servile an imitator as ever infringed on another person's monopoly. For, seeing and hearing of the success of Mrs. Deacon's pies, Mrs. Doolittle put a few extra pieces of hickory in her stove, got out her rolling-pin, and became a competitor, even to making Mr. Doolittle deliver her pies. The Deacon pies had sold readily at ten cents; three for a quarter. The Doolittle pie entered the field at eight cents; three for twenty cents. Mrs. Deacon stood this as long as possible, and then she decided to stand it no longerーunless she had to. "Eph, you good-for-nothin' lazy animal," she remarked to her husband one morning, as she started him on his rounds, "if you was a man, I'd send you over to talk to that Doolittle woman; but you ain't, so it ain't no use sendin' you. But if you meet up with that lazy, good-for-nothin' husband of hers, you give him a piece o' my mind, an' let him know what I think o' them what comes stealin' away my business, an' breakin' down prices, which I don't wonder at, her pies not bein' in the same class as mine, as everybody knows. If you was any good, you'd mash his head in for him, just to show her what I think of them. But there! Like as not, if you do catch up with him, you two will sit an' gossip like two old grannies, which is all you are good for, either of you."

LANDLORD'S DAUGHTER AND TENANT'S SON. In a kitchen of moderate size, flagged with slate, humble in its appointments, yet looking scarcely that of a farmhouseーfor there were utensils about it indicating necessities more artificial than usually grow upon a farmーwith the corner of a white deal table between them, sat two young people evidently different in rank, and meeting upon no level of friendship. The young woman held in her hand a paper, which seemed the subject of their conversation. She was about four- or five-and-twenty, well grown and not ungraceful, with dark hair, dark hazel eyes, and rather large, handsome features, full of intelligence, but a little hard, and not a little regnantーas such features must be, except after prolonged influence of a heart potent in self-subjugation. As to her social expression, it was a mingling of the gentlewoman of education, and the farmer's daughter supreme over the household and its share in the labor of production. As to the young man, it would have required a deeper-seeing eye than falls to the lot of most observers, not to take him for a weaker nature than the young woman; and the deference he showed her as the superior, would have enhanced the difficulty of a true judgment. He was tall and thin, but plainly in fine health; had a good forehead, and a clear hazel eye, not overlarge or prominent, but full of light; a firm mouth, with a curious smile; a sun-burned complexion; and a habit when perplexed of pinching his upper lip between his finger and thumb, which at the present moment he was unconsciously indulging. He was the son of a small farmerーin what part of Scotland is of little consequenceーand his companion for the moment was the daughter of the laird. "I have glanced over the poem," said the lady, "and it seems to me quite up to the average of what you see in print." "Would that be reason for printing it, ma'am?" asked the man, with amused smile

Rainy Lake House Twilight of Empire on the Northern Frontier【電子書籍】[ Theodore Catton ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Rainy Lake House Twilight of Empire on the Northern Frontier【電子書籍】[ Theodore Catton ]

“Focuses on three men from vastly different backgrounds and serves as a vehicle for exploring the rigors of the fur trade . . . lyrical and transcendent.” ーAmerican Historical Review

In September 1823, three men met at Rainy Lake House, a Hudson’s Bay Company trading post near the Boundary Waters. Dr. John McLoughlin, the proprietor of Rainy Lake House, was in charge of the borderlands west of Lake Superior, where he was tasked with opposing the petty traders who operated out of US territory. Major Stephen H. Long, an officer in the US Army Topographical Engineers, was on an expedition to explore the wooded borderlands west of Lake Superior and the northern prairies from the upper Mississippi to the forty-ninth parallel. John Tanner, a white man living among the Ojibwa nation, arrived in search of his missing daughters, who, Tanner believed, were at risk of being raped by the white traders holding them captive at a nearby fort.

Drawing on their combined experiences, Theodore Catton creates a vivid depiction of the beautiful and dangerous northern frontier from a collision of vantage points: American, British, and Indigenous; imperial, capital, and labor; explorer, trader, and hunter. The Story of Norway【電子書籍】[ Hjalmar Hjorth Boyesen ]

The Norsemen are a Germanic race, and belong, accordingly, to the great Aryan family. Their next of kin are the Swedes and Danes. Their original home was Asia, and probably that part of Asia which the ancients called Bactria, near the sources of the rivers Oxus and Jaxartes. Not only the Norsemen are supposed to have come from this region, but the ancestors of all the Aryan nations which now inhabit the greater portion of the civilized world. Among the first to leave this cradle of nations were the tribes which settled upon the eastern islands and peninsulas of the Mediterranean, and, under the name of Hellenes, developed, long before the Christian era, an art and a literature which are, in some respects, yet unrivalled. The early Italic tribes, from which sprung in time the world-empire of Rome, trace their descent from the same ancestry; as do also the Kelts, who in ancient times inhabited England, Ireland, and France; the Slavs who settled in the present Russia, Bohemia, and the northern Turkish provinces; and the Germans, who occupied the great central regions of the European continent. Among Asiatic nations, the Iranians inhabiting Persia, and the Hindoos in India, have Aryan blood. It seems almost incredible that persons differing so widely in appearance, habits, and disposition, as, for instance, a Hindoo and an Englishman, should, if you go sufficiently far back, have the same ancestry. And yet there cannot be the slightest doubt that such is the case. The question, then, naturally arises: "If they were once alike, what can have made them so different?" And the answer is: "The climate, the soil, and the general character of the countries in which they settled." The country from which the first Aryans emigrated was mountainous, with fertile valleys, and an even, temperate climate. There was no excessive heat to make men drowsy and indolent, nor excessive cold to stunt them in their growth and paralyze their energies. The earth did not, as in the tropics, produce a luxurious vegetation which would support the inhabitants without labor, but it offered sustenance to herds of cattle which, with the proper care, would supply the simple needs of primitive men. The race, thus situated, progressed physically as well as mentally, until it became superior to all the tribes inhabiting the neighboring regions. War followed, in which the weaker succumbed. The Aryans, increasing rapidly in numbers, took possession of the conquered territories, enslaved the indigenous population, or drove it back into localities where the conditions of life were less favorable. It is not positively known when the first migration on a large scale took place; but some scholars have supposed that the Hindoos separated from the parent race as early as 1500 B.C. The dates of the Greek, Italic, Keltic, and Slavic migrations are likewise uncertain, and the period which has been fixed upon for the Aryan occupation of Germany is also conjectural. The same uncertainty prevails regarding the earliest history of the Scandinavian tribes; although there is a strong probability that their invasion of the countries which they now inhabit must have taken place during the second century preceding the Christian era. It is not unlikely that they left their Asiatic home simultaneously with the Germans, with whom they were then almost, if not entirely, identical, and that their conquering hordes spread northward, subduing the Finns and Lapps, whom they found in possession of the land, partly exterminating them, partly forcing them up into the barren mountains of the extreme North. Among the tribes whose path of conquest was turned in this direction, the Goths (Gauter), the Swedes (Svear), and the Danes (Daner) were the most prominent, though several other names are mentioned, both by native and foreign authors.

History of the Moorish Empire in Europe (Complete)【電子書籍】[ Samuel Parsons Scott ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】History of the Moorish Empire in Europe (Complete)【電子書籍】[ Samuel Parsons Scott ]

Few countries of the globe present to the eye of the traveller so desolate, so forbidding an aspect as that vast and arid peninsula which, embracing an area of more than a million square miles, stretches away through twenty-four degrees of latitude, from the confines of the Syrian Desert to the shores of the Indian Ocean. Its surface, while far from possessing the monotonous character with which popular fancy is accustomed to invest it, is, for the greater part of its extent, destitute of those physical advantages which tempt either the cupidity or the enterprise of man. Its coasts are low and unhealthy. Its harbors are few and unsafe. Its mineral resources are to this day unexplored and unknown. Its impenetrable deserts, guarded by a fierce and martial population, have always set at defiance the best-matured plans of invasion and conquest. In the principality of Yemen, appropriately named The Happy, the cultivation of the soil has flourished from time immemorial, but in almost every other province the returns of agricultural labor are discouraging and unremunerative. Illimitable wastes of sand, over which sweeps the deadly blast of the simoom; mountains, bald, craggy, and volcanic, whose slopes are destitute of every trace of vegetable life; plains strewn with blocks of tufa and basalt; valleys dotted here and there with stunted shrubs, or encrusted with a saline deposit similar to that upon the shores of the Dead Sea; a soil impregnated with nitre; such are, and have been from prehistoric times, the physical features of the Arabian Peninsula. No stream worthy of the name of river, dispensing wealth and fertility in its winding course to the sea, flows through this dreary and inhospitable land. Wherever a spring was found, a permanent settlement arose, and the black tents of the Bedouin gave place to huts of sun-dried bricks, while the dignity of the sheik, who now aspired to the title of prince, was satisfied with a dwelling superior to those of his subjects only in point of size. The oasis, generally suggestive of shady groves and purling streams, is often, in reality, nothing more than the dry bed of a mountain torrent, along whose borders a little withered vegetation furnishes the hardy camel with pasture, and where a scanty supply of brackish water can, by laborious digging, be obtained. Overhead glitters a sky of brass, unflecked by a single cloud, and, morning and evening, the rays of the sun, mellowed and refracted by the vapors of the earth, clothe every elevation with scarlet, azure, and violet tints which, blended in exquisite harmony, rival the splendors of the rainbow; developing, under the effects of radiation, optical illusions and charming pictures of the mirage, attributed by superstitious ignorance to the influence of enchantment. The unbroken stillness of the Desert, the wide expanse of uninhabited territory, produce a sense of mental depression, accompanied by an apprehension of danger from the convulsions of nature and the violence of man, which no experience seems able to remove; affecting even the sturdy camel-driver, familiar with these solitudes from childhood, who shudders as he urges his string of panting beasts over the drifted sand-heaps and through the mountain fastness, the reputed haunt of evil genii and the vantage ground from whence the murderous banditti oft beset the caravan. So deeply-rooted and tenacious is this feeling that the Arab regards a journey successfully performed as just cause for congratulation, and indeed not inferior to a triumph, as is indicated by his familiar proverb, “Travel is a victory.”

Coins, Riches, and Lands Paying for Military Manpower in Antiquity and Early Medieval Times【

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Coins, Riches, and Lands Paying for Military Manpower in Antiquity and Early Medieval Times【電子書籍】

A study of how coins, riches and lands were gained and distributed among the soldiers, warriors, and mercenaries in the Antiquity and Early Medieval times.

Land was the ideal store of wealth in the ancient Mediterranean world. It brought social respectability, and its possession allowed participation in the politics of the cities governed by landowning elites. Crucial defense of the interests of a given polity through armed services often involved the distribution of lands to laborers still not integrated in these societies. Mediterranean urban dynamics also involved paid labor and were always in need of short-contract manpower, including skilled soldiers and warriors. For short-time military services, lands were not always available so soldiers and warriors were paid with coins and riches.

Because of their superior development, urban economies in the Mediterranean were able to attract migrant paid labor. When returning home, the migrant warriors carried coins and riches that would enable them to maximize the return that a homecoming entailed. Although difficult to prove whether these men were paid in advance or when discharged, it is an important issue as it shows the strength of one contractor over another and helps to better understand the construction of statehood in ancient and early medieval times.

This collection of papers sheds light on how coins, riches, and lands were gained and distributed among soldiers, warriors, and mercenaries. Contributions cover a wide chronological span from Late Pharaonic to early medieval times, linking a well-defined core area, the Mediterranean basin, with its peripheries: Central Europe and Scandinavia to the north and the margins of the Sahara Desert and the Fertile Crescent to the south and the east.

Guyana: from Slavery to the Present Vol. 2 Major Diseases【電子書籍】[ Ramesh Gampat ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Guyana: from Slavery to the Present Vol. 2 Major Diseases【電子書籍】[ Ramesh Gampat ]

It is common knowledge that slavery and indenture were characterized by long hours of physical labor, restriction of movement and other basic human freedoms, and severe punishment for violations of draconian labor laws. Less well known is the fact that nutrition was very deficient and a range of infectious diseases maimed, debilitated and killed on a large scale.

In trying to narrow the knowledge gap with respect to Guyana, Ramesh Gampat shows that extremely poor sanitary conditions, awful hygiene and malnutrition hastened widespread infections and created a vicious cycle. The British protected its own soldiers, officials and colonists by establishing a medical enclave that lasted until Emancipation in 1838. Former slaves were then quarantined to neglected and decaying villages and Indians to plantations. Concern with health conditions appeared only during periods of epidemics and even then it was essentially for the protection of Europeans. Colonial medicine opened the way for stereotyping, labeling, racialization of disease, neutralization of potential leaders in the struggle for justice, and crystallization of the view that Europeans were superior to Blacks and Indians. Shorter stature and shorter life expectancy are good indications that slaves and indentured immigrants fared considerably less well than Europeans.

Several infectious diseases sickened and fell Blacks and Indians, including malaria and undefined fevers, pneumonia and bronchitis, diarrhea and enteritis, tuberculosis, pneumonia and hookworm. The conquest of malaria in the early 1950s accelerated the epidemiological transition from communicable to chronic noncommunicable diseases, and today NCDs account for some three-quarters of all deaths in Guyana. Malaria has reemerged, fueled by a gold boom that consumes huge amounts of mercury. The potentially adverse public health consequences of this relatively new dynamic, the combined trio, have been neglected.

Asia's Turning Point An Introduction to Asia's Dynamic Economies at the Dawn of the New Century【電子書籍】[ Ivan Tselichtchev ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Asia's Turning Point An Introduction to Asia's Dynamic Economies at the Dawn of the New Century【電子書籍】[ Ivan Tselichtchev ]

Asia was probably the biggest economic sensation of the post-war decades. The breathtaking success of Japan was followed by a remarkable rise of "four tigers", then ASEAN founder states and then China. The Asian miracle became a commonly accepted definition of this success. In the late 1970s and especially 80s it became clear that the balance of power in the world had changed. Politicians, businessmen, scholars began to talk about "the new Asia Pacific age" and Asian economic model, different from and, maybe, even superior to Western capitalism. However, in 1997-98 the Asian economic crisis came and made the region a sick man. Six years before that Japan, the regional powerhouse entered more than a decade-long period of stagnation. The miracle was over. However, the crisis was overcome within a surprisingly short period of time. Naturally, the question arises: What now? What is going on in the region after the miracle and after the crisis? What is today's face of Asian capitalism and how should we view its performance?

Readers interested in regional developments will find a lot of literature about miracle decades and crisis years. However, few analysts have addressed the challenging questions addressed in this book.

The authors vividly show that Asian capitalism is undergoing a radical structural transformation. These changes are directly affecting its key institutions: governments, companies, labor relations, etc. As a result Asian economic systems are becoming much closer to the Western-style, especially Anglo-Saxon capitalism, though the region retains some important specific features, especially regarding business culture.

This book is a must for business people worldwide, for all those who study the region in colleges and business schools, for people engaged in various international activities and, finally, for all those who want learn more about our world at the dawn of the new century.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Every Last Drop: A Dystopian Tale of the Future Labor Force【電子書籍】[ Mark Teran ]

THE METADATA OF THE MIND . . .

Intrusive digital surveillance and data collection by large organizations are a fact of daily life. Managers of firms and institutions also have a long history of intrusive and often demeaning ways of surveilling, or more importantly, controlling employees. What does the future hold given such current and historical trends for the millions of people who have little defense against them?

2091 A.D., Redding, California: in a post-war anarcho-capitalist formation called the United Enterprises of North America, a young, acquisitive male manager is an uncritical, big supporter of the ConcenTask system, which involves a neck implant that gathers data on every employees' presence of mind, intensity of effort, recovery from interruptions, daydreaming, etc., which then goes into a statistical profile similar to how detailed performance statistics in business, sports, and other fields are used today. Exact thoughts are not read for that would be "an invasion of privacy". The profile then becomes the employee's International Employment Valuation Network rating, similar to a credit rating. The young manager is inexplicably and suspiciously pursued both professionally and romantically by his younger female superior, a wunderkind of the enterprise world who may or may not be who she outwardly seems to be. A particular manufacture and preparation of their massive firm are "Enveration" kits concerning a new form of indentured servitude. The characters, including the secondary characters, are well-developed. A major theme of the story is how private institutions and individuals would fill the socioeconomic power vacuum left by the erosion of popular political participation and awareness as well as the evisceration of democratic government.

Rebel gives a rare insight on how it all began. Two teens recruited to fight a revolution that prompted Martial Law in the Philippines, fight to keep each other in the raging political and cultural transformation brought by the late 60’s. They were members of Kabataang Makabayan, a student organization founded at the University of the Philippines. What started as a small group took on the mission to teach all sectors that there is more to politics than voting on elections. It identified the ills of society, explained the roots and organized the struggle for a socialist alternative. It was a subversive idea today and more so in 1964. The KM members multiplied in UP Diliman Chapter. Some enrolled in other universities for the main purpose of building other chapters. Soon there was UEKM Chapter, FEUKM Chapter, etc. Some members were assigned to the labor sector, coordinating between unions and building new ones. The Kilusang Mayo Uno or (KMU) was born. Other members were assigned to the divided and disorganized transport sector. In a matter of time, jeepney strikes were demanding and winning fare hikes. Students who could have had a good life died or wasted their years in jail or in hiding. “Let every person be in subjection to the superior authorities, for there is no authority except by God; the existing authorities stand placed in their relative positions by God. Therefore, whoever opposes the authority has taken a stand against the arrangement of God; those who have taken a stand against it will bring judgment against themselves.” (Romans 13:1-2)

Human Resource Management in a Post COVID-19 World New Distribution of Power, Individualization, Digitalization and Demographic Developments【電子書籍】[ Hermann Troger ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Human Resource Management in a Post COVID-19 World New Distribution of Power, Individualization, Digitalization and Demographic Developments【電子書籍】[ Hermann Troger ]

This book presents a novel viewpoint in HR management: in addition to the macroeconomic factors (demographic development, industry 4.0, digitization, etc.) and its micro-political counterparts (shortage of skilled workers, an aging workforce, shortage of MINTs), personnel policy in the highly developed economic regions of the world can increasingly be seen from the third point of view, which is the ego-perspective. The complexity of the economic world 4.0 is manifesting itself for the employees in a working world of unlimited possibilities, offering almost limitless freedom of choice, especially for younger people. Due to this shift in the balance of power, the influence of the employers decreases and is often reduced to countering the pronounced self-confidence of the employees in asserting their expectations with corresponding company incentives.

The author emphasizes that dealing with the challenges of this extremely fragile world of work - currently exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic - must by no means be left solely in the hands of overburdened personnel managers. The contribution of the line manager or direct superior is becoming increasingly important. And it is only through close and clearly defined cooperation between the two that the opportunity for effective human resources management lies. This book aims to illustrate this process of division of labor in the individual phases of personnel management.

Paradise (to be) Regained【電子書籍】[ Henry David Thoreau ]

We learn that Mr. Etzler is a native of Germany, and originally published his book in Pennsylvania, ten or twelve years ago; and now a second English edition, from the original American one, is demanded by his readers across the water, owing, we suppose, to the recent spread of Fourier’s doctrines. It is one of the signs of the times. We confess that we have risen from reading this book with enlarged ideas, and grander conceptions of our duties in this world. It did expand us a little. It is worth attending to, if only that it entertains large questions. Consider what Mr. Etzler proposes: “Fellow Men! I promise to show the means of creating a paradise within ten years, where everything desirable for human life may be had by every man in superabundance, without labor, and without pay; where the whole face of nature shall be changed into the most beautiful forms, and man may live in the most magnificent palaces, in all imaginable refinements of luxury, and in the most delightful gardens; where he may accomplish, without labor, in one year, more than hitherto could be done in thousands of years; may level mountains, sink valleys, create lakes, drain lakes and swamps, and intersect the land everywhere with beautiful canals, and roads for transporting heavy loads of many thousand tons, and for travelling one thousand miles in twenty-four hours; may cover the ocean with floating islands movable in any desired direction with immense power and celerity, in perfect security, and with all comforts and luxuries, bearing gardens and palaces, with thousands of families, and provided with rivulets of sweet water; may explore the interior of the globe, and travel from pole to pole in a fortnight; provide himself with means, unheard of yet, for increasing his knowledge of the world, and so his intelligence; lead a life of continual happiness, of enjoyments yet unknown; free himself from almost all the evils that afflict mankind, except death, and even put death far beyond the common period of human life, and finally render it less afflicting. Mankind may thus live in and enjoy a new world, far superior to the present, and raise themselves far higher in the scale of being.”
